  • thobby, are you a rep?

  • Are these any better than the ones that Kmart sells for 5 bucks? They look identical….

It's like comparing a $5 K-mart T-shirts against boutique brand names that cost much more.

Knog is a fashion brand. They pretty much invented the silicon strap-on style bike light, and some would say that theirs are immeasurably better than the copies. The reality is that they all do the same thing, and you could get away with saving your money - if you can stand the indignity of having your hipster friends see a cheap Knog knock-off on your authentic vintage NJS-compliant fixie.

Personally, I dislike them all. There are much more effective lights out there for less money, and Knog's insistence on using non-rechargeable "coin" cells in a bike light is inexcusable.

Cheap deal for a Knog, expensive deal for a fairly mediocre bike light.

      • hear hear. great post.

My rear bike light kind of fell off…have you got any suggestions for a red light under say, 10$?

I bought bulk numbers of these a few years back:
          http://dx.com/p/5-led-bike-safety-strobe-light-3637
…and rate them very highly. A couple of AAA Enitime rechargeables keeps them going for months, and they're very waterproof. I have a couple of them mounted on each of my bikes for extra visibility and redundancy (in case one set of batteries are getting flat). I ride to work every day, all year, in Ballarat - our weather is dreadful, so water resistance is important to me.

The only downside is that they don't have a clip-on mount, so they can only attach to your bike. So I've now also bought a couple of these:
          http://dx.com/p/3w-2-mode-1-2-led-red-light-bike-bicycle-tai…
Very bright, really good lights, but not as waterproof as the barrel style ones (they just click together, rather than positively compressing the O-ring seal). But if I need to clip it on to my jacket or a saddle bag or something, it has a clip.

I had a couple like these Knog-offs (see what I did there?) as backup spares:
          http://dx.com/p/colorful-light-2-mode-tie-on-bike-light-keyc…
They were rubbish. Not very bright at all, and then water got in and they died. They used CR2032 coin cells anyway, so were going to cost money to keep going. I'm sure real Knogs are more durable, but I can't see the value when you can get genuinely good lights like the other links for <<$5.

        • cheers will definitely look into those lights!

Great price for Knog, i haven't used the Beetles but i have a Gekko and it's great.
Any chance you're getting the other models? I'd love a Blinder 4V

  • Definitely a bargain, cost at least $20 everywhere else. If you read the reviews on Wiggle.co.uk these are very highly rated, and looking around and speaking to others that have used them the knockoffs are not. I have bought some for all my bikes just now, thanks for posting.
