$600 off RRP Raynes
Yeah I see that - it just seems ludicrously expensive
Haha true. Cheaper than buying a new car but with all the cool CarPlay stuff. Win?
@miasommers: I'd rather a good Kenwood that does the same job with ACP/AA for half this Sony "bargain" price.
@PinzVidz: What would u recommend?
@miasommers: Depends on what car you're fitting it to. I like the Kenwoods as they're pretty bulletproof, have OEM steering wheel control compatibility and also offer various sizes besides standard ISO for Toyota and the likes. But for a standard double DIN ISO, a DMX7522S would do the trick nicely and can be picked up for under $600.
@PinzVidz: By your logic you can just buy an Aliexpress screen for Carplay/AA for $100 since it does the "same job".
@plmko: I'd prefer a good quality name brand unit than an elcheapo Chinese no name. Unless you're fitting it to a Great Wall or some other worthless shitbox?
@PinzVidz: Except the GUI of a Kenwood/JVC is like a calculator.
hard to justify this when there are other sony alternatives (3200/5500) that do the same thing really
@tarxan: Honestly, If you cant see the point in higher end audio gear then this isnt targetted at you. Theres a reason that different products exist to target different price points, not everyone has the same priorities when making purchases. It is the reason something like Mercedes can exist in the same world as Great Wall.
You will find that the more expensive head units have nice features such as higher res capacitive touch screens instead of cheap resistive which are not as responsive. In the case of this sony, it has much higher end ESS DAC and also better EQ for tuning your system (I have a 9500es, I think the same applies to this model). None of this will matter to someone just looking to upgrade the factory head unit while keeping their speakers, but will be a big advantage to people looking to replace the entire system.
Prior to getting the XAV-9500ES i was using an Audison Bit One hooked up to my factory head unit which was a pain in the ass if i wanted to change any settings as I had to hook my laptop up to change anything beyond balance/fader or sub level. Now I have a modern head unit with wireless android auto and I can easilly make audio adjustments from the headunit itself.
If you are not looking for the improved sound quality or tuning that these headunits provide, there are plenty of far cheaper options out there such as the awesome Kenwood units that PinzVidz mentioned above. Just dont act like there is no difference between this Sony unit and cheaper units.
Edit: Hang on a sec, after my little rant, Im just realising now that theyre saying this has a $2k rrp, I call bullshit, thats more than what I paid for my 9500es
@miasommers, do you have a source for RRP of $1999? So far I can only see it being sold at $1399
Aliexpress ones will do it cheaper and better ;)
Which one? Any suggestions?
The most decent ones i've seen are from Eonon, Teyes or Idoing
Cheaper for sure…better? Come on now…
Ive had 3 with 3 different cars and theyve all been great. As long as you stay away from the sub $200 ones its fine
I don't doubt that they are great headunits, even more so when you take value in to account, i just doubt that they are better than the Sony ES range as far as sound quality goes. Ihaven't actually used any of the Chinese headunits though, so i could be wrong, ive bought a few Chinese made audio products over the years (oppo, hidizs, mifo) and they have been great
Um yeah not cheap delet dis
Sony sold them for $799 USD so that RRP is bogus
799 USD = 1260 AUD plus taxes so realistically a 1400 AUD RRP it should be with a sale price of 1000 AUD
My issue with Sony head units is that for the price I expect something special in terms of software but it’s always basic and heavily reliant on CarPlay/ android auto.
For the money the equaliser and customisation should be next level.
In my opinion the late 90s early 2000s were the glory days for stereo head units.
plus the fact it's quite difficult to upgrade head units in 'modern' cars, the market is barely existent. Hard to justify pumping money into head units when the sales are low.
I think you haven't heard of their RSX-GS9
I have but unless your dropping another 10-15k on amps and speakers and only running Flac audio files it a waist.
I’m more implying my disappointment with there main stream products.
The daughter just bought a Aerpro AM9XFW 9” floating head unit for around 600ish and that’s not a bad unit for the money - operating system seems smooth and has wireless CarPlay
I'd have a look at the ATOTO S8 - full Android and decent amount of memory / storage and OLED screen on top of the range. Around $100 for converters dependent on car.
Plenty of YouTube reviews and videos of installs.
Price?
ATOTO S8 Ultra Double Din Car Stereo, 7 Inch Android in-Dash Navigation, Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto, Dual BT w/aptX HD, Gesture Operation, VSV&LRV, Built-in 4G Cellular Modem,4G+64G, S8G2A78UL-A https://amzn.asia/d/a8Dze8X
Is there something I'm missing here? Why is this a bargain
