The Sony link is for Mark II
My bad!
Mark I vs Mark II
Yep different lens.
seems like a good full frame lens I have the cannon equvilant of this. which costs about the same. I know sony has good image processors but what are the lens like?
Sony lenses are good and Sony even lets users use third party lenses!
This Sony lens don't have IS. AFAIK Canon RF lens usually have image stabilisation (exception is the huge 28-70 F2 and the cheapest primes) whereas most Sony G and GM ones rely on camera BIS. That may explains why Sony lens can be made smaller and lighter.
Some do, there's Optical SteadyShot™ (OSS) feature and In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS).
Here's a list of them, not sure how comprehensive it is though.

id love to cop a really nice lens like this one day but not too sure what else id need. I've got a tamron 28-200 which has a great range but want another lens sometime. Any advice?
35mm GM lens to go with your 28-200
Maybe a Sony 20mm G lens instead for wide angles?? Or a 17-28 f/2.8 from Tamron??
not everyone's a big fan of ultra wide.. i've never used anything less than 24mm and never felt the need to.
@dukeGR4: Yeah that’s true. But msrulz4 already had 28-200 already covered so I thought getting wides would be more useful than a Sony 200-600mm zoom.
@ankor: recently i discovered you could do loads of things with telephoto zooms. been watching reviews of landscape photographers using it to capture mountains.. and could use it for sports as well.
perhaps 28-200 + 200-600 could be a very good combo. 28 is plenty wide imo, read that during the film days that was the widest and longset focal length cameras came with before 35 and 50mm took over.
My advice is really have a think about the sort of photos you take, and would like to take. Buying a lens for a great price that doesn't suit your style can be a painfully expensive mistake. Speaking from my experience, with a 70-200 f4 that i just never touch. With your midrange pretty much covered there I would be trying it out on a wide range of shots, then making a note of its limitations (probably both speed and focal range).. then go from there
This is good advice.
As much as I loved shooting with my 70-200mm lens when I did use it, it was in reality more situational than I anticipated for the types of things I shoot.
Sigma 16-28 f2.8 if you need wider lens. Or Sony 35/85 f1.8 if you need better separation/low light performance.
What do you shoot? Is weight important? What is your budget? Zoom or primes? Do you use filters?
Tamron shared the same size filter thread on many of their lens and also have some nice FE mount zooms at lower than first party prices.
If you are looking for a fast general zoom lens and do not require the sharpness or tough build of the Sony then their lighter and cheaper lens range may do the job.
I have moved from fast zooms to primes due to the packing space saved when travelling ie 50mm and 85mm versus 70-200mm but everyone is different.
Was looking for better low light performance but, i mainly shoot travel photography. I kind of a want a lens for portraits which is why i was thinking of a prime but unsure of which one to get. Budget wise, max 2k but preferably around 1k
Sigma 56mm for apsc is highly recommended for portraits. Probably a bit short for full frame though.
The 28-200 is a great travel lens, not that I have one. The focal range and IQ is meant to be really good.
I recently got the 35-150mm for a similar price to this deal. I haven't travelled with it yet but the IQ and speed are good. It is heavy though.
yeah this was a lens, ive always wanted to replace my current 28-200. Let me know how you like it when you shoot! It looks amazing from what ive seen
It weighs over a kilo… It is fantastic and fits on my tiny travel tripod without tipping over.
I'll eventually upload some photos to r/sonyalpha. There's already a bunch of photos on there from this lens.
I have owned the 28-200, Tamron 35-150 and 24-70 GM II.
The 35-150 is a step up in IQ from the 28-200. Similarly the 24-70 is another step up in IQ over the 35-150 particularly on a 61mp sensor. There is always a trade off in quality as the zoom range increases. The IQ on the 24-70 is very close to prime lens quality - it is that good.
I use my 28-200 for travel but it has a lot more chromatic aberrations than the other two lenses which is my main gripe. I sold the 35-150 and use the 24-70 when quality is paramount.
I think the Tamron is a great alternative for half the price: https://www.cccwarehouse.com.au/xcart/pc/nviewPrd.asp?idProd…
With my pro days well behind me, I bought the Tamron instead. Fabulous lens and well worth the money.
i have been using canon and also fujifilm in the past, and i feel like any lens that is equivalent to 24-70 and shoot at 2.8, always looks very soft and not sharp enough, while i keep listening people on how good is 24-70
am i wrong or my lens have been defective?
I have the MK1 version of this and it is very sharp.
Exactly what lens and camera combination are you using?
may i know if it is sharp at 2.8 ?
i used to use canon 6d with 24-70 canon ef lens
also, fujifilm xt3, xt4, with 16-55 equivalent to 24-70
and i feel like i always have a soft image on the subject (when i shoot 2.8), altough background is nicely blur bokeh at 2.8
may i know if it is sharp at 2.8 ?
Yes. Even with a 60MP full frame sensor.
24-70 canon ef lens
That is not a lens model. By your own account it is an 'old' lens. Not all lens are made equally - as stated below, you get what you pay for.
For what it's worth, my Fuji 16-55 copy is beautifully sharp at 2.8, and it is widely regarded as an exceptional lens wide open. Sounds like you're either missing focus or in need of a service
24-70 f/2.8 has always been the rock standard go to event lens for a lot of photographers.
I've used Canon, Nikon and Sony versions and they've all been fantastic.
You get what you pay for. Would always be my first choice if someone wants a top of the line zoom lens and has the budget for it.
may i know if it is sharp at 2.8 ?
i used to own old canon 24-70 EF lens and i feel it is is soft on 24-70
Yes, 100% sharp at 2.8.
@Powershopz: thanks for sharing
Christ dude, google it. There’s so many reviews on this lens that will give you more data (and actual samples)
The 24-70 GM II is crazy sharp on my A7RV (61 megapixel camera) and approaches the quality of my GM prime lenses.

