Ferrex Pro 370mm 2 x 20V Lawn Mower 4.0Ah Kit $249 @ ALDI

290

Aldi 2x20v 370mm mower up for grabs from the 21st. How does this compare to bunnings brands?

I saw previous posts saying bunnings often matches to their equivalent ozito, is that through price match or they just go on sale?

I have both Ryobi and Ozito tools so I was looking at either of these. I don't want to spend over $400 total and the reason I was considering this is the 2x20v system suggests a 40v mower? so more power than the ozito or ryobi 18v ones?

    Good deal for Will

  • The prior petrol mower I had from Aldi was very average quality, didn't last much longer than the warranty.

Checking marketplace nearby, seems to be quite a few being sold for $50.

Perhaps being electric they will be better.

    • I bought a petrol one for $140 from ALDI and its still going strong. Was supposed to be something to get me through one summer while I save up but it just wont die.

      • Yeah I stumbled on a Ferrex petrol mower at Aldi about 2 years ago for $199 and it's been the best mower I've ever owned. Never an issue and a ton of power.

I stumbled on a Ferrex petrol mower

          Hope you're ok.

I saw previous posts saying bunnings often matches to their equivalent ozito, is that through price match or they just go on sale?

Often they just drop the price rather than "go on sale".

I think it really comes down to what Eco System you want to be a part of. For me, I am all Ozito for my tools so that is what I stick to.

    • The equivalent would be https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-36v-2-x-18v-370mm-cord…

Do they just quietly drop the price in stores or do they update their website/sale sign? or will i have to go in and argue a point?

      • +1

Do they just quietly drop the price in stores or do they update their website/sale sign?

I think they often drop it quietly, but it generally gets posted on OzBargain.

or will i have to go in and argue a point?

It isn't a like for like, so trying to price match isn't going to be easy….. that's the way I see it at least.

      • I think the equivalent should be this one because it's brushless like the Aldi https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-36v-2-x-18v-brushless-…

But in previous years Bunnings lowered the price on the brushed version you linked. So you could be right

        • hi @tomclancy could you please clarify where you found information indicating that Aldi's lawnmower is a brushless model? I've searched extensively, but I haven't been able to locate any such details. It would be immensely helpful if you could point me in the right direction or provide more context regarding the source of this information. Thank you!

          • +1

@OldRusty: No problems. It's in the Product Description on the Aldi website —>

            High performance brushless motor

Click the main deal link, then open up the sub menu "Product Description". A bit tricky to find

  • I've got 3 Ferrex tools, and they're top quality. I'm not sure about electric mowers tho, they generally don't rate. Range anxiety, and depending on how high your grass is - "they just don't cut it!"

    • +3

Nothing Ferrex is “top quality” their support is non-existent they aren’t even prosumer let alone commercial.

      • You won't need support, their tools are so good. If you're not happy with it take it back to aldi.

    • +4

I have quite a few ferrex tools too and never had an issue, love em, especially the 2x20V electric 5-in-1 tool (that I use mostly as a whipper-snipper). Thing has a LOT of power and just cuts the time in half compared to my old Ozito 2x18V whipper snipper.

      • Oh there was an electric version? I have the petrol 6-in-1 tool, agree it's great though.

    • how do you have range anxiety on a mower?

Swap the batteries out or just have a short break before you finish?

      • +1

I think you answered your own question.

    • As other people have bought up, have you needed support? I am worried about needing to replace a blade

  • +1

Off topic but I wish Ozito would make something like this. https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-21-…

      • That looks great. Just need something for the wife so she stops nagging me to get the chainsaw out for small-ish stuff.

        • +1

You probably already know this but the recip saw works great as a stopgap.

          • @m9: It appears that is not brushless. It's $169 for the brushless one. Or you could have bought the Ferrex brushless one for only $49. I've got it and it works great.

        • The ozito pruning saw is a great tool, if you are not aware of it. Perfect for cutting small branches. I was lucky to buy it cheap years ago.

        • +5

I think murdering your wife might be taking it too far

I bought this 2x20V mower last year after the sale with some stores doing a clearance sale for $150, the 5-in1 for $100, and the blower for $30.

Mower including 2 x 4Ah batteries are great, plenty of power, and lightweight.

5-in1 is great for $100, not sure about $200, although I usually only use the line trimmer, and the hedge trimmer is only able to be used on the pole so a little hard to use.

Blower is also great. Only uses 1 battery though so it burns through the battery pretty quickly on max power. Though you have 2 batteries included in the mower kit so you can get a lot done if you need to.

    • Do you know if its 40v or 20v motor?

What kind of grass do you have? I am getting zoysia installed so its more dense than couch.

Do you have a comparison of the power of this mower vs a 18v system?

      • I have sir Grange zoysia and a dewalt 36v. Around 80m2. It struggles to keep it at the ideeal 25mm in summer as it's so dense and the leaf is very tough.

      • +2

It has a unique 20V modular system that allows you to combine the same battery to multiply voltage to 40V (similar to the 36V (2x18V) Ozito). Coupled with 21700 batteries I think it’s a great buy.

