Had huge dramas buying from these guys in the past. Despite the item (a Panasonic GF2) saying it was in stock it took them over two weeks to ship it to me, and didn't respond to any calls or emails in the intervening time.

    • 2 weeks is a normal time of drop shipping from Hong Kong or China (assuming the goods from there)

Not so much the time it took, rather the lack of communication or response.

      • Normal economy mail stuff from China tends to take around three weeks but don't they normally send expensive items like this via DHL? In which case it really should be within a week.

  • this, or the rx100?

    help appreciated

Take a look at this comparison: http://snapsort.com/compare/Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-GF5-vs-Sony-…

Quite similar with three major differences:

Form factor: Compact vs hybrid MILC (mirrorless interchangeable lens camera)
Lenses: Fixed (albiet great quality) vs interchangable.
Sensor size: 1" (best sensor on the market for compacts) vs Micro 4/3.

The form factor and fixed vs interchangble lens is very much a personal choice. e.g. Do you mind sacrificing some image quality to get a smaller camera? Do you want to be able to change lenses or not?

The sensor size gives the GF5 an objective advantage. It is significantly larger and therefore will take better photos - especially in low light. Compare the 1" to the Four Thirds in this pic: http://www.dpreview.com/learn/Articles/Glossary/Camera_Syste…

The size of the sensor is also the main reason the GF5 is larger.

I would personally pick the GF5 - but I like tinkering with lenses, settings etc.

i looked at this exact website, but unlike you, I had no idea what was written.

thing is I dont think i need the interchangeable lenses, however, at this price, with these added benefits you mentioned, why not really.

only reason im considering this is that it's not even that much larger. i mean the rx100 is extremely compact for what it offers, but other cameras arent even that much smaller than this lumix.

thanks for your reply, i think ill wait till the end of the year, do some mroe research.

        • RX100 has very good reputation as it's a well-balanced compact over size, outputs, performances and functionalities (except of price though). Some say this is the best compact camera ever and I agree on that. The only problem is "price" - I think it's little bit overpriced because there is no direct competitor actually. If I'm forced to say, Panasonic LX7 and Nikon 1 can be regarded as the competitors but LX7 has a smaller sensor and Nikon 1 is MILC so they are not direct competitors.

So it's a good idea to wait til another challenger's coming, which will pull down the price effectively.

I am personally waiting for RX10 which exists on rumours only yet - perhaps that will have an APS-C or a Micro Four Thirds-like sensor with the similar performances / functionalities of RX100. Frankly speaking, there are so many compacts with DSLR-size sensors already but I like none of them because of their performances. I'm really disappointed by them for AF and /or low-light dexterity. That's why I am waiting for that SLR-grade compact from Sony.

Before splashing your hard earn $$$,

Check this out, how Pro Photographer could deliver badass pics from cheapo camera :)

    • Definitely shows that the person taking the shots is the most important part of the photographer/camera relationship. Though a cheapo phone camera is still no good if the subject is moving, there little light, you don't want to spend 15 mintues in post with each picture or you want to display your pictures on anything other than a standard size computer screen.

I'd hardly class the iPhone as a "cheapo camera" either - considering it costs nearly twice as much as this GF5 haha.

      • True. The vid shows how quick these pro photographers to adapt with the camera.

That's the old iphone 2, with lots of scratch and dings all over lol.

    • That's really important point I think. I agree. But I still think that it is much much easier to earn some more money than having good skills about cameras, at least for me. The money is straightforward and stackable but the art isn't.
