    • You want to claim GST on an item that cost you $0?
GST is 10% of a purchase cost, so 10% of $0 is $0.

      • Well it will cost us $828 +/- $100 so not really $0.

        • The $828 payment is to Optus to cancel the mobile phone service for breaking contract that you agreed to and signed.

How are you going to justify that to claim TRS?

International travellers (including Australians) might be able to claim a GST (Goods and Services Tax) and WET (Wine Equalisation Tax) refund for some goods bought in Australia that you then take out of the country with you on a plane or ship.

          https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/touris…

          • @CodeXD: Yeah mate fair enough, I was also wondering if we can claim it against tax for work purposes.

          • -1

@CodeXD: Easy. Buying phone outright. In turn one claims on the $828 payment made to Optus. It is linked to the original phone receipt. If any ATO questions, you just show them. Simple.

  • I am current on Telstra 69 plan, but only pay 59.

So change to Optus at additional 10 per month for 24 months, total 240 for pixel 8 pro ?

And I can trade in my 1 months old pixel 7 ( cost me 169 and 2 years old pixel 6) at JB for 375 trade in value and 250 JB gift card.

Sound like very good plan. But I just love my pixel 7.

  • +1

I am also curious on what will happen to my credit rating on when they do the initial credit check and also afterwards when the plan is cancelled. Can someone please let us know your experience from last year on this?

  • +1

As much i like this deal. Can't fathom the sight of being with optus again on a contract. Maybe a free pixel 7a with pixel 8 deal could sway me but I'm really waiting for the next jbhifi deal that match the s23u with free watch combo next month

    • Is there a good chance of a decent jbhifi deal next month? I'm after either Pixel 8 or S23 Plus as this P8P is too large for me.

  • Thinking of getting this and actually keeping the plan lol, what's it like?

I'll be better off getting this, keeping the plan and buying the watch from Google as opposed to buying the phone from Google, using credit for the watch and keeping my existing Woolworths mobile plan.

It'll be cheaper over 2 years, I'll have a better phone plan and will only have to pay for the watch upfront (and get $150 google credit back)

  • Can't we say the Optus network is having issue in my area and is not giving me proper speed so i want to cancel this subscription?

    • Sure, if you pay the $800+ cancellation fee.

  • Is it even really worth cancelling, what plans are you going to use instead?

I worked out that if I did the cancellation thing and stayed on my current $30/month plan I'd probably save $108 over 24 months ($4.5/month) and my current plan would be much worse than the Optus plan. I guess this is ozbargain though and saving $4.50 a month is huge!

    • +1

I'm currently on a Catch plan that cost me $114 over 12 months. Depends how much data you use, what network you want to be on and how much you get out of it. I WFH and have wifi in the office so data isn't super important to me. So it's more like $600 over 2 years saved for me.

Before Woolworths cancelled their 10% off home deliveries with a contract, their mobile plan more than paid for itself for me.

      • Yeah, it makes sense if you're on one of those really cheap plans. I WFH mostly as well, so don't actually need a lot of data, but I want it to work properly when I need it, which is not really happening in the Melb CBD with Woolies at the moment. I have a second Woolworths plan for my son, so I'll still get the 10% off a monthly shop

    • +1

Lots of different circumstances and usage. I always grab a $300 Telstra 365 day kit when it's discounted on here - last year I got it for $225, which is $18.75 a month. It came with 200GB. Checking my usage today I have 30 days left on it, and have only used 63.4GB in the past year despite using my data for everything when I'm out and about and never using public wifi. Only data usage mitigation I've done is pre-download Netflix episodes onto my phone before going on trips, and all my music is locally stored in my phone. Apart from that I consume YT, Twitch, and social media videos willy nilly and honestly I'm surprised I've only used this much. Wish I could get half data for even cheaper, but I like the Telstra network.

    • I'm on the Lebara 360 Medium, I paid $210 for it last year and it works out to $17.50 a month which is a saving of $17 a month compared to the Optus plan ($408 over 24 months)

  • +6

I'm in no rush, I'm not walking into Harvey Norman TWICE 🤣🤣🤣

I will go in when the phone is released, and pick it up on the day.

    Pixel ain't gonna sell out.

I wish I had spare prepaid MasterCards to pay it off like last to save an extra $60.

  • Any ideas on the best way to get this deal if you can't get to a store before the 19th? I'm overseas till he 20th

  • -1

Any thoughts on best/cheapest way to use this deal to get a pixel 8 (not pro)

Eg. But the pro, sell it (how/where) for the best price and then but pixel 8 - for the cheapest price

  • I signed up and ported my number to this Optus plan (if only for the 5G). Will porting my number out again to another carrier count as cancellation and Optus will just send me a bill for $828? I don't want to lose my number that I kept for over 20 years now.

