Samsung Viewfinity S9 27" 5K monitor (S90PC) $1724 + Delivery ($0 C&C/In-Store) @ Harvey Norman

160

The Samsung 5K (5120x2880) Monitor is down to $1,724 at our favourite retailer, Harvey Norman. Previous low is $1798.

Not the cheapest monitor for the money, and certainly not for gaming. 60Hz, no local dimming, no VRR. But fantastic for use as a retina display for productivity, and for video editing etc.

Try price matching at JB if you want to really show appreciation to old mate Gerry :)

Unfortunately not available on Samsung EPP yet

  • How good it is compare to the Apple Studio Display

    • Has a great colour gamut, and way better compatibility with Windows if you want to use it across multiple devices

IIRC its the same panel. Here's a review from an Apple perspective: https://sixcolors.com/post/2023/09/review-27-inch-samsung-vi…

      • It’s not the same panel. Apple’s is made by LG, this is made by BOE. But they’re very, very similar.

The biggest difference is the matte coating, and how you feel about that.

  • Too expensive? And only 60hz

You would think so, but there are very few 5k monitors and compared to the Apple Studio Display it's a bargain.

      • Using 4k at 144hz. Cannot use 60hz now …

        • Which screen? Looking for a good 27/28 4K high refresh rate screen

        • +1

cool man really happy for you

  • That's a lot of pixels

  • Very tempted to price match at JB and use the 15% off ultimate gift cards to pay.

My end game is still a mini-LED 32” 8K display, but this might tide me over.

  • Damn, Harvey Norman are great retailers and experts in everything

This Samsung model was AWOL and unpriced for a long time, so I ended up buying a Kuycon 5K 27" for around $1100 from Taobao. A stressful buy for a non-chinese speaker, but I got there in the end (and somehow avoided GST on the import too). The Kuycon is great so far, and its build quality inspires confidence. So it's another cheaper option, if you're brave enough. Certainly a niche product category still, going by the pricing on these things!

    • Hi @mholling
How exactly did you go doing that. I tried to get one off click clack but they won't ship to Australia. "Unfortunately, we regret to inform you we do not have the plan to sell the Kuycon monitor in Australia for the time at this moment. Our priority is to ensure that our customers receive top-quality shipping experiences and customer services, which is why we are focusing on perfecting our operations before expanding."
I made a 5K screen from an iMac display and it's so nice but the Studio Display and the S90PC are a bit rich for me.

You need an account on taobao.com, which is Chinese, so browse it in Chrome with language translation enabled. The link I bought from is https://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?id=694235332925 (tmall is part of Taobao). Choose "Official direct mail - sea shipping" otherwise air freight will be very expensive. (Most sellers don't offer direct mail, you have to use consolidated shipping, which is a whole extra step, but luckily direct mail is available on this listing.) I had to sign authority for an import agent to handle GST (cost > $1000) but thankfully it didn't eventuate. The whole language translation thing is pretty daunting; approach with caution unless you're adventurous! And it's risky from a warranty/after-sales-service perspective, since the sellers are really only set up to service the Chinese market, not overseas. But in my case it worked out fine.

        • Thank you, much appreciated. I shall investigate.

  • Seems like about the price it should be TBH. At the retail launch price it made no sense over the studio display really.

    • It's the only realistic 5K option for people who use Windows or both Windows and Mac. The Studio display doesn't offer any adjustments at all through Windows and lacks DP connectivity as well
