A used skillet… this def something i wouldn't buy second hand.

    • +3

      Why?

    • +5

This could actually be a positive if they have already seasoned it. Like buying a good second hand wok, you're buying it pre-seasoned.

      • -7

        You mean burnt.

        • There's a difference between season and burnt. The difference is basically application of oil.

          • +2

@boretentsu: How can you guarantee the previous owner seasoned or burnt it.

      • Lodge comes pre seasoned

    • Why? all my best cast iron cookware has all come from salvos.

  • +4

probably an unused return, if it was a 12inch one I'd buy it

    • +1

31 still available. Why are so many people returning it?

      • +1

8" cast iron does seem a little pointless to me.

    • +5

more likely some damaged box/stock or something happened in the warehouse so they have to offload all of the stuff and sell it as is (these will be brand new).

if the stock is from a certain seller, they get fully reimbursed for the issue.

  • Will this fit a steak?

    • +17

      Sure. An 8" steak.

    • +3

Just make sure you have good exhaust in your kitchen or at least air flow. I can't use our cast iron indoors for meat as it fills the house with smoke. I do use it outdoors.

Stupid rental house kitchen with no exhaust.

    • +1

Update: fits an Aldi scotch fillet perfectly

      • What about a Woolies steak?

  • Damn you all, I had this in my cart but it was gone by the time I went to checkout!

    • Click used and new on the right side

      • I do that, but get an error when trying to add it to the cart now. Added before Ok, but said item unavailable when checking out.

        • As a test I just went ahead and bought another one after your comment above. And cancelled it.

          • +1

@Lucille Bluth: And now it's working again. NFI what Amazon are doing for me.

            • @noisymime: I can add 10 of the used like new ones and I am on checkout screen now and able to pay

  • Thanks, OP. Bought one!

Had a look through amazon warehouse, if someone is after solidteknics carbon steel pan, there are 4 available for $77, very good price

    • +1

Thank you! Got the last one.

      • If it's your first one, make sure you report back and let us know how you go with it. Great price for an introduction to what is a fantastic - if sometimes pricey - range…

        • +1

Hey it’s not my first. I have about 8 solidteknics including noni. I make pancakes in it which shows how it can become non stick with the proper seasoning instructions.

          • @Sometingwong: Forgiveness please - I didn't mean to preach to the choir.

Haven't made the leap to Noni yet, chiefly since I make so few wet dishes. Do you use it much and if so, how do you find it?

            • +1

@UncleRico: I have the 10lt deepa noni with the lid. Also a 18cm noni pan. Actually utilise them less than my wrought iron ones. My fav is 23cm quenched. I used to use the nonis for acidic foods but honestly I cook acidic on the wrought iron ones and just re season once which makes it non stick again. I’d save the money and grab wrought iron ones any day.

    • F@aaaak missed it

Got one last week when it first went up at $63. (Sorry for not posting it as a deal but there was only half a dozen in stock). It arrived in mint condition with retail packaging but oddly, was date stamped 2017.

Anyhow, just posting to say that it arrived and is awesome. It’s high Sauteusse style sides mean the cooking area is a bit smaller than the advertised 9” but once seasoned it will be an amazing piece for one man meals like steak, bacon and eggs or three egg omelettes.

Since buying my Aus-ion 30cm and 26cm pans, I’ve not touched my lodge pans which are double the weight. New buyers will love it. Another vote for Solidteknics…

      • +1

That's an absolute steal. They're probably trying to clear out old stock, doubt many people who buy solidteknic would buy it off Amazon.
Best carbon steel skillet I've used to date

        • Aint it just!

From memory the stampings mention SolidTeknics but the cardboard insert references another name - AusFonte, I think, suggesting the timeline for these long-hidden skillets may line up to around the time they rebranded to Aus-Ion from AusFonte. I don't know what, if anything, changed with the manufacturing at the time of the namechange - but it seems identical in construction to the other Satin pan I have.

To be honest, my two Satins (30cm and this 22cm Sauteuse) now look near enough identical to my two Quenched (28cm and 26cm dual handle Lightning) pans and they are the only pans/skillets I really use these days. I've got a gap in my collection for a 24cm pancake griddle, but that's already more than I reeally need. Lately I do virtually 90% of my cooking in 30cm pan, but I think this latest one will be perfect for one-man scrambled eggs and dining or solo steaks.

          • +1

@UncleRico: AusFonte was their cast iron line, they stopped producing them in 2017 and switch to producing Aus-Ion and noni the carbon steel and stainless steel line. It's a piece of history if you have one of those.
I never liked the satin finish, thought it made it harder to season than the raw, quenched seems like a properly season pan which would be good for people new to carbon steel.

            • @ozlurker: I'll have to check when I get home, but I'm sure the cardboard insert, if not the pan, had AusFonte printed on it, even though it's definitely wrought iron in the same style as Aus-Ion rather than cast.

I didn't notice much difference between the original Satin and subsequent Quenched pans when it came to seasoning, but that could just be because I'd been using the Satin 30cm for so long that it had built up a rock solid seasoning prior to receiving the Quenched updates. I'll see how long it takes me to come to terms with my new Satin Sauteuse and build up a slick coating before reviewing.

One thing I will say is that the 2.5mm Lightning range (purchased from Kickstarter campaign a year ago) anecdotally conduct and retain heat every bit as well as either the 3mm original or any of my Lodge pans which have twice the heft. i see they've since reduced the thickness of their lightning range to 2mm which I'd be a bit concerned about warping in anything bigger than 26cm, but the reduced weight makes them a godsend for older or female users.

              • @UncleRico: Just popping back to correct my early comments re; branding on these Aus-Ion pans as just fire-saled on Amazon.

They don't actually have any AusFonte branding on them. They still have the current Aus-Ion markings and label, right down to the inset map of Australia in the handle - albeit with a tacky looking arrow and typing announcing "Made Here", alongside a date stamp of 01/06/2017.

What is different from the current range, is that there is no mention of the SolidTeknics brand. Instead, the marketing blurb that comes with them refers to New Metro and the website www.newmetrodesign.com which no longer contains any reference to these pans. Presumably this was part of the early branding which late morphed into SolidTeknics.

                So there you go…

    • Thought I got the second last one but cancelled by Amazon due to unavailability! Deeply saddening

  • +1

I know that Lodge are meant to be the beez kneez but what's the difference between this and say this

    • +5

Ones the beez kneez the other is the wazpz azz

    • Lodge is made in USA

    • +4

Lodge aren’t the “beez kneez”, at least this version isn’t, they’re more or less entry level American made pans.

  • These any good for deal with crocs in your backyard? Asking for a friend.

  • I ordered a Lodge "used like new" cast iron grill plate for about half the rrp on Amazon about a month ago. It came new in packaging and is amazing to put across two hot plates!
