  • the $199 is cheap as and would do well as a Nas box of sorts

only 4 sata though, pretty sure it uses std. desktop ddr3 (ie. ECC not necessary)

    but here's the biggie… its socket 1156

    • Hello tonyjzx,

      It's using ECC Unregistered RAM.

      • Usually these can handle normal memory as long as its not combined with ecc

      • +5

i can probably tell you a heap about these as i used to work with them

they came out of the factory with unbuffered, unregistered ecc

but if you ditch the single module it comes with and replace it it plain desktop ddr3 it works fine

you may not even need to change settings in bios

        • +1

We have tested Apacer, Kingston & Hynix RAM modules on this server and it does NOT post.
We also did a variation of 2GB, 4GB & 8GB modules and it does NOT post.
So the compatibility this server has in regards to RAM is ECC Unregistered RAM.

tonyjzx can you please clarify what DDR3 RAM modules you have used?

        • Please respond…

    • +3

and would do well as a Nas box

if you don't mind a noisy NAS

      • actually according to IBM quick specs… it has the same rated noise levels as the Microserver

        48dB

it also has 6 sata ports if i read it correctly but only 4 hdd bays

it would make an ok nas box to be honest

      • -1

And big power bills… these are proper servers with power saving at the bottom of the list of priorities.

        • not really

it uses a pissy 350w psu which is the same as any cheapo PC but obviously higher quality

          its not a real server

        • "Not a real server"
Depends on what it's going to be used for.
No problem here if it's going to be used as a file/print server, web server , SQL Database and Email server or NAS.

As for the power supply remember this is an entry level server which does NOT require a high end power supply.

        • Hi OP,

I can see from the tech specs that the $199 version power supply is rated at 350W.

What i'm interested in is its efficiency - having it on all the time may be less of an issue if it's fairly efficient.

If you have the precise model details for the power supply that would be helpful.

  • What happened to all those hp microserver deals ? They seem to have vanished.

    • +6

hp were blowing them out and giving rebates back to resellers

then they realised most of ocau etc was buying 2 or 3 of them at a time

so hp decided to make some money for a change so no more cheap microservers

  • how do this compare to HP N40L?

    • +2

These are significantly faster but would also be louder, bulkier and look even stranger in a living room. N40L has a purpose as a micro-server, a little hard to compare.

I would probably go for the N40L as a HTPC and the IBM as a NAS given the larger chassis. No doubt the IBM is much faster and cheaper though.

    • and the n40l has removable hdd bays? ecc ram?

      • N40L comes with ECC RAM. As suggested here, you're best to swap it out for large, cheap, non-ECC RAM.

        • +3

It's best to have ECC ram, it's cheaper to have non-ECC RAM.

    • The micro servers also have hot swappable bays which would set you back 50 to 100 dollars if you bought third party ones to add to the ibm

      • My N40L has a label that says don't remove bays without powering down so not hot swap.

        • SATA+AHCI will allow for hot-swapping regardless and I believe on SATA power connectors there is a longer ground pin to allow for this but if they don't recommend, I wouldn't be doing it too often.

    • lol what?

      • +1

I believe this might be in reference to the $9 dell printer deal. It is a fairly common saying nowadays on ozbargain printer (and maybe even technlogy deals) to say "This is no $9 printer deal"

  • How about power consumption? Would these fare similar to the N40L ? I'm guessing it would take a bit more but would it have some good power conservation built in?…

    • Power supply on these is 350w. The N40L is 200w. My N40L pulls 50-60w when running with a couple of large hard drives.

Be interesting to know what these pull running as a NAS/torrent/usenet box.

  • IBM X3100 - 4253-42X
how many drive bays does this have?
    and pcie/ide?

and what would shipping be to 5000

    • It has 4 SATA hot-swap HDD bays.

Shipping to 5000 (SA) will be $49

  • google cache suggests it was previously with 16gb ram and now the ram has stripped out and sold it at a lower price and called a bargain. it is being compared to it's original price of $699 even though it's been gutted.

    • +3

to be fair, they were charging $445 with 16gb memory being the only difference

now in my part of the universe, $199 is a lot lower than $445 and who needs 16Gb with only a toy g6950 processor anyway???

and you should be able to buy crappy 2 x 2gb or 2 x 4Gb desktop memory for a $20-$30 and use that anyway….

      • -1

yeah, but the memory probably would have been ecc

and it is still extremely deceptive to comparing it to $699

    • +2

We're selling it as it is now mate.
      They we're $445 & $510 w/ 16GB RAM.
The RAM was offered as an upgrade and it was NOT stripped out.
      They come standard with 1GB (Pentium) & 2GB (i3)
      Just to clear things up.

  • this is tempting, can i just wack on some desktop ddr3 and OS to call it a desktop

    • You sure can!

    • +9

Balls, wacking may cause damage to your parts.

      • +4

        Go away jv.

        • +7

          Can't Copie ???

      • +2

especially if wacking on a desktop

        • -1

          ouch…

  • Don't forget guys these IBM servers are on display in our showroom.
So you're more than welcome to come in and check 'em out for further inspection :)

  • I have 2x4GB registered ECC ram. Any server that you are selling uses this type of memory?

    • Sorry we have attempted to use registered ECC RAM and it's not compatible.
Unfortunately these are the only two servers we have available.

  • If i order it now, when can expect the delivery? Going for holiday next Wednesday and wondering if i can get it before that.

    • Hey punky,
What was your Online Order Number?
I'll check it out for you.

      • Not yet, just wondering if i place the order today how long it takes to deliver to 3196?

        • Oh sorry!
If you place the order in today you will receive it Monday or Tuesday.
Just make sure you make the payment today as well by Direct Debit (so it should clear by tomorrow).

So yes you will get it before going on your holiday if you do it that way.

        • so it should clear by tomorrow

for most banks, that would have to be done by 5pm…

        • Or why not ask LFO to dispatch it later so you get it on your return? You won't be doing much with it on the eve of departure, will you?

  • Hi Rep order fails with following error,

"Australia Post shipping calculator failed, reason: The maximum weight of a parcel is 20 kg."

You are going to loose the business!

If you can fix it quick I will retry placing the order.

  • What is the max HDD capacity?

    • +1

      The linked specs say 4 x 1TB

      • cheers for that. Seems a bit low to be used as a DVR :(

        • Yeah, and I can't find any people who are reporting trying anything larger (can't see why larger disks wouldn't work though)

        • It uses the ICH10R chipset (very common on intel boards) supports upto 4tb fine, although you will run into issues above 2.2tb if being used as a boot drive.

Ive ordered one of these since i have a x3440 here spare so that + 16gb of ECC ram should be a pretty tidy server machine, certainly more powerful then a Microserver for processing.

  • According to my lookings, both processor models can do VT-x - so might be an OK (if somewhat larger) substitute for the N40L

  • Another quick question. Does anyone know if a Geovision GV1480 or two run on this? From specs it would, but just double checking.

    • Yes, it does support it.
