      • For peace of mind cancel once you get the phone.

      • +3

Yeah they tried that one too, saying I needed to stay on the service for 3 months. But then he also admitted that they get paid by Optus per quarter or something along those lines.

My understanding is that they get some kickback for the initial signup, then more for x months of service. Either way HN isn't losing money on this deal, Optus is.

    • Lol can't cancel for 3 months, but hey, buy 5 optus services, rofl.
Nah they don't make commission or get any bonuses for sales at all do they now.

      • I worked in telco retail, you need to be billed 2-3 months for them to get the commission.
So they are just telling that to get their commission.

  • +2

Joyce Mayne had an additional offer in-store: Pixel 8 Pro 128 GB + Pixel Watch 2 for $0 when signing up for the $99/month Optus plan on a 24 month contract. If cancelling the Optus service immediately, the cancellation cost would be $1,188. According to the offer page on their system, this offer finishes on 10 October. I decided to go with the $69/month offer and receive just the phone, as I don't want the watch. But thought it might appeal to someone.

    • +1
      • I'm pretty sure the offer I saw on screen said 128 GB.

    • +3

If you want the 256GB version, you need to pay an additional $99. The 512GB version is $219. The 128GB version with a smart watch is $99/24 months

    • I was also offered this, did the math quickly and declined as I was planning to keep the Optus plan.

  • Signed up today. Ported my prepaid number since it was one month left, so might as well. Porting finished while we were still waiting for the paperwork to print, so I chucked the Optus sim in on the spot. Didn't discuss cancellation whatsoever, they just spent time to ensure my desired device (256GB Bay colour) was definitely not allocated to anyone else as apparently they had very limited stock of the particular combination for release day.

I'll probably just smash the 100GB until the phone's in hand and port back out to another 365 prepaid sim. I actually would have considered staying with Optus, if not for the fact that I was only getting 2-5mbps speed at my local Westfield. ~900mbps on 5G when I'm at home.

    • +1

This is exactly what I did, why complicate things bringing up the topic about cancelling. There is no point.

  • +8

Just ordered mine. Unlike others here my experience with HN was pleasant, the guy was relieved when I said I wanted a new number (less work for him), except the system screwed up so he needed to do it all over the phone with Optus. All in all I was in and out in 30 mins. Upgraded to 256gb for $100. Nobody mentioned OzB. HN was a ghost town though, massive store and maybe 3 customers including me.

I'm comfortable with risk, so it's time to cancel this contract now.

For anyone curious, I found this guide from the WP linked below me, pasting the snippet about cancelling but read the whole thing it's very informative.

    Pasted from WP:
"EDIT — I'm back home. Contract cancelled in ~5mins via the Optus "Message us in My Account" function. Live chat agent did their best to retain me but I just played a polite game of CTRL+C then CTRL+V of:

"I appreciate you asking that, but I just want to cancel this consumer credit contract under Australian Consumer Law and pay the Maximum Plan Cancellation Fee of $828 as stipulated in CIS for contract number 46******* for service number 04** ******"

Signed up today because I was afraid that they might remove/change it or deny it after release date. Went in and found a sale person to ask about pre-order. They knew immediately and asked if I wanted to do it through the plan deal and if I saw it on a website. Other than some hassles on verifying my identity, which took 20-30~ mins, the process was smooth. Decided to not discuss anything about cancellation fees since I pretty much got everything from reading the comments. I commented earlier about the credit check, they just asked me about my resident and occupation, then I got approved.

I ended up paying $100 upfront to upgrade to the 256gb storage. Got two papers, one for the Optus contract and an invoice of $100. They told me that it might be a week before they have the phone in stock due to the current number of orders. Probably not gonna cancel until I actually get the phone, just to avoid any issues.

I saw a post on whirlpool talking about the details of this deal from Optus end: https://whrl.pl/RgEc8M (if anyone is curious).

    • +1

      you start paying now right

      • +2

The plan started immediately but I don't have to pay anything right now since it is a post-paid plan.

    • Hi did you get your phone yet? Can I check which number did they call you? Your new number or your main number?

      • Not yet, I called them just now and they said that the first batch arrived but my name is not on it, so I'll have to wait for the next one (next couple of days or weeks??).

Back when I ordered, the sales person wrote down to call my main number but when I was talking on the phone, the guy asked me if my new number is active because they will call that number when it's here… well I haven't canceled it yet so I'll just watch out for both.

Also, regarding your previous comment, I got an invoice for the first month so I guess $69 immediately (even though, it's a post-paid). Btw did you end up also pre-ordering one as well?