I don’t have a comparison. All I know is even the thick stuff at mine and friends who have one doesn’t bog it down. Although I’ve never tried cutting wet grass, so that might be different.

Aldi have a 30 day return for whatever reason if you want a comparison however I doubt you’ll find anything else as good as this around this price.

  • This mower is like 14 inch cutting width, any regular mower is at least 18” but preferably 21+

    • +4

Everyone has different needs. My old place was over 5 levels of varying slope lawn, and lugging an 18” mower up and down was a nightmare, but these light mowers made the job much easier, even if it did mean doing an extra 4 passes to make up for the narrower cut.
If I had a footy field of flat lawn, a wider mower would be preferred.

    • Small townhouse and yard, the smaller the better.

  • I've not seen or used this but it's extremely small at 37cm. Not sure how this combination works as it's got a decent amount of volt/amps but then you would also spend a large amount of time mowing as it's so damn small.

  • +2

good price, let's wait for Bunning's comparable products

  • +1

I know this is an Aldi “Special buy” but isn’t it just selling at RRP?

I guess my question is ‘where is the bargain?’

Generally I could just find this item, at this price, in the Aldi catalogue.

Now, in a few weeks time, if they have any of these left on the shelf, and they knock $50 of on clearance, then it’s a bargain..

    • +6

Technically, every Aldi special buy is a "sale" because they don't permanently stock the items. Whether they are a "deal" depends upon how the price compares to similar products. The fact that Aldi is one of the only competitors that force Bunnings to temporarily drop their prices is evidence that their power tools are worth posting on Ozbargain when they are offerred.

    • +1

Every time you compare Aldi special buys to other places with similar suppliers, Aldi is cheaper during their sale so it does qualify as a bargain.

    • Yeah? Go buy one right now… you can't. It is a limited item that is a competitive price, it is a bargain compared to competitors that you could go and buy right now.

  • +1

Anyone used the mini chain saw

  • I ordered the ozito lawn mower another day but yet to pick up. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/804323

Wonder should I get the Aldi one instead.

    • 46cm steel deck vs 37cm fiber deck hence the price difference. This is more like - https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-36v-2-x-18v-370mm-cord…

If you have a smallish lawn, aldi one would be good.

      • I think my lawn around 350m², so better stay with the Ozito one you think?

        • I am no lawn expert, so not really the right person to answer it. But that ozito you got is solid, has 3 years battery warranty vs 1 year on aldi and has very powerful motor, larger blades means less passes. Video reviews of it are also good. Quality wise, I would say Ozito is great. Between the 2, it totally depends on your budget and your decision.

        • Don't pick it up yet, wait to see what Bunnings' response to the Aldi sale is first.

          • @BargainMe: How fast do they normally respond? aldi is next saturday so after that?

            • @Papag: Aldi had exterior paint last Saturday, Bunnings' had already beaten their price by 10c a few days prior when I looked, it has since gone back to regular price.

  • I brought this two years ago and the yard was 450m2 couch lawn. Still going strong and hasnt missed a beat. Mine was the 40v motor 2x20v. I will still have about 40% left in the batteries after a mow. Then switch them into the line trimmer and blower. Mother has just brought last 5-1 and blower deal and will be getting this one.

    • Is it actually a 40v system? or is it 2x20v. 2x20v will load the batteries more

  • +1

Aldi sold another battery mower which had a steel deck and went for $399, i wondering if they will be selling that one again? I purchased this mower last time and its pretty good. Its a good idea to buy a second set of batteries and the twin charger. Not a big deal if you get the 5 in 1 tool, which has an awesome hedge trimmer tool.

  • The add says includes batteries in description but then batteries sold seperately is in the picture, i assume they are included?

  • Bunnings now have the Ozito PXC 36V (2 x 18V) 370mm Cordless Telescopic Lawn Mower Kit PXLMTK-4182 for $248 was $349

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-36v-2-x-18v-370mm-cord…

    • But its the brushed one :( I wonder if the difference in efficiency will be noticeable

  • I just did some research online and looks like the Aldi mower comes with a single charger. I was 50/50 with the Ozito brushed [Bunnings price match] but now this might tip me in favour of the Ozito

    • +1

You def need the double charger - best to buy another 2x set of batteries and double charger if you have a large lawn area. Still the $399 ozito is probably better if you are on that eco system.

    • +1

Is it that big of a deal to swap over your batteries? You won't need to mow that often that you can't swap them over. For me it's still the brushed vs brushless debate

      • Well probably not, but it's a few other things all adding up for me:
        - Aldi is brushless and I put that as #1 priority when comparing the two
        - but I'll be storing in outdoor cupboard so Ozito telescopic handle is better than double-folding the Aldi one
        - also Aldi single charger means I need to charge batteries twice between mows. Would hate to discover that my 300sqm of lawn needs two charges to get through it and have only a single charger
        - I'm already in Ozito PXC ecosystem so I guess would be better to stay there (?). Probably not though, so this not a huge deal for me.
        - Ozito has no stock anywhere nearby me so I couldn't buy it even if I wanted

Aaaarghhh…. it's all too hard. I'll probably stick with old petrol for another year and wait for a different deal

        • +1
          • I agree, brushless is superior.

