      Ozbargained??

  • +2

I cannot get the website to work. Just asks for my email address, then bombs out to a server error

  • Got one, can't find much info about it, but for $20 it's worth a try

ALDI are selling important Stella for $30. For the sake of a dollar, a bit of movement, and some fuel - it's a far superior beer.

    • +10

imported, not important. well to me it is important, Stella is great!

    • Much as I love Stella, I ain't tried this one yet. Reason enough to make it a buy.

    • +3

      what, beer at ALDI ?

      • +3

        Vic only,

my scottish co-worker informs me that back in the UK Stella is also known as "wife-basher"

        • +2

Yep, it is. And they love Fosters there too. Funny how being over the other side of the world can make the grass seem greener/blurier

        • Wife Beater

And it really annoyed the brewers. They were busy trying to create an air of a 'premium brand' - "reassuringly expensive" - and everyone was calling it wifebeater.

    past the best before?

    • Who knows. Are you nervous?

  • +1

A highly-regarded, full strength beer that I look forward to trying, delivered for less than $30? You kidding me? This is a great freaking deal. Big up yourself. Champion effort.

    • +1

up here in QLD (my brother from Vic had never heard of it) they have a "clearskin beer".

it's brewed by Hite brewery in Korea. it's full strength and $30 a carton. it's a very nice beer IMHO.

They also sell a mid strength which is quite reasonable in taste and can be had at 2 cartons for $52 (cheapest i'e seen).

      • +1

you can find the Korean "cleanskins" at coles liquorland from time to time with the $30 price tag in Melb. My local in brunswick regularly stocks it. we've found the taste is variable, some are more 'creamy' than others, but I agree it's a solid beer and better than many $40 slabs

  • $9 delivery to Perth too.

  • +1

Best deal I have seen on here in ages!

$29 delivered for full strength beer is a great bargain.

I wish there were more sales on beer - there is bugger all competition in my area with all the independent bottleshops being continuously bought up by the big chains.

  • -7

Full strength my ass (4.8% is water). More plastic lager. If you want a real beer go try Coopers Best Extra Stout. You do know that this beer is around a buck a bottle in every other country except here:

    http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/cobra/4936/

    • Don't necessarily agree with what he said, but gotta hand it to him, Coopers is a solid choice brah

  • Where is it brewed? India?

    • yes, India.

  • +2

    I wouldn't touch it.
The "awards" are like on cheap wine bottles where they run their own awards with their own products as the only entrants, so they can say "Gold medal winner"!
Cobra is run by Coors UK. It's a generic, watery lager, not unlike Melbourne Bitter.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobra_Beer
You get what you pay for. Being cheap doesn't make up for poor taste. Mind you, if your idea of good wine is a $6 bottle of Queen Adelaide, and you say things like "it's good because it's cheap," then this is the beer for you.
If you want a flavoursome good mass-market beer, try James Squire Golden Ale or Coopers Pale Ale instead.

A cold Melbourne Bitter on a hot summer day can be absolutely perfect at times.

Well, except for pretentious w@nkers I guess. Although the hipster crowd are all over it these days as well.

I'm torn. Might go have a Melbourne to calm me down.

      • I think the idea of a "hipster" is lost on you. They would be the ones that would drink Melbourne Bitter as an ironic statement.

And not liking something because you find it inferior does not make you pretentious. Harping on about how much better of a person you are because of your selective tastes does.

    • +4

      "it's good because it's cheap,"

Is as nonsensical as "It's good because it's expensive"

Stick with "It's good because I like it" and you won't go far wrong…… :-)

    • Cobra is a known and recognised brand.

It's much beloved of Indian Restaurants, both because it's a lager and therefore doesn't have a strong flavour (in common with most Oz beers), and because this one is specifically brewed to not be too gassy - so you can drink with a meal without getting bloated. That means the restaurant can sell you more food.

Superior to 80-90% of Oz beers I'd say. $29 is a good price.

Cobra is a known and recognised brand.

Not in Australia… I'd never heard of them until this post.