  • +3

Just signed up with $100 (lost $1) upgrade.
The guy kept asking are you intend to cancel, I said no.
Phone passing for 40 mins and finally got it.
256gb blue is the most popular.

    • Wait is the upgrade to 256gb supposed to be $99 or $100?

      • +1

$99, the one that signed me up asked another passing manager and was told $99 not $100.

  • Might go and do this tomorrow. Great deal. Wasn't thinking about upgrading but when the price is right…

  • +3

I'm cancelling my contract now via Optus's online chat support (purchased the phone earlier today)

If anyone wants the run down on how it went I'll happily share. Currently waiting to get it started.

    • What version and color of Pixel phone did you get? I got the 256GB Porcelain, but I'm starting to think I should have gotten the 512GB Obsidian. I have Google Drive and 1TB ASUS cloud drive, but I'm still the type of person who regrets things later.

      • +2

I got the 256GB Bay (light blue). Honestly, if this colour had the 512GB option I'd have probably gotten it but I didn't want a black phone, just seems boring, even though it'll live under a case and likely never be seen unless I end up with a clear case.

256GB is still the sweet spot though I think. The HN guy, if correct, told me I'd get 6 months of 2TB Google Cloud support for free so worst case, that gives me 6 months to get my house in order but in reality, I've lived with 256GB for 4 years now and my phone still has 90GB spare so I'm sure I'll cope.

        • Thanks ~

        • May I ask if the process of applying to cancel the contract went smoothly? To be honest, I will probably wait until I get the phone before I cancel the contract. Because the HN receipt is actually a $0 ($99) phone contract, which shows the monthly payment and total cost. I am a little worried that if I cancel now, it will cause trouble in getting the phone later.

          • +2

@RickyMoon: Full write-up below. But in short yes it was a painless process if you have a spare 20 minutes or so (10 minutes spent waiting for the chat to start). I also addressed my view on getting the phone after cancelling contract, but everything I say is simply my opinion, just a guy on OzB…

      • How much was upgrade to 512gb?

    • Please let us know how it went? Any pushback from their side?

      • +1

My full write up below, see points 1. 2. and 3. For their 'pushback'. All in all it was pretty smooth sailing.

  • +40

This is my sequence of events for today from purchasing and cancelling my contract. I noticed some comments from introverts being unsure how to proceed through this so, from one introvert to another, I hope this will help. It's a bit of a read, I'm not good at condensing these things :)

    • I purchased the P8P today and cancelled my Optus contract today. OzB / cancellations wasn't mentioned, keep it simple, get in, get out. I purchased with a new number, it was smooth as butter from HN.

Why I'm not concerned about not getting my phone on 12/10:

    • The reason I didn't wait for the phone to be in my hands first - In the contract and tax invoice, the handset is being invoiced and supplied by Harvey Norman. The invoice shows that it is a "NOSUBSIDY" carrier product (ie Optus is not involved in the retail sell-through of the hardware). There is no reason for me to believe I won't receive my phone from HN on Thursday, my business with HN was completed today, what happened thereafter between myself and Optus doesn't concern them.

If you're bored, here's what happens behind the scenes:

    • Even when you cancel on day one and get a half-price phone everyone is still a winner, basically. Nobody actually loses money on this. Optus bills the maximum plan cancellation fee of $828 under Plan ID 36768704. HN gets their $85 sign-on commission from that $828. Optus pays the agreed – heavily subsidised – hardware cost to Google. Optus does slightly better than break-even when all is said and done. Optus sures-up prioritised status with Google for carrier code updates in exchange for reportable handset sell-through volume.

    How I cancelled:

    • Log into Optus > Help & Contact > Message Us
(You should get your contract number & service number from your tax invoice, you will need that next)

I was polite but assertive, I'm sure you could cut through the crap faster without being rude though. If they push back just reiterate your rights which I've included below, the whole process took 20 minutes, 10 of those minutes were spent waiting for the chat to start. And as others have pointed out, if you can't be bothered doing this, just buy a $2 SIM and port out, and the contract will be cancelled.

    • Hi xxxxx, I purchased a Google Pixel 8 Pro today, due to personal reasons I need to discontinue this contract. I am requesting to cancel my contract and agree to pay the $828 cancellation fee as specified in the CIS. My contract number is: 46xxxxxxx and my service number is 04xx xxx xxx
    1. They asked for the reason for the cancellation (you could say whatever you like, it's none of their business but I was nice. I said my financial situation has been negatively impacted at work and I need to exit the contract early)
    2. They then cited the cancellation fee as a means to stop me from leaving. I reconfirmed having read the CIS and accept my responsibility to pay out the Early Termination Fee of $828.
    3. They then offered to reduce the plan cost to retain me.
I replied: "I appreciate you offering that xxxxxx, however, I'd still like to exercise my right to cancel this consumer credit contract, in accordance with Australian Consumer Law, and am prepared to pay the Maximum Plan Cancellation Fee of $828, as outlined in the CIS, for the contract number 46xxxxxxx and service number 04xx xxx xxx. I have decided this to be the best decision for me. <—- This is where I expected them to give up, and they did.