    • +4

Why not just sign up as a new number then just cancel it?

      • This was actually a question I have. I don't have a number a number to port, as I have a few months to go on contract. Is getting a new random number enough for purposes of this deal (then cancelling contract)?

        • +1

That's what everyone does in here, the sole purpose of getting the new Pixel 8 Pro at dirt cheap price on release day (compared to the current retail offerings/ trade-ins). Only thing you have to go through is the credit check hassles and Optus retaining your data.

  • As the phone is coming from HN, assuming it would be unlocked so when we cancel/port out no issues to non-optus carrier?

    • +1

HN would be retail. But most phones these days are unlocked, except for brands like Oppo still doing carrier versions, but they are mostly unlocked just probably loaded with carrier bloatware.

  • Just wondering - So for those who cancel the plan and pay $828, I assume the money goes to Optus. Then how much does HN get paid for selling one phone? And get paid from Optus? Does Google just gives out free phones for NH/Optus for promotion?

    • +1

That would be some sort of agreement between Optus and HN, like JBs doing deals with Telstra. But I think it was a gamble to hopefully new sign ups would stay on.

    • +4

Who cares how much Gerry Harvey gets paid. He's the reason Amazon and other international businesses got cripples in this country.

  • If the phone isnt in the contract, wouldnt you be able to cancel under the cooling off period with no fees

    • +5

Do you even need to discuss cancellation with HN? Once you have the phone in hand you're basically just on an Optus plan - you just cancel directly with them. Going by the comments on this thread you don't even need to wait for the phone, just cancel via Optus live chat and HN will give you the phone anyway.

      • +1

Yeah fair. I guess I'll go down that route

        • +8

OMG, you called an HN to discuss this when 100s of people have already placed their orders :(
This is what sometimes kills the deals

          • +5

@regenade: this! just don't say anything about cancelling.

    • +7

Why even bother calling them and entering into a discussion with them? They're retail workers on minimum wage and mostly are clueless. Just go into any HN, sign up and then cancel the plan through Optus once you received the phone.

Everything they told you is entirely mistaken.

  • +6

Honestly 128GB isn't much these days, 256GB will be standard soon

    Definitely worth $100 more.

    • +1

Have a 128gb phone, never run out of storage. If i do, Google cloud storage won't cost they extra 100 over the life of the phone.

Depends on how many videos you film, or how heavy you use the camera

  • +1

Damn, I've spent the last hour at the store and the rep is handing the phone back and forth between me and Optus to sign up for this phone plan. What a painful experience, I'm still here.

Asked for the critical information summary, said there's no link or print out he can give me. Roll eyes instead verbally just shouted it out.

    • +1

I had a similar experience. What should have been a 15-minute ordeal took over an hour because they had to call Optus to sign up via their offshore call centre.

      • welcome to Harvey Norman!

        • +8

Mates don't let mates shop at Harvey Norman unless it's to rip ole Gerry off like this deal.

          • +1

@hardcoreshilling: Nothing leaves Gerry's pocket he gets a mint on commission

          • @hardcoreshilling: I don't think Gerry is getting ripped off though… It'd be Google and Optus subsidising it. You really think Gerry is handing out these phones for free? lol

      • +1

Luckily as part of the sign up process there was an SMS I needed to hit accept. There it stated the cancellation clause being half of the remaining months clearly.

        • Do you have the wording of this SMS you can share

          • +2

@cacique: its a link sent to your sms and it states:

If you cancel your plan, cancellation fees will apply. Your cancellation fee will be half of your monthly access fee multiplied by months remaining in your minimum term. You will also need to pay all charges, inclusive of those outside of your plan inclusions (including for other services or accessories), which have been incurred up to the end of the payment cycle in which the service was cancelled, unless otherwise provided in our standard agreements and subject to consumer law rights.

save page as PDF when you are signing up for record keeping. It has at the bottom, You have successfully accepted the above Terms and Conditions - Thank you! Here is your reference number: XXXXXXXX

    • +1

I had very opposite experience. smooth sign up, very knowledgeable and kind rep

      • Same here.

      • which store?

        • +1

          Broadway Sydney

    • Isn't the phone out on the 12th?

  • +1

Does anyone know if it's possible to get this plan on a new number and then port my existing number to it later?