Superior to 80-90% of Oz beers

You're obviously drinking the wrong beers…

specifically brewed to not be too gassy

How do they carbonate during brewing? I always thought they carbonate after brewing…

        • +3

World is bigger than Australia - and they are definitely known in, say, the UK.

          http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/drinks/cobra/reviews/

As for taste, well that's a personal matter. But since I've drunk Cobra AND Oz beers, I'd say I'm probably better placed to offer an opinion?

  • Its A$25.00 now. Still not a bad price for a carton of Indian beer..i think???

    • yer $25 now

    • $25.99

Meh..I was going to bother but seeing as they keep putting the price up..nah..might as well just go to my local.

Looks like they made a mistake when half pricing it…they are saying it's 59.99 so half price is $30. This means the $20 was possibly a pricing error?

  • +1

It's made from bits of real cobra, so you know it's good :)

    • like authentic mexican tequila with worm? awesomely good.

    • +1

      It's quite pungent.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time, it works every time.

  • +2

was going to buy, but price already gone up $6, so decided not to

  • Bought at 6am for 20 dollars :) postage to GC $9

  • +1

From their website,"The world's most celebrated beer" …."Cobra beers are also one of the most highly awarded."

    dubious look

I'm into marketing speak as much as the next fella but me thinks this is trying to make it be perceived as something it really isn't….loads of awards = great tasting beer right?

I'd suspect they're the equivalent of the 'Participation Ribbon' that you got at school for just dipping your toe in the pool at the school swimming carnival.

Sounds from it's wikipedia page that the company has had a LOT of financial problems and been bought out a few times. I'd be very surprised if this was anything more than a very, very average tasting beer but worst case scenario you can take it to a mate's place/BBQ and drink his decent ones instead!!!! ;-)

    • +2

."Cobra beers are also one of the most highly awarded."

just like Ozbargain won the Altomic award for "best website font for 13-15 year olds with stomach ulcers"

  • BEWARE the total price!! I checked it out, ordered a carton for $25.99, they charge $9 delivery, but the total price came to $36.99 - They added $2 somewhere without saying where. Sneaky bastards, I cancelled my order!

    • +3

$2 donation for a worthwhile reason. there should be a box to tick somewhere saying "no thank you"

      • There is when you go through the checkout..but it is easy to miss. I only found it once I hit submit.

  • Cobra is a very nice beer. I like that its not too fizzy, makes it seem smoother and is much easier to drink! just bought 2. thnx OP :)

  • Anyone know what the delivery time is like for these guys? (my money went through 20/9/12)

A whole lotta beer for 27°C on Thursday would be simply splendid.

    • received mine today, though money went through on the 18th. if you created an account you should be able to track your order…

      • True, true. Dno why I didn't think of that. Anyway - I just received my order too! Interesting that they come in 4-packs.

  • Recieved mine today, even though I wasn't home at the time and when doing the delivery the instructions were 'to leave in carport' but was told by Aus Post that they couldn't do that as it needed a signature..

Not a 'bad' beer overall, took a little getting use to. On to my 3rd now and it's actually growing on me, my dad is coming up tomorrow and I think he'll like this, so might give him a 4-pack of it or something to take home, see how we go.

What do other people think of it?

    • Overall for the price it's nothing to complain about…Would I get it again? No.

  • I got mine, drank around 11 bottles so far with some friends

Not a lot of carbonation, very smooth, but lacking flavour wise. Very inoffensive beer. Did go well with Indian food like the website suggested, but in the way water goes well with food, i.e. Not a true marriage of flavours such as Aussie Shiraz and steak or Pinot Noir and Truffles

  • Its old beer! I received mine and the expiry is 22 October. Its about to go out of date! There was no mention of this in the ad.

    • Hey, you're right. My date is 21/10/12. I've been enjoying the beer - but I probably wouldn't have bought if I knew it was quite so near it's expiry(/best before?) date. Reading up on beer expiry dates, it seems it often doesn't matter; but it depends on the ingredients, brewing process, bottle (glass), handling/storage etc. I don't know much about Cobra but I'd be a bit dubious of it (hence reluctant to buy).

I'm gonna keep enjoying it anyway.

    • Damn it, my beer is expired…. Not so special after all… Damn you getwinesdirect.com

  • Just ordered, thanks
