I can only speak for my location in regional QLD (Townsville), but Optus has improved immensely here, on par with Telstra. I routinely travel between Townsville and Cairns and now never lose reception.

5G coverage however is not as widespread as Telstra - but given that 5G is a bit of a battery hog and 4G speeds suit my needs it doesn't bother me.

    • +1

box hill VIC area - far improved than others. At par with telstra if not better in this area.

  • Is it a good idea to wait, signup and pickup phone together same day? Later cancel connection if needed

    • I think the only downside is stock availability.

Nobody has mentioned colour but I'm planning to get the Bay (light blue) which I presume will be the most popular. Failing that I'd get the black but I don't want Grandpa Biege. Honestly, the colour schemes for phones this year have been terrible.

      • -4

        lol how old are u?

        • +9

Old enough for black, adventurous enough for light blue, too young for grandpa biege.

          • +1

@Click_It: Mate don't diss the beige. Cleanest colour of them all!

            • +1

@ac1410: I stand corrected and withdraw my statement.

  • Just signed up at HN and paid the $99 extra to upgrade to 256gb

I think I might wait until the phone is in my hands before cancelling.

    • +7

      $99? I got stung $100!

      • no chupa chup for you!

  • So if I signed up and waited till I got the phone to cancel would I pay 1 month $69 + $828?

      • +2

no it would be howsoever days active /30/2 *69 +793

        • but maybe most probably it would be 828, if canceled before 15 days and 793+69 if cancelled after 15 days and before 45 days.

    • +1

69 times 24=1656, ie, the minimum cost of the plan.

69 times 24 times 0.5=828, ie, the maximum cancellation fee, which is monthly cost times the residual months on the contract times good will factor.

When you cancel, expect to pay either:

      69 + 793.5 = 862.50
      0 + 828 = 828.00

To minimise the cost, sign up on launch day (12th Oct).

However, they may not have stock, hence the preorder. Though this sucks you into paying the 1st month of the contract potentially, costing a net 34.5.

They may not have stock at all till the deal expires on the 19th, if you try for a same day collection &cancellation.

FYI deal is still on (nothing's changed yet) and so easy to sign up.
There was no need to discuss cancellation. Please do your research here and don't ruin it for future buyers.

The HN rep that helped me was lovely and said 7 people already did it before me. Some even lined up at opening… lol.

    • Confirming I received Optus contract paperwork and a HN invoice for the phone preorder and $99 payment for 256Gb upgrade.
    • Got home and cancelled my service right away over live chat. $828 + billing usage confirmed.

I doubt there will be any issues on pick up because the invoices and contracts will cover it all.

I imagine Optus subsidises the device cost for HN.
By paying the cancellation fee, I've already fulfilled my obligations with Optus. Now HN needs to complete the transaction of goods with me.

    • +2

mate would you be kind enough to tell us introverts what did you say to cancel the contract over chat?
      TIA

      • +5

        Also introvert here.

        1. Can you help me cancel my mobile service?
        2. When asked for reason, "I changed my mind about my mobile service plans between post paid and prepaid" (I mean it's not a lie)
Followed up by "I've done my calculations already and won't change my mind with any other offers."

Few questions and procedural retention steps in between, then done.

        • +6

          amazing.

i am that inotrvert, i have to plan the whole battle in my mind before i say excuse me… sucks

      • +2

If you're seriously introverted you could just port the number out to somewhere else (e.g. boost prepaid SIM). Don't need to talk to anyone, just pay out the cancellation

    • +4

Personally I would have waited 6 days until I had phone in hand. Reason being, HN has to enter the phone IMEI, serial number, etc etc onto their system once they get the phone (which would be the 12th at the earliest) and cancelling Optus before then risks things messing up so they cant update their systems, who knows, which might leave you just paying $800 to Optus for breach of contract fee with no phone.

You gain nothing by cancelling 6 days early, but you risk ruining the whole hack by doing so. Just my 2 cents.

      • His gain is avoiding the first $69 monthly fee, is it not?

        • +4

At the risk of messing it all up, and ending up just paying optus 800 for nothing, not worth it

          • @hoosier daddy: I had no issue cancelling the plan immediately and then picking up my S23+ preorder earlier in the year.

  • Got it just now. Got a text that the sim card is already activated

  • I will take the plan to replace my Vodafone and a new Pixel 8 Pro.

I have 2 years of bad reception with Vodafone when I take up the 2 years contract for $1K discount on my iPhone 13 in Apple.

Vodafone do give free international which I use.

