I can recommend this camera. Picked it up to keep an eye on my mother's place and it has been awesome. Clear picture and great tracking.
So far has picked up the cat that traverses her place nightly, Amazon deliveries, other visitors, and a naked guy having a stroll down the street that was arrested in front of the neighbours place. Though in the last case I saw a little too much

      How's the numberplate recognition?

      • im interested in this too.most cameras are not good for getting plates even during the day.

        • I can easily make out cars going up and down the driveway but I've placed the camera in a decently high position (on the second level of two storey house) and can easily see the number plates of cars coming in and out of the driveway (about 8 metres in length). It has auto tracking and two cameras, one with optical zoom. So one camera zooms in on the cars as they drive up and down the driveway and gives me a clear view of the licence plate.

I've set it to focus and record only things that happen on the property, but I jumped on the app just now to test it further and pointed the camera to a Telstra Van 2 houses down and across the street. Its a bit blurry but I can just make out enough to read the number plate
I also pointed it at the driveway on a house across the street and can make out the number plate of the car there

Turn off the phallus detection in (Setting > Privacy Mode) if the last case happen too often

I walked in front of the camera during installation and it didn't pick up anything so I assumed it was off.

  • When using the night vision are there visible red lights from the camera? Is so, are there any models that don’t have this?

    • +4

Out of interest, what’s the issue with that? I think it’s a good deterrent if some attention is drawn to the camera, if that’s the concern.

Unsure if you can avoid that or not on an IR camera, but to stop insects going near my Ubiquiti camera I disable the IR on the camera itself (thus disabling the red light) and in proximity of the camera have a seperate IR blaster, which does have a red glow, that draws insects away and is significantly stronger than the cameras blaster. That doesn’t look like a camera either as it’s a large rectangular grid. Unsure if that helps.

      • Where can one purchase this large rectangular IR blaster grid from pls?

      • Use case is essentially a baby monitor. Cool idea using a seperate blaster. I don’t actually have a need, but am always interested when I see a cam post to know if the IR lights are visible.

        • Ahh yeah. We use a Ubiquiti for a baby monitor also and just live with the red glow, which I only notice if looking for it in our particular camera (G3 Flex). Had used an Arlo baby camera before that but it just wasn’t anywhere near as quick to connect over wifi compared to our PoE camera.

infrared range is from 800 - 1000nm above 900nm in invisible to us but below that we see red glow. most home ip cameras uses 850nm which produces the red glow. I dont know any model which uses 940nm LED but the do have 940nm seperate IR illuminator. Amazon 940nm IR illuminator.

    • Sorry, I haven't noticed but I haven't checked for it either.
Since I haven't noticed it I'm assuming its' not too obvious at the very least.

  • Which is better Eufy or Reolink? Still undecided…

    • +1

Are you aware of eufy cyber security issues end of 2022?

      • -2

Base on Linus tech tips? There is security youtuber that debunk this.

        • It was a real issue. Eufy has since made some changes to their cloud services and camera firmware to address the issues.

However, I'd be more concerned about the privacy claims that Eufy made in their advertising, how false or misleading they turned out to be, and the extent to which they attempted to dismiss and obfuscate the issues when they were raised. The corporate attitude is the bit that worries me most.

To address the original question: it's mostly an issue of camera type. Almost all of Reolink's cameras are hard-wired PoE devices. Eufy's cameras are battery powered and rely on wireless networking.

Every security expert will tell you that hard-wired cameras are preferable from a security and reliability standpoint, but are more difficult / costly to install because you need to run the cables.

    • Look, it depends on your use case & how ‘tech savvy’ you are. But Reolink every day of the week.

All offline storage always with cheap really good cameras. These auto-tracking cameras are great. Huge, but great.

  • If only these were homekit

    • Home Assistant can pass it to homekit

        Or checkout Scrypted (or both!)

        • Thanks, somethings to play with this weekend. Camera > HA > Homekit/Alexa have a bit of lags

  • Anyone know if the settings such as Person detection work with a Dahua NVR sensing or does it have to be brand matching for it to work?

Looking to do a DIY in the garage where there is existing unused cabling.

    • +1

Car and person detection is built into the camera itself, and works even if you don't have an NVR (FTP or local SD card storage).

However, I have no idea if the Dahua NVR will know how to work with that.

  • Hey @julancer, how does this compare to the Trackmix camera? Is it just the 2nd lens & ultra wide shot/view that the 830a is missing? Or are there other differences as well? Any upgrades on this over the trackmix?

    • I have been advised Yes, Trackmix has Dual Lens, Dual View, Dual Tracking compared to the 830a. Trackmix could be considered an upgrade to the 830a. But the RLC-830A offers three night vision modes.

    I`m getting $148 +GST = $164.
What am I doing wrong ?

    • Im getting $166 delivered?

Edit: If you select buy now instead of add to cart, in the checkout page it will offer an enter coupon option. My final price was $155 delivered

      • Tried buy now and add to cart, I couldn't use the code in either purchase method.

  • @julancer, which NVR model would you recommend for this camera? Any deals on this NVR?

    • I've been advised that their NVRs have 8 channels. 16 channels, 36 channels depending on your needs. No deals that I know of, sorry.

  • @julancer could we get a code for the wifi version? Thanks much!

    • Yes a wifi link would be great! Please

    • WiFi would be great if we can get that too. I'm looking to get started with reolink cameras

    • I've been advised there isn't one, sorry.
