  • Wish these could run a plex server…

The NAS you put 4 of them in can

    • +5

You don't want Western Digital branded NAS though. Just constant security issues.

The drives themselves are excellent though.

      • security issues? please explain?

        • +6

Western Digital have had repeated security problems with their MyCloud products, one which many of us were affected by here allowed a random person to access and delete your files. I can't recall the exact response, but I can't find it because there have been multiple issues for the past three years alone, so it was hard to find the one that I was affected by.

          • +2

@BillyG687: Yes but do people actually use their software, I thought in the NAS context with these external drives people just shuck them.

Some of those devices couldn’t be patched because they didn’t have upgradeable firmware.

In 2017 they also had some embarrassing security flaws in their media player hardware.

Either way, WD clearly have a lot of work to do when it comes to their network-connected devices.

      • Don’t they have the USB port directly soldered to them rather than a normal SATA connector?

  • +1

I think you mean $25.475 per TB

    • +1

      Thanks lol, fixed it.

      • +10

I remember buying a Quantum 240MB (yes MB) hard drive for my BBS back in 1990 because the cost had just dropped to $1,200 making it $5 per MB. That was a bargain back then.

        • +3

I remember getting a 32MB pendrive in 2006. I was so happy because I was the first one to have a pen drive. Gone are those days!

          • +14

@nepalicurryinahurry: I remember punching holes in floppies to double their capacity…

          • @nepalicurryinahurry: My first flash drive was a 16MB model with hardware write protection switch, and hardware floppy emulation with boot support. Very useful features back then.

Before that was a bunch of floppy disks, and often copy the same files to two different disks to ensure no files are corrupted on the way home LOL.

          • +1

@nepalicurryinahurry: Mine cost $64 and was worth every cent

            • @Jonzay: I got it as a gift from my uncle. Was a cheap chinese pendrive. Lasted for two months. Haha

        • +6

You can also buy a house for 80K back then, that was the real bargain.

        • I got a 1gb USB key for $160 at a swap meet in 2003 … it was a bargain!

        • Provide the ozbargain link to that deal or it never happened :D I used to run a BBS back in the day, I think I used PBBS from memory. Only operated at night due to one landline in the house, and it was primarily for legend of the red dragon and another text based game that everyone seemed to like.

  • +13

I really thought hdd prices would have gone below $20/tb by now.

    • +4

Well to be fair we are supposedly reaching the theoretical limit of these drives if we keep making them smaller they can't magnetise. Also greed

      • +2

I've spoke to a few hard drive maker staff, and they've basically said that they can build larger capacities but the demand/pricing just isn't there yet but there's plenty to go for now.

    • In a 4TB SSD post I lamented that mechanical HDD prices had not fallen in the past year. For the past 6 months there are daily SSD bargain posts but very few for mechanical HDDs. Given a choice between a 20TB 3.5" 7200 rpm drive and a "theoretical" 20 TB 2.5 inch SSD at the same price, we would all choose the latter (quieter, smaller, less things to fail).

A 4TB SSD is sufficient for normal people (those who mostly stream) but not for data hoarders with large collexions.

    • If inflation wasn't as high as it has been the past 12 months you would probably find it could have been below $20/tb

  • Does anyone know the drive inside of these and whether or not these can be taken out to put into a NAS?

    • +2

White label drives WD180EDGZ which is speculated to be similar/same as the Ultrastar DC HC550.

Some may require slight modding in order to get the drive to power up on older power supplies. (Ie. You need to tape up a pin on the connector so that 3.3V does not get through. Google White Label 3.3V or similar)

There's allegedly a newer revision that does not require this, but I have the older one.

      • +1

If you’re using MOLEX to SATA (yes I know the limerick), apparently this isn’t needed either. Something about the extra pin from SATA power

        • +1

Correct, there is no 3.3v on a molex.

        • +4

Molex does not have a 3.3V pin so unless they had voltage stepdown, the adapter won't have it. Most SATA drives (outside of those wittle bitty drives that they had in those old iPods) don't use 3.3V to power themselves.

For those wondering what the limerick is: "Molex to SATA lose your data"

Although when they melt, I'd probably be more concerned about my house than the data on the drives.

          • @Namidairo: Crimped Molex to SATA is fine, but the vast majority are moulded which is fire prone.

I use these types of drives in converted 5.25” hotswap cages, so no need for me to tape up the 3.3v pin. I think that’s the case for a lot of backplanes?

            • @skittlebrau: Even then, it's a heat due to resistance vs current issue.

Even a shit moulded 2 way splitter seldom has issue; it just gets warm. It's when people start going 3 or 4 way that you start seeing smoke shows, typically, and it's because they daisychain them….