  • just saw that this deal is available for S23 and iPhone
Has anyone tried the same thing with them and got handed the phone right away after signing up?

    • +1

This is for Pixel 8 Pro only, they don't even have a Pixel 8 deal which is what I'm looking for.

      • -2

They've pixel 8 deal $49/24mths and cancellation fee is $588

          • +1

@Techie4066: I saw a Pixel 8 deal for $49/24mth at HN this afternoon. I was focused on the Pixel 8 Pro, but you might want to check it out.

            • +1

              @RickyMoon: what store was that?

            • @RickyMoon: Thanks, too bad I'm not in Sydney now but will check out my local HN. Will still need to check out the cancellation fee though, if its still $828 and not something like $500 this P8P would be a better deal!

        • -1

          Where is this?

          • +2

            @JDKC: Sydney Broadway

            • @RickyMoon: Thanks!

Very interesting.. I actually bought my P8P from Broadway yesterday and asked if there was an option for the P8 and was told there wasn't.

              Did you speak with anyone?

              • @JDKC: I didn't ask the sales staff about it, but I did see a sign for the Optus Pixel 8 phone plan on the display stand. I think anyone who's interested should go and ask. I signed up for the Pixel 8P myself.

                • @RickyMoon: Might check it out again. Nothing there when I went and even asked about it and was told there was no plan offer like the P8P

                  • +2

@JDKC: Same experience here at another store. Asked specifically about availability of the Pixel 8 on a similar deal. The salesperson showed me on their internal marketing system that the Pixel 8 Pro deal explicitly states that there is no deal available for the Pixel 8.

So the Pixel 8 deal might exist only at the Sydney Broadway store.

  • Is there a way to delay the plan start date to the 12/10? No point having an activated plan without the phone…

    • +1

Someone posted that they put their account on temporary hold for a month, so it might be possible.

  • +14

Idea: before you cancel your plan, use the Optus app to 'donate' your data to charity. 100gb well used instead of lost.

    • -2

      What are you smoking son

    • Would they consider that a full use of the first month and charge you $69?

    • "Thanks for your interest in donating your data but you need at least 6Gb of data balance to make a donation"

      wtf? OK I tried..

  • What sort of Credit checks they do? I'm new in the country, does that mean I'm not eligible for this deal? Cheers!

    • +1

For credit check they'll need some sort of ID like a Drivers License, Medicare or a Passport. It's hard to say if you are eligible or not but better go in-store and ask.

    • +2

If you don't have history they the credit check will probably return a "New to the Bureau" response. Most retailers just accept that. It's usually only if you fail credit checks due to a poor score that they refuse you service

  • -6

Hey guys, I want to upgrade my Pixel 5 to the 8 Pro. How exactly can I manage to get this phone for $862.50? If someone could explain, that'd be great. Thanks!

    • +10

Go to a Havey Norman store and ask the staff to sign you up for the Pixel 8 Pro Optus $69 plan. If you want a 256GB you'll have to pay $100 on the spot. They'll need your ID (DL, Medicare, PP) to sign up. You'll get the new number once registered and the phone when it's in stock, most likely on the 12th. Cancel the Optus number after you pick up your phone by calling/online chat with Optus customer service. You'll get your final bill which should be around $862. Enjoy the phone.

      • Do we need to activate the sim prior to canceling the service?

        • +1

          They activate it almost immediately.

  • +2

Anyone know if this would work for a 256GB Pixel 8 (not the Pro)? I will assume the promo is only for the 8 Pro.. if no-one knows I'll try find out if I go in this weekend. While I'd love the Pro, the normal 8 is much better for one-handed use etc

    • Following!

  • Has anyone that cancelled received their invoice for cancellation fee? Didn't know if they require payment straight up or if they send the bill after a few days.

    • +2

The Optus rep I chatted to online said that it would come at the end of the first billing cycle, so in a months time.

  • This thread is a lifesaver. Will pop into hardly normal and check today. Anyone know what the cancellation for the 256gb vs the 512gb is? And what's the cash to HN for each?

    • Same cancellation fee, $100 extra or $300

  • The 512gb is the same fee for cancellation?! How is that legal. Thank you

    • +1

      You pay the difference

    • Because you're paying the difference upfront ($300).

  • Would the 512 also be on the 69 offer or higher?

    • $69 plan. You'll have to pay $300 on the spot for the 512 version.

      • Thank you. That's fine considering the damn phone is 1999

  • -1

If we get $69 plan do I get gift card too?

    • No.