She became very short with me from that point and I understand, I was now a loose end for them, they did not want to waste their time talking to me, nor I them, so this part took seconds. I got 1-word answers, I had to confirm my cancellation date, was provided with a receipt number and never received a goodbye from her :)

Hope this helps my fellow OzBargain'ers.

And for those who intend to stay on the 24-month contract, see point 3. above, the opportunists amongst you may try this simply to get discounted contract terms 🤌 (*not financial advice) <— if you do, let me know what discount you got 😉

    • +2

My experience is similar and almost got the guy to offer a month to month, but after a while he said actually I still have to pay the termination fee

    • I would expect Optus are losing a fair bit on this. (thats fine with me).

Any evidence their cost for the device is under $700? (700 + gst + HN commission)

I'm guessing they just figure they will move enough units that are not cancelled that it isnt worth fixing the deal with HN.

      • +3

Reduce the cost then cancel and pay a lower rate than the 69 month

    • +1

Thanks for providing that much text to help us lazy ones

I would happily stay if they reduce the cost to let's say 49 per month, seems tough though.

      • +1

Glad I could help. I have no idea how much they'd be willing to slice off that cost, at the time I didn't care and didn't want to drag things out but I am curious. 10%? 15%? If you're convincing about your intention to leave but leave the door open to compromise then perhaps somewhere in that range. I'm not the best one to ask though as I have no experience with contracts like this, I've always bought outright and used lower data 365 day prepaid plans. I generally steer clear of credit hits too but this deal was too sweet to pass and it is the phone I intended to upgrade to anyway.

But as for $49, that would be a 29% discount, probably unlikely.

    • Does anyone know if we are able to port in a number into an ongoing Optus plan?

If they do end up discounting the plan, I got the plan on a new number so it would not be useful unless they agreed to port in my number from AldiMobile.

    • +1

Interesting, I'm keeping the plan, so it would be nice to get a reduced monthly fee. I might give it a crack

      Thanks :)

    • what cancellation date did you do? same day you signed up?

      • Yeah same date. Figured I'm not going to all this trouble to use a future date and risk the $69 charge.

  • I'm existing Optus customer with month-to-month plan, no lock-in contract. Anyone know if I will be eligible for the offer?

    • +1

Yes, just request a new number

  • +2

Can anyone tell me if I stay with them for 12 months instead of canceling straight away, can I leave with no more to pay?

    12 months * $69 = $828 = Maximum Plan Cancellation Fee of $828

I'm essentially getting 12 months of a free phone plan by not canceling early am I not?

    • +3

its something along the lines of 50% of the remaining months. So you would be up for around $400.

      • +5

The salesman that I had at HN knew exactly what I was there to do and already knew about the OzBargain thread and what everyone is doing well before I ever hinted at cancelling the plan. He had already sold 16 Pixel 8s yesterday alone. Everyone around here is so paranoid about HN cancelling this deal even though it's win-win for them regardless as explained earlier.

The sales rep explained to me that unless I was on a sub $35 per month pre/post paid plan, I'm paying the same amount of money whether I stay with Optus for the 24 months, or if I exit out of the plan, pay the fee and STILL keep my old telco on $35 per month.

Considering that you get 100gb per month on 5G you would be mad to change back to another telco unless you have an extremely large aversion to Optus or just have poor reception in your area.

        • +2

Considering that you get 100gb per month on 5G you would be mad to change back to another telco unless you have an extremely large aversion to Optus or just have poor reception in your area.

If you need that much data. I'm paying $12 a month and havent run out of data in ages (6gb limit).

        • +1

Just on that HN comment, yes they certainly don't lose money for people cancelling on day 1. As has been mentioned, very worst case HN get paid $85 from Optus even if you cancel 5 minutes later. If you stay for 24 months they also earn a 2.5% monthly trailing commission paid from Optus. That's only about $40 so in reality HN get the lion's share even if you walk on day 1. At the volume they're selling these things, Gerry isn't going hungry.