yup got it cheers mate
Happy to help
I recently went overseas and had to make the tough decision between this lens and the sony 20-70mm F4. After much contemplation, i ended up going with the 20-70mm for a few of reasons:
- Lighter (488g vs 695g)
- Smaller (99mm vs 120mm)
- Shooting during the day doesnt really require more than F4 (i also carry a F1.4 prime for night shooting)
- Very similar sharpness, but half the priceI prioritised accessibility, and wanted to make it as easy as possible to use of camera over my phone. For me, bulkier and heavier equipment in the past has added a layer of resistance.
Really happy with my choice and i hope this helps others.Decent price, I was underwhelmed with this GM II and went back to primes. Feel like the YouTubers overhyped this lens.
Sony have cancelled my first order of my price matched items around $8k worth of stuff with that 10% code on a new account but won’t divulge why lol… I’ll stick to Digidirect eBay sales.
The reps on the phone are interesting.. me “can you tell me why it was cancelled” Sony Rep “I don’t know sir”.
Maybe you got a bad copy? Mine has lived up to my high expectations. Bummer about your cancelled order - that is poor form by Sony.
What camera should I buy for sports photography on a low to mid budget? E6700? A7III?
Sports photography usually involves cameras with stacked BSI sensors paired with long and fast lenses, this combination is never budget friendly.
You can definitely shoot sports using any camera and lenses, but they are not specialised for sports, just general purpose equipment.
buy used if you don't have the budget for it. there's always newer tech around the corner.
That's a great price for the mark 2, missed the deal, I'm sure more deals will come pre-Christmas to tempt me again.
Would have been an easy decision to upgrade from 24-105/f4, but I have been using exclusively primes in recent month and really likes the performance and portability of them. In particular 24 and 50 focal lengths.
Request a price match! Still works
How do you get the 10% voucher?

This is NOT expired
Talk to the live chat after submitting a price match request for the 13/10/2023 for $2294 and they will adjust your basket.
I got the 24-70gmii for $2060 and the 70-200gmii for $2750Want to buy this lens at discounted price, but vouchers can no longer be used with price matches now
Yep I noticed that too, once you use the code they even restrict the use of future codes once you have used the code.
Good find. Could've got a few more dollars off ($2249-10% delivered) if you had chatted to Sony to pricematch CameraPro who I think is a Sony dealer.
Once the chat agent adds the item to the cart with the matched price, you should be able to apply to 10%
