  • anyone know if these do 'work' or still a bit new toy.
10x5 lawn backyard - buffalo grass… damn thick.

    • Videos and reviews of existing Luba 2 and Yuka mowers all look good.

Yikes. At $4k, I could pay someone to mow my lawn for 3 years.

        • Actually, $2.5k for the smaller version is more reasonable. Probably not worth it yet, but better than $4k.

    • No idea on what model but they're quite popular in Switzerland so I guess some of them work.

    • +1

In general the Mammotion stuff is legit good. But Buffalo is seerious concern. I know how much of a b*tch to cut that grass is. Best to really double check with someone who tried that combo. And since this is an unreleased weaker/cheaper product I would wait for market adoption.

I can't comment on this particular mower, but I've used a 'gardena sileno minimo' (which is a very basic model) for many years on buffalo with no problems at all. They don't mow like a traditional mower, instead they mow on a very regular basis (every day if you wanted, but typically every 2-3 days in high growth times) and take a very small amount off - so have no problem with tough grass. I've since moved onto a ecovacs goat g1 since I built a new house and didn't want to deal with boundary wire. I doubt I'll ever go back to manually mowing.

    I got "AI" fatigue.

Pretty sure my dunny paper now has AI also.

    • I was given a roll of dunny paper with trumps face blowing a kiss on it, for xmas. Definitely no intelligence there.

    You need this instead.

These devices use a combination of GPS + RTK + vision positioning, they're extremely accurate.

I have a full-size Yuka, and I think it works very well if you use it the way it's intended (even if you don't, it still does a pretty decent job).

Using it as a "maintenance" lawn mower, it works extremely well. Send it out every 2-3 days depending on growth rate of your grass, and it chops the top, evens it out, and generally keeps it looking pretty neat.

It avoids obstacles fairly well, but at the same time you then get areas that can get a little out of hand if you don't stay on top of them manually. I do this either via manual control of the mower as a finishing step when it's finished the main cut, or just go around with the whipper snipper if I've got it out anyway to do the edges.

The Yuka will not cope as well with steep slopes or big divots/holes in your lawn due to the front caster wheel, I've got a bunch of bags of top dress ready to go to even up the lawn to reduce the number of messages saying "I'm stuck!". This only really happens in one or two spots, it generally puts in a pretty good effort getting itself out of trouble, and will try different things before finally giving up if it's really stuck.

It actually does surprisingly well even if the grass is quite long, the problem you have then though is the lawn is covered in long grass clippings which is not great for the health of the lawn. The sweeper attachment may remedy this, I haven't purchased this though (yet).

Keeping everything nice and low cut helps with controlling weeds as well, or finding particularly vigorous weeds and yanking them out before they can really take hold.

    $50 off $1299 isn't really much of a deal, especially for a pre-order.

Or is it a guy getting points for his referral link?

  • -2

I hope they didn't develop this robot in HK, because what bloody grass do they have to test it on?

How many websites begin with au. ? Ends with .au, sure. Gotta be bogus if people are getting blocked with the link

    • +1

Plenty do, they use it for localisation purposes.

    • +1

Loads do. It's just a redirect to a shopify site so it's likely that it's a fairly new DNS record. I've had new sites I've set up giving false positives before. It does kind of indicate that OP may be affiliated in some way though if it is a new site.

  • I need the maxi version that'll do a couple of acres.

  • Well that is the question, do you get the Yuka mini $1299-$1899
    Cutting Width190mm
    Cutting Height20-60mm
    Cutting Disc1
    Cutting System5 pivoting razor blades
    Cutting Disc Motor Power88W

Or do you stage your lawn maintence. Cut upto 500㎡ for $1299, recharge and do the next stage…

Or go for one that can do more area with less staging of lawn maintenence.
    LUBA mini AWD 800 | 800㎡ $2,499.00 AUD
MAMMOTION LUBA mini AWD 1500㎡ $3,199.00 AUD
    Cutting Width200mm
    Cutting Height20-65mm
    Cutting System6 pivoting razor blades
    Cutting Disc Motor Power88W

I'll just wait until someone has this running on their front-lawn, steal it, factory reset it and score myself a free Robot Lawn Mower and will only use it on the back lawn

    • +1

For a communist, it's not stealing, it's "repatriating alienated property". I'm surprised you used the wrong expression.

  • It will have to be multiple stages…
    Manual - section 2.1.8 manual link: https://workdrive.zohoexternal.com/file/76fn208cced4e844d4e8…

Good point mentioning to steal it,
Has an alarm, supports airtag whatever that is. More likely you'll get 20year olds into airtag finding driving around looking for the stolen item.

  • Who fixes it when it breaks? Can't just drop it up to the local mower shop.

    • Best ask the seller if you're interested.

    • +1

I am interested, so asked them your question as the answer was worth knowing. They replied with this:

      Thank you for your response.

I hope the following answers can help you with your questions.

When repairs are required, you will need to pack the item in its original box to ensure full protection. Therefore, we recommend that you keep the original packaging of the mower.

During the warranty period, if the repair is caused by a problem with the product itself, we will provide shipping costs. For more info, you can check this link for referece.

Looks like the Yuka Mini has a 3 year warranty as per: https://us.mammotion.com/pages/after-sales-policy

So you will need to send it away for repairs if no service Centres near you and postage is covered until warranty end. Just need to make sure you keep the box it came in for sending.

  • Only thing that turns me off these robot lawmowers is the edges. I dont have a border around the edge of my property so this would just leave the grass growing against the wall/fence (which arguably is even uglier than having uniformly long grass).

I have been following this trend for a couple years now, surely it wouldnt be hard to attach an edge cutting wire that cuts the edges as well?

    • roundup may be the highly toxic solution you are looking for