I was actually surprised they didn't have a bunch of crap on hand to upsell me. Where is the screen protectors and cases? That's where they really make their money. Gerry fell asleep on this one? The guy did try walking me past their chargers but before he could finish his sentence I told him I had a dozen GaN chargers at home already and we kept walking :)

        • +2

out of curiosity…..why did you have to tell the HN guy about cancelling the Optus plan? its none of their business. its between you and Optus.

          • +1

@Munki Kundi: Not every salesman in the world is out to screw over every pensioner of their last dollar. I felt comfortable with him and he volunteered the information that he knew what everyone was doing before I even confirmed it with him. He didn't care, they get their cut, and he looks like a brilliant salesman, selling 16+ in one day alone.

And fair enough @Duff5000, I'm glad your plan works for you well, I just wasn't sure if many other people had done the sums in regards to cancelling / staying on the plan versus what they currently already pay, maybe everyone has but nobody had been talking about it.

        • This is true. I'm trying to work out which is better, cancel or stay. Considering I'm effectively paying interest free for the phone and a $35/month for 5g is close to the cheapest around, it's still worth it to stick with it. And I won't have to pay out $830 in one go. I have a few more days to decide I guess.

          • +2

@revhedted: I made the argument to myself that it works out better if I stayed with Optus as far more data, I pay the same at the end of the two months either way, and IF I was an "investor bro", then I could also tell myself I keep that $828 in the bank account to reinvest elsewhere in the mean time, or just as a little rainy day emergency fund.

        • +1

I went in to HN intending to cancel after, then came to the same idea you present here. I'm better off by about $350 over 2 years if I cancel my current plan instead of the HN one.

  • +6

If you cant be bothered chasing optus to cancel the plan via chat/over the phone, just buy a $2 pre paid SIM and port out.
It will automatically cancel the Optus service and they will send you out a bill for the cancellation fee.

Some require you to recharge when activating the prepaid SIM, like Voda - so don't get a Voda one.

    • Can you suggest which $2 ones you know let you port without charge?

      • +4

        Get this for $2 profit.

      • I bought bunch of lebara startup packs for $4 each from Coles.

    • +2

probably better to port over to a boost sim card that has $2 cashback profit. 2 birds 1 stone

      • Won't you have to pay for the days on the Optus plan while you wait for your Boost SIM to arrive in the post?

        • +1

If you don't cancel on day one, you pay $69 for the first month regardless. You'll also have 1 less month of cancellation fees though, so it'd only be $34.5 more.

          • @Benjamin7711: Thanks. I didn't want to risk cancelling yesterday after I signed up so I'll just port out with the Boost SIM on the last day of my billing cycle.

            • +1

@dazweeja: That's what I'm doing. Stuff having to chat to Optus staff.

  • +10

Some of these comments and questions are insane… Some of you make it seem like your doing a mission impossible drop from the ceiling to get the phone.

    • +5

Personally, I had the Mission Impossible song playing during my encounter with HN, standard procedure I thought.
… I did however, use the front door.

      • +2

Haha my mission impossible song was playing when I was trying to navigate through all the other departments to electrical and hoping I wouldn't be sold a couch, 12 piece outdoor setting, with insurance in case it rains

  • This is such a good deal and its so tempting. 100gb per month, good new phone, so much going for it. But I recently activated a 12 month boost plan and don't want it to go to waste :(. Ahh, this would've been perfect lol

    • You could just cancel it like the others have and have a fantastic deal

    • Read the comments friend.

    • +2

Most cheapskates here (myself included) have 365 day prepaid plans, just order with a new number so it doesn't impact your Boost plan and cancel. You'll forgo that 100GB which you don't currently have or presumably need, so no real loss. Instead you'll get a phone at half price.

      • Bladeyyy21 and other people not reading ozb is how optus and HN are making real money on this.

  • +1

With the risk of getting shot down hard, why are so many people wanting to cancel? Sure, if you intend to sell the phone for a profit (perhaps there's be influx online and will reduce the price to under $828 - watch this space), but if you're keeping the phone, don't you have to pay a monthly fee for a service with 'someone' anyway?

Maybe this is a strategic decision from Optus, getting a HUGE bunch of $828 upfront dollars from buyers rather than spreading the cost over a period of time. Upfront $$$ is best for any business. Optus then still make their money from those of you cancelling but using their Optus pre-paid/post-paid/resellers carrier services.

I'm personally hoping to be one to get a P8P on this deal, upgrade from P6P, port from Telstra and pay around the same monthly fee with a new phone (albeit with Optus). I had Optus in the past and overall happy with their service. I just wish this plan had 30 minutes International included that Optus used to include (perhaps still do on their plans).

    • +2

In my case, I already purchased 365 day prepaid from Boost, so have no need for additional plans.