Currently using a Woolworth's esim and don't really want to mess around with it yet and risk not having a working phone today

Also, does anyone know the full details of the plan? Like is it uncapped 5G any other bonuses, etc? Can I get Optus Sport for $6.99?

It doesn't seem like their standard $69 plan and the CIS is vague

    • +1

      From my experience no

    • Yes, its possible. I got the plan on a new number. and temporarily got the new number suspended by optus for 1 month.

  • I've been planning to get a used iPhone 14 sometime, but this is really tempting. What are the chances of a similar offer happening with recent iPhone models?

I've currently got a Pixel 4XL and really liked it tbh. Main reason I'm looking to swap to an iPhone is to fit in with the rest of my tech (M1 iPad Pro + Macbook Air), plus I'm curious to finally see what all the hype has been about for the last 15 yrs aha.

    • +3

Similar deal for iPhones? Not likely. Why would Apple care about offering deals like this? They have enough loyalty and sheeple who will go out and drop $2k the same day the iPhone 15 releases.

      • Is this a deal from Google though? I assumed it was purely Optus + HN, but I guess that could make sense.

        • +2

Google is undoubtedly underwriting the deal as the manufacturer.

    • Go to HN website. iPhone 15 pro for $99 outright on a plan currently

      • +1

iPhone 15 Pro 128GB Device Offer on $99 (In store only):
Customers who sign up to a new Optus $99 SIM only plan in store at Harvey Norman, Domayne or Joyce Mayne during the offer period will also be eligible to purchase an iPhone 15 Pro 128GB device with a $1200 discount applied upfront to the cost of the device at point-of-sale.

iPhone 15 pro is $1,849, - $1,200 = $649 out of pocket plus cancellation fee is higher due to $99 plan

        Cancellation cost is 99 x 24 / 2 = $1,188. All that work to get $1,200 gift card for $1,188 lol

        • +2

So the total cost would be $1188+$649=$1837? Thanks for doing the math.

  • I've just scanned through the comments.

    My take is:
    - HN are employing FUD tactics to curb early cancellations (and we only get 1 credit check, not 2)
    - Our arrangement after purchase is with Optus, not HN.

    My question:
Is there a benefit to purchasing in-store vs online?

    • +2

AFAIK this is an in-store only offer.

Look at the last option here
      https://www.harveynorman.com.au/optus-byo

      • Thank you sir
"(In store only)" clears that up 🙂

I'll be getting the 256GB, so I assume the only difference is I pay $929 cancelation, or $100 up front in store? Either way I'll find out.

        • +2

it would still be $828 cancellation. For the extra $100, you pay to HN when you grab the phone after launch

          • +1

            @Bewater: Legend, thanks!
Now I don't have to talk to HN staff at all beyond ordering the phone 👍

  • -1

Would this stack with the 10% off Optus discount for Uber drivers?

  • Can I buy 5 and cancel plans all together on the same day? If so, it's time to change my whole family's phones.

    • I've bought 4, wish me luck

      • Let us know when you're done. Fingers crossed.

      • did u cancel?

        • I will cancel after I receive the phone.

      • Just curious, did you sign up to 4 new numbers simultaneously with same ID in the same store at same time?

        • +1

I did. The salesperson told me that I can sign up up to 5 new numbers.

          • @mommu: Cool, good to know thanks. And wouldn't can**** 4 numbers cause any problem (or) completely affect the credit score?

  • Do you get a SIM card when you sign up?

I'm thinking of keeping the plan, but am wondering how that will work with my existing phone until I get the P8P. Currently using an eSIM in a Pixel 5. If I port my number to the new plan I obviously still want to use my existing phone for now

    • they give u option of esim vs physical

      • Can I use the eSIM in my existing phone and switch to the P8P when I get it?

Probably easier to just get a physical I guess

        • I think so, that should be easy

          • @truebunny: Thanks!

Do you know if the plan has 5G? The information about the plan is very vague in the CIS. No mention of 5G

    • try again?

    • +2

Just churn away, and it will be cancelled…

      • means port out? is it possible to port out from postpaid to prepaid without a no objection from Optus?

        • Just port out away to other provider, that's all. Why would Optus object to you porting out? This is your own choice and when you port out it will double confirm with you that you need to understand there will be penalty for breaking the contract. Just acknowledge it. That's it. Wait for your final bill….

  • Now, is there the option to sign the plan at one store and get the phone picked up from another? I'm away from my local until next week and would rather get on this deal sooner than later

  • +2

for those with experience if i hang on a month or so would the $69/m still be available post release? anyone know what the difference may be?
