Denon make some good receivers but I'd much rather have a 5.2.1 setup.

This is a pretty good entry-level 5.1 model, but need to go up a few models to get 9+ channel processing & Atmos support.

Also assume you mean 5.1.2 setup for 2 Atmos channels?

  • Are all inputs HDMI 2.1?

    • +1

Only 3 of the inputs are 2.1

This is common though. Only the top of the line receivers have full HDMI 2.1 inputs. The bandwidth is not easy to account for.

Also keep in mind that not all 2.1 receivers are the same. Many limit the bandwidth pipeline. That shouldn't matter for this receiver, but if you're trying to push 4k/120 or 8k and also trying to push ultra high res audio (atmos or DTS:X), then it will struggle and you'll probably get audio drop outs.

But as I said, shouldn't matter here because this receiver doesn't support ultra high res audio.

      • I'll get a decent receiver one day. Still using an old AVR-X2400H. It's good, but only HDMI 2.0. It also has 8 HDMI inputs, it's a shame all the new ones only have 6

Honestly, this is a good receiver if you're not driving anything too crazy. As long as your speakers are 6 ohms or over, and you don't want to blast them at deafening levels, and you don't need the extra stuff (Atmos, 7.1, etc), then this will be a decent unit.

S660H and X580BT are they the same?

Was one of the only HDMI 2.1 av receiver from back in 2021, still going strong 2yrs on for me, have LG BX and CS(pc monitor), xbox sx, ps5 attached to it all working great at 4k120. I use it as a 2.1 system, had it set up 5.1 for a few weeks but I much prefer 2.1 as I mainly use it as a PC.

    Great av receiver imho.

Even after Yamaha recalled the hardware and replaced it their 2021 models still can't do proper 2.1

Gone back to my old Denon Avr-590 for now - my Yamaha has died due to the dumbass TI dts chip. Wont know the longevity of these modern chips until after warranty. A bit pissed at Yamaha ( and Pioneer and Onkyo) for using a shit chipset . I expect more than 5 yrs from a receiver.

    • I think most people would , so glad I'm not caught up in this anymore . Still have Aaron loudspeakers and centre that collect dust , I guess life and family is a different path now !

Good deal, but maybe worth a look at Home Audio Saleson ebay.

They do open box but otherwise new equipment. I picked up a AVR-X1800H for about $750 after making an offer and an eBay discount code. Obviously no guarantees you'll see the stock that you want given it's open box, but if you're in no hurry…

  • I have the 760h and I have so many issues with HDMI CEC and my C1. I think it’s more related to HDMI CEC being so shite.

    • Yeah I never get along with CEC.

Devices turning on when I don't want them to, switching to the wrong input when I turn the AVR on, etc

So over a decade ago I bought a cheapish (~$600) Pioneer 5.1 system but had the receiver die on me which I still haven't replaced. Would it be totally overkill to invest in something like this? I was thinking of just getting something second hand for around half this price, but I absolutely must have CEC and probably HDMI2.1. Does a better quality receiver produce better sound at all? Or are you just paying for the bells and whistles.

    • I'm in the same boat here! I would love to change the volume on my receiver with the TV remote, but I'm not sure I would pay $600 to do it. Plus my 10yo Yamaha is just rock solid…. :/

I don’t think this is overkill if you want HDMI 2.1. In fact it seems very affordable for a 2.1 receiver given prices I saw when looking a few months back. Also yet to really see any send hand ones come through GumTree in the ACT…had a watch out to try nab one for cheap if they do but generally I’m seeing much older models, often from people citing their upgrading, presumably to a HDMI 2.1 receiver.

I can’t say if you’ll get bang for your buck upgrading to something more expensive but.

    • Is this a Pioneer 5.1 "home theatre in a box"?

If you've got good speakers I'd say this deal is a solid upgrade for 2.1 HDMI.

If you've got some relatively average speakers I'd probably spend the money there first. If you do need better speakers I'd absolutely look at secondhand options. SteroNet classifieds might be a good place to start.

Otherwise if you didn't care about the bells and whistles I wouldn't bother. You might see a small improvement with this receiver from better room calibration, or if you needed extra grunt for your speakers (noting decent speakers are generally easy to drive). I can't imagine by itself it would sound $600 better if you already have something from Pioneer that's okay.

Obviously take this with a grain of salt. Audio is always weird to judge what's "value" in terms of improvement to listening experience :)

  • Shame it doesn't have DAB