          • I have a small yard but live in a townhouse so the smaller the better for me too. However, a double fold handle seems entirely serviceable for compact storage

          • I have a relatively small yard so I won't need 2 charges for a mow, so this doesn't really apply to me.

          • I am already in ozito and Ryobi, so what's the harm of a third hahaha. Also I can just get an ozito adapted and then it doesn't matter.

          • Choice is worse for me, I can go and get the ozito today :( and I only have one day left to decide.

          • @Papag: Let us know which you decide! If it helps I think you should get the Aldi. Their 60 day change of mind returns are super easy and you'll know by then if it was the right decision for you 👍

            • +1

@tomclancy: But if I make the wrong choice now, then I will pay hahaha. I don't have a mower, turf being laid Monday next week.

            • +2

@tomclancy: I decided on the aldi. Set it up and tested today and am happy!

  • Is the handle on this mower telescopic or can it fold down for storage?

    • Not telescopic.

  • +4

For what its worth, I ended up buying this over the ozito

  • This is a small mower. Just remember it will take more passes to do your yard, unless it's quite small.

  • +2

Bought one on Sat, first in line. Three in the floor sold within 3 minutes, with five out the back (chatted with store team member). Cuts Kikuyu grass great, and gave extra power automatically in one harder spot. Front and backyards done on normal suburban block with 60% left on the batteries. 37 cm cut, I really didn't notice being smaller than my older 40+cm petrol as it's so easy to push, as well as manoeuvring around trees and edges. Brushless new tech, most efficient which is high priority for battery powered, my main reason for going with ALDI (was planning to go to Bunnings to get the $429 Ozito brushless model which is the only like for like spec - but than you ALDI!).

Ty OP. Ended up choosing this one over the Ozito one. I checked stock on the Ozito pretty soon after that deal was posted but there was basically nil all in WA so couldn't be bothered trying to ring up/chase stock. Your comments were also very helpful re 21700 batteries and brushless which the Ozito lacks. Overall, very impressed with the mower and performance, would definitely buy again. My review below:

Cons (these are all really minor)
    - Only 1 charger :(
    - Mechanism to fold handle is slightly fiddly (talking an extra 5 secs at this step)
    - Range anxiety! Can't match petrol but still very decent. Did something like 45+ mins draining about 80pc after charging up from new. I expect performance to go up a little given that was the first charge.
    - Safety handle to keep engine on. Can't attack a huge patch of weeds and let gravity do the rest.

    Positives
    - Power is great. No trouble at all with rundown lawn and very tall weeds (although I'm used to navigating tough patches with my old petrol which had a habit of always conking out).
    - So light, so easy to push (one handed too!). Glad I went with plastic. Basically begs you to do extra passes. Smaller blade length is basically inconsequential for me with how light and easy to push this thing is.
    - Folds up, fits into the boot of a sedan easily. Convenient carry handle (missing on steel deck version). Extremely easy to carry and handle.
    - No fumes. Less vibrations. Less noise - same as a vacuum really.
    - Catcher seems to easily hinge on and off although I never bag.

Personally I have a small yard so the range, charger and size didn't affect me. For me it ultimately came down to brushless or bunnings support. Given how often I need to use it, I took the brushless over the support since I don't plan on breaking it.

I also decided the $30 for an adapter offset the ecosystem thing
      https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/brisbane-city/power-tools/al…

  • Regarding the batteries. I was thinking of only getting the 5-in-1 but it doesn't come with batteries. So am I meant to purchased 2x 4 Am battery and a dual charger which = $50 + $50 + 50 = $150 to with the 5-in-1? is this correct?

if this is the case, I might as well buy this lawn mower too since it comes with 2 batteries and charger already so that's already equivalent to $150 value?

Can the battery be charged by themselves or do they need to have the fast charger to charge them?

    https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-21-…

    • +1

looks like you've answered your own question there, and yes you need one of their charger variants.

      • Thanjs for confirming -Whats the difference between the charger that comes with lawn mower and the one they sell seperately. Is it just the fast charge advantage?

        • the one with the mower kit (you're running out of time to still find one now) is standard charge time. maybe takes over an hour depending on battery depletion, though I have a charger from their drill and can use two chargers at once. seriously though, one standard charger is fine if you just plan to charge each battery on the morning and then let them cool before use (10 mins or so) as they recommend. your main challenge now will be to find remaining stock to buy.

          • @aumacca: Thanks so much! I bought the lawnmower and 5in1 just in case but was considering returning the lawn mower as our yard isnt thay big and thought the line cutter would be sufficien. but if this is the case ill just keep lawn mower since ill need the battery anyway.

  • Has anyone seen them discounted yet? For those places still in stock?

    • +1

I checked today and it was still $249 in my local
