120

Samsung monitor released last month now on sale for $500 off.

Been waiting for this monitor since it was announced in January. It's now $700 cheaper than the base model Apple Studio Display and $1300 cheaper than the Apple Studio Display with height-adjustable stand.

You cant compare to a Apple Studio. I have one of this model (earlier one) and the colour reproduction just crap. The built quality is so plastic and cheap.
You get what you paid for.

That's not what I've been hearing from early reviews like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4GCk2DPesc

The previous model, I'm guessing the 32" 4K Smart Monitor M8, is a very different panel – it's VA (this one is IPS) & much lower pixel density: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/samsung/smart-monitor…

Maybe so, but we will have to wait & see. As for the reviews, they can’t be more trustworthy than your own experience. I bought the m8 based on “good reviews” like this too.
The built quality is (from the pics) is identical to the m8, which is terrible when you compare to Apple Studio.

      • Thanks for the video - the comparison is like cheese-and-chalk! Shame that the Apple Studio Display is $2500 in Australia (before discounts).

mhmm, but just because the last monitor you had didn't have the best colour reproduction doesn't necessarily mean this which is exactly made to try to persuade Apple users or anyone looking for a 5K colour accurate monitor won't have a better colour reproduction.

Ofc build quality isn't as high as Apple full alu build, but I'd rather have my monitor $700 cheaper than have a full Alu expensive monitor which I won't be frequently touching. You're supposed to use the screen not touch and feel the body of the monitor. But I do get the Appeal, full alu constructed monitor (I have owned 2 of these before base/vesa models) do feel nice to the touch during the initial setup and that's about it. If you're in a studio and your setup is the main foucs then sure, go ahead but at $700 that's a hard $$ to swallow.

Anyone know what the return sitution is like for HN, would like to try one of these. My C2 is still kicking great, and is probably one of the best monitors I have owned.

      • For me, the dealbreaker with the Studio Display was lack of proper Windows or multi-monitor support. It's absolutely gorgeous though

        • Yep exactly, it worked well with my Mac and that was about it, couldn't change brightness on my PC. Had to make a preset on the mac and carry it over when I had to use it with my PC.

And no doubt, it's a stunning display but for the price it was just too hard to keep around. OLEDs look way better than the Studio Display, but I have heard from web designers, editors, that do love the studio display as they swear by how accurate it is compared to their mac.

Now if the nex gen they bring Mini LED like their MBP14/16 Macs, height adjustment to the base model, a better camera or no camera at all maybe then I'll give them another go. I'd rather have them not include speaker/ camera and reduce the price.

      • I’m just saying. You need to research carefully before spending $1.8K only to find out it isnt as good as you thought it would. For someone who use it for editing, the quality difference is clear.

      • Also idk what the return policy is for HN online orders, but I pulled the trigger today with a JB Hi-Fi price match, since they're doing only $300 off: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/798466

Nice one, and looks like they have stock at my local store. Might go today and get it, Hmm time to do a deep research on it,

You bought a less than ideal panel type for your needs. Can't really blame Samsung for your lack of research. maybe check the specs first or buy/rent a colour calibration tool. Samsung do have crappy build quality tho but it's not going to break and you're not constantly stroking your aluminum apple products right?

  • i assume this is not meant for gaming, and you would need a rtx 4090 to game reasonably well on 5K?

    • +2

The primary benefit of 5K is having a proper Retina resolution.

It would be stupid to get one for gaming, you would be much better off with a 27" HRR 4K.

    • Benefit of 5K is much more towards the productivity and media production side (e.g. editing a 4K video with preview in 4K, and having a timeline and toolbars still visible. Or for coding/spreadsheets where the extra vertical space is a bonus. No benefit for gaming, and this monitor lacks any form of VRR as well.

  • Thanks to this post, I just discovered the Luna Display dongle so I can use my 2017 5k retina imac as a monitor!