    • I am running 3 of these in a NAS. I had to put tape over the pin on one of them as instructed in this article

  • Nice find!

What websites are people using for finding deals now that Amazon killed off DiskPrices AU?

    • +19

I prefer to have privacy and not be at the mercy of a company that randomly kills off services.

    • Can you share how to get 30TB free on Google drive? Maybe can do a client-side encryption so it won't matter if Google can see it.

    • same

These were only $384 last year https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/712348

    • +2

price seems has gone up in past few months

      • +2

have you seen AUD/USD exchange rate lately?

        • -5

          Anthony Albanese

        • Aud was 0.68 when that deal was last year. Now 0.64 at the time this was posted. So would only be 408 based on that

    • +1

      Good old time.
I bought 2 18TB @~$400 the red pro around July this year.
      It was from amazon US.
Maybe just wait for black friday.
      Its not far now anyway.

  • find a cheaper one for sub $300

    • -1

      what do you mean ?

      • +3

I think he was sleep talking lol

    • Not for 18TB, maybe 16TB

  • +2

Is there a specific reason HDD prices seem to have gone up or is it just in line with everything else getting more expensive?

    • +6

      Weak Aussie dollar?
      Poor supply?
      Inflation?

Not actually sure, but maybe those play into it.

    • +1

Weak AUD, and Amazon could be saving better deals for Black Friday / Cyber Monday.

  • +1

If anyone can figure out why prime status isnt recognised in amazon US this 20TB deal gets you to $23/tb once you convert your USD$279.99 + USD$16.07 delivery https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09VCXWPQG

    • +1

Because you have Australian Prime not US prime, also you would have to pay ~$30US GST anyways, so its not $23 per tb

      • +1

Yep you're right, forgot GST! Which brings it up to being the same if not worse based on the exchange rate you get.

    • +1

For those interested the 20TB from US, comes out to around $506 so $25.30 /TB (AUD)
due to GST + Shipping. And on a whacky note, ordering 2 together is more expensive that purchasing each separately. Was about $531ea ($26.60/TB) when ordering 2.. So just dont do it that way.

      • Bare in mind you need a US Prime account to take advantage of that offer. Also if the drive need to go back you would likely need to pay return shipping.

  • I bought a 10Tb from Amazon 5 years ago, came in an Amazon box with no padding and was dropped onto concrete floor. Seriously?

    • Still do that lol

    • Can confirm, 4 years ago, my two 14Tb WD Red from Amazon delivery man was throwing over gate, fortunately WD packed it in good protected boxes. Still working both, no problem.

  • -1

The 20tb WD elements were cheaper than this today, but you had to buy via Amazon US store.

    • How much were they?

      • will be usd 325.67 incluing GST. You can try US prime for free if you never did it

    • Serverpartsdeals have some compelling deals you can get any time without having to wait for prime day deals. They seem well regarded on reddit datahoarders sub..

  • +4

What a time to be alive. When I think how much I paid for all my old 4/6TB drives. Can't believe they still running, should probably screenshot what's on them, and backup the most important stuff.

    • +1

Completely agree with this, young me literally blew hundred of dollars on multiple 4TB HDDs just so that I could go to a public LAN party and be one of the largest providers.
Hashing all my stuff in DC++ so damn long in the end.

  • Does this use European power cable?
    If so, any alternatives?

    • Get a $3 adapter?

    • +1

Many people have reported success contacting WD support and saying you bought from amazon.com.au but received the wrong power adapter, and they will send a replacement AU adapter for free. I have also successfully done this myself last year.

      • Thanks for the reply.

  • How long can external harddisk can save our data for?

Any suggesetion for the most reliable brand for around $100-200?

i dont think i need much of memory say 6-10 TB would take its time to be completely filled

    Cheers

    • +1

$100-200 will NOT get you 6-10TB. Closest would be the 6TB on this link which is $213.90

    • +4

Whatever you end up choosing, make sure you buy a pair - you need a second drive to backup the first drive, because all drives fail one day.

      • is this true? genuine question here :)

  • i took this risk on ebay, no issues so far 12TB Exo $280
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/804630

    • Better from Amazon. You can return it if there are issues.

  • Nah, wait for sub $380

  • I just shucked this last week, pretty easy process following this guide

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbdwWGB6B_M

Trickiest bit is opening the case, i had to use a small flat screwdriver

    • do we lose 5 years warranty for that ?

      • +1

According to the images this only has 2 years of warranty

  • I am currently running one of these 18TB drives along with 3x 8TB drives in a 4 bay enclosure. I am fast running out of space so i will either have to buy another enclosure along with the next drive or retire an 8TB drive and add it into my Emby server.

  • Good drives for Shucking