      • thanks :) if I used same plan with telstra technically do I get phone for free ? if I kept plan for 2 year?

  • I went to HN yesterday to suss it out. Sales guy said I had to port my number across.

After that I went to Woolies to get a cheap prepaid sim as a burner.
Since I'm happy with Exetel, it would've been a pain to port my real number back (simcard gets mailed out -_-).

Went back to HN this morning and signed up. Paid $100 extra for the 256 model.

Sim is already activated and in my current phone.
Downloaded the Optus app and can confirm the "remaining balance" is $828.00

Will probably just cancel once I have the phone in my cold bare hands.

Just don't bloody say what you're upto and it'll be smooth sailing through the whole process.

    Simple really.

    • +6

You didn't have to port. Gerry just asked you to drop your dacks and you did

      • -2

        It was a $5 simcard. I don't care.

        • I know it was only $5 but it was an inconvenience to you. Next time come read this thread and make yourself familiar with the plan before you do things your way

          • +4

@Daddy Chill: Nahh, didn't want to make a big deal out of it and go with the flow.

I've read all the way through this thread. Thank you.

  • I'm on my way to sign up now. Do we have to port our number or can we do this trick with a new number?

    • +7

Don't port anything. Ask for a new number and upgrade to the 256GB for an extra $100 don't cheap out and don't mention OzSalty you will be in and out in no time

      • I'm planning to sign up x2 512gb. Is this okay?

        • It should be fine, you just pay the difference up front for the higher model.

        • It's fine

  • +1

Wowee this is a good deal regardless of whether you plan on cancelling. Does the optus plan have 5g?

  • Get 5 Pixel Pros. Resell brand new for $1200 which you'd think would be possible. Make over $1500. Profit!

Not saying I will but perfectly fine and perfectly legal.

    • Have you ever tried to resell a Google Pixel phone? They're not the same as an iPhone bud, good luck with that and welcome to losing money on your first business decision LOL

      • If not then Mobile Monster would probably give a similar price in a few weeks.

    • I don't think it's a bad idea. Even if you sold it for $1,000… It's still a profit

  • anyone considering porting from telstra over to optus to take up this deal? then a month later porting back over to telstra (via JB) to take advantage of a gift card offer?

    • I guess the $700 gift card covers a good chunk of the Optus payout cost. But then you still paying the same amount for 24 months.

      • +1

yeah I'm saying that if you were prepared to pay $828 for a phone, stick with an Optus plan for a few months (instead of Telstra) and then get an additional JB $700 gift card when signing up to a Telstra upfront plan. Playing the long game - phone plan costs don't really reduce…

        • Don't understand how your plan works? You get 2 phones then?

  • +1

I got the Pixel for my brother.

I do have a question for you harvey fanatics:

I just signed up to a deal at Harvey Norman for the iPhone 15 Pro 512gb with Optus

    I just want some clarity.

They had a $1200 gift card promo which got deducted from the value of the phone ($2399)

I then had to sign up to their $99 - 24 month plan.

What I'm confused about is that now there's the other half $1498 on the phone remaining, but then if you include the $99x24 this equals $2376 + (the already paid $1498) which is $3874…which is not worth it as retail is $2399

    Am I missing something?

    Thank you

    • +4

u should've understood what you were signing up for

    • +1

You pay $3874 for iPhone 15 Pro 512gb and 24 months of optus mobile service

    • +4

Sounds like you bought a $2400 phone and a $2376 over 2 year phone plan that comes with a $1200 voucher.

      What were you expecting?

  • Signed up earlier at my local HN.

Kept insisting that I had to port and couldn't sign up for a new number.

Kept insisting that I had to stay for 3 months or blah blah x.

Said head office is having a meeting tomorrow morning that will change all the rules.

Also tried to push me to buy 5 phones and resell them.

I knocked back all of these claims and just walked out with my one pre-order. Will cancel my Optus service now.

    • +2

What a flog. Contradiction saying have to port in but then pushing to buy 5 phones

    • +3

      Meeting on a Sunday? Lol

      • +4

Yeah, they didn't think that scare tactic through very well did they. Besides as others have pointed out, the contract lies with Optus not HN. Let them have their fantasy Sunday meeting all day long.

      • +2

The contract states that the maximum plan cancellation fee is as follows:

        $49 plan: $588
        $69 plan: $828
        $99 plan: $1188
If you sign the contract today, I believe they can only enforce the cancellation fee according to the terms of the contract.

    • I am in HN and almost finished. Do you not fear the phone will not be ready for you if you cancel your plan?