    • +1

It depends from person to person. I'm like K G B above me and have a cheap 365-day prepaid plan (220GB which is enough for me, I work from home and if I'm going to be out for a while I've gotten into the habit of downloading my YouTube content before I leave the house. For me, this phone is cheaper than the Huawei P30 Pro (2019) it replaces which is amazing.

For a heavy user though, totally different story. Maybe they're best to see it out, or they could take the tip I left in my giant post above and bargain Optus down on that $69 monthly cost. That's what I'd do if I needed the 100GB/month.

    • +1

With the risk of getting shot down hard, why are so many people wanting to cancel?

I don't use the 6gb i have per month already. Why pay $23 more per month for data i dont need? (the effective cost of this optus plan being ~$35/m)

    • +1

I'll never use that much data and only pay less than $15 per month. The whole point is to get the phone outright cheap.

    • +2

No one is reselling, Pixels aren't iPhones.

Plus the market would be flooded, as soon as you put up the price to profit it's less enticing for a buyer.

Alot of the population go on plans, upgrade…they don't buy outright. Most those people, are people on the forum!

The actual plan is pretty good value, even monthly plans are $35-$45 a month with no phone.

If someone buys outright, then is on a $25 plan…it's still $1,400. It's barely a saving, and you gotta outlay cash.

It's not much of a saving, so no idea why so many people dump the plan.

I did it last year, because company pays my phone plans!

      • +1

Most dumping the plan do so because they're on a cheap-as-chips 365 prepaid plan. My $220 plan ($18/month equiv) if we're including that, brings my total expense to $1,048 = $651 saving which is worth it to me considering I'd go nowhere near using that 100GB monthly.

One could argue that $651 can go towards next years Pixel 9 Pro, thus compounding the savings.

        • I made a mistake there. Apples for apples means I should have doubled that $220 cost (24 months not 12 months) meaning the difference would be $431. So the gap isn't massive but for me personally it's still be best option.

    • It can be as straight forward as people simply don't want to switch to Optus for one reason or another. Maybe they've got a cheaper or better value plan they want to stick with. Maybe they prefer a different network for coverage reasons. Maybe they just don't want to deal with Optus on an ongoing basis or go onto a 24 month contract.

Ultimately it doesn't matter to the buyer who the money is going to. Any way you cut it, there's a cost associated for having a given mobile service. Showing the cost for cancelling the Optus plan you've just signed up for is the easiest, clearest way of showing the "overall" cost.

If someone was considering buying the phone outright, it appears this is the cheapest way of doing so.

  • +4

For those that have gone through the cancellation process, what discounts or perks does Optus try to sell you to get you to stay?

    • +2

This is a question I want to know the answer to aswell.

      • Same here!

        • Trying to find out now

          • @chromium: Thank you. Let us know how you go!

If you can get the 12mnths X $35pm then I'll be doing the same. That's an excellent deal imo.

            • +1

@Bond-007WA: Not getting anywhere near that, they're offering nothing lol.

Best I got was $10 for 6 months!

Telling me that the system won't allow them to do longer. Sounds like BS

              • @chromium: Bugger. That's a shame. I may give it a try myself and see what happens.

Did you end up accepting the $10 off?

                • +1

@Bond-007WA: Still talking to them. I'm planning on keeping the plan anyway, so anything I get is a bonus :)

                  • @chromium: Kk. I hear you. I'm going to try and see how I go. My poor financial situation has changed. 😉

                      @Bond-007WA: Good luck.

I ended up taking the 6 months. They probably called my bluff :)
Still it's reduced the price by a further $60 :)
If I cancelled and kept my old Woolworths mobile plan I'd only be $2/month better off over the 2 years with a much worse plan and coverage.
They said I can try and ask for a discount again in 6 months :)

                      • @chromium: Lol, ask or threaten to cancel every 6 mnths, probably get further with the cancel route over asking nicely for a discount.

                        • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: I threatened to cancel tonight and they were just like "ok then" lol

                          • @chromium: Follow up from today's convo with Chat.

Tried the same but didn't get the 100GB plan for $35 offered.

After a chat with their supervisor I got a $10 discount + 10% off per month. That's $52.10 from the next billing cycle.

@Bond-007WA: Nice work, way better than what I got. I might have to try again :)

    • jsut $10 discount for original. then tried to do $20 on month to month optus choice but still have to pay early termination fee lol

      • I'd take that. On chat now, but they stopped responding lol

  • Do we get a tax invoice of the cost of the phone when picking it up?

    • No…you get phone for free….you pay contract termination fees around ,$850
