Crazy price. Wishing now I hadn't gone the cheap 11400 back in 2021
I need x3d ðŸ˜
Need? 🤔 Only $183 more - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09VCJ2SHD/?th=1
Worth it for the extra cost?
If it gets to 399 ill bite my 5600x is struggling lol
My 1700 is hanging on for dear life.
@filmer: Brooo hahahah upgrade already
@Jasonio I grabbed one from ComputerAlliance for $480 (linked in that deals comments) to upgrade my 5600X.
Made a huge difference, worth every dollar
Lmao I just upgraded from a 4790K to a 5600X

Here's a video by hardware unboxed comparing 6 cores to 8 cores (5600 Vs 5700x) for multitasking
I run a 5600x with a 4090. If you have a specific workload that needs more cores then sure. I have GPU intensive workloads and I can still game and render with a 4090 and 5600x if I really want to. This little beast CPU will get it done if you don't have 10000 things open pointlessly occupying the CPU.
@Zoroaster: Ye pretty happy with my upgrade, went all second hand stuff and it came out to 750 for the platform upgrade + video card.
I have this CPU and primarily use it for gaming.
I took this screenshot earlier today of it crunching away at a file compression job - https://i.imgur.com/XA4lHLD.png
And this screenshot is of it playing Fallout 4 with over 600 mods installed - https://i.imgur.com/7Ig8yNn.png
As you can see in the screenshot, it chomps away on all 16 threads no problem.
It is a decent allrounder CPU. As a gamer, I'd rather have the 5800X3D, but that CPU didn't exist when I was buying (and is about $200 more on Ozbargain today). At this price, the 5800X is a steal.
You'll need to buy a cooler. 5800X is CPU only. So, budget that in.
If you're still on the am4 platform and just want to upgrade yeah.
but if you're going for a new build a 7600 is straight up a better buy or better yet 7500f in a prebuilt or otherwise.
Oh, absolutely. The 5800X is for people who want to upgrade their AM4 platform and are price conscious.
Ideally, we'd all buy the 5800X3D, but everyone knows it's the pinnacle of the AM4 CPUs, so the demand stays high. This older 5800X CPU gets overlooked in favour of the newer variant, which is why it's much better value in $ per compute.
Depends on use case. For a new gaming rig, etc, sure. But if you have DDR4 ram and PSU/Case sitting around, etc, you can easily grab yourself a great B550M that supports ECC ram for $150, and a 5600 for under $190, or this, and it'll make a great upgrade or new Unraid server / docker machine / media server (no you don't need intel quicksync), VM machine, etc. I already have a 5800X3D, but acquired more AM4 to replace old pfsense/Optiplex server builds.
I really don't think fallout 4 benefits from more cores. Seems to be using your fastest 2. Games utilising a lot of cores takes really intense work on the development side. Atleast a year ago when I was up to date on this knowledge, you'd be lucky to find a game that effectively used more than 4 cores. They just want a few very fast cores.
Vanilla Fallout 4, I can't speak to, but modded Fallout 4 uses all 8 of my cores. I have a 2nd monitor that permanently displays all 16 threads (and GPU, SSD, etc). It makes it easy to notice system load changes.
If you look at the Fallout 4 graphs, do you see how the last 10 seconds of all 16 threads have pretty much no load on them? That's because I'd alt-tabbed out of the game to take the screenshot. Almost all of the CPU load over those cores is from the game. It isn't background processes etc. otherwise the loads wouldn't have evaporated when I alt-tabbed out. https://i.imgur.com/7Ig8yNn.png
What's a good and cost effective cooler for this?
Thermalright Phantom Sprit is a steal at $52.90, if it fits your setup.
You mean the Peerless Assassin, right? Get the one without all the goofy RGB shite.
https://www.amazon.com.au/Thermalright-Peerless-Aluminium-Te…
Gamers Nexus love's it.
Those Thermalright heat sinks are all pretty much the same. RGB or not, still great value. Thermalright keep releasing fantastic heat sinks, for the price, in competition with themselves.
@Stphen: Pretty much. A fraction of the price I used to pay for Noctua. My Peerless Assassin keeps my 5800X3D so cool i didn't even have to do any of that undervolting stuff. Have always liked Thermalright. Had a Silverarrow back in the day.
Subjectivity about LEDs aside, the Phantom Spirit is the superior HSF.
And can be had in a led free version as well.
@UncleRico: Difference can't be too much if they're the same price (I see the RRP is slighty higher). Cbf looking at benchmarks, though. But good to know there is another option at that pricepoint. If you can get PS without RGB at same pricepoint, go for it. The actual real world difference between the two will be negligible.
@Shootinputin89: you can probably just turn off the rgb.
Peerless Assassin is an insanely good choice, make sure its going to clear your RAM though. Fills out your case nicely also.
@Jakeo: Yeah, in typical Ozbargain fashion my initial post was me assuming the PS was just a PA with RGB. But looking into it, I see it has slightly better cooling, and is little lower and fans run at a little less RPM. So that is awesome. Both are great choices.
As for PA (and PS?), it has easy to install and remove fans, so I was easily able to install them and position them above the ram slots. There is a good bit of leeway for how you position the fan vertically so it works with ram heatsinks. Here are some pics of mine:
If you look closely, you'll see I installed it the wrong way (2 boxes should be towards the ram), so ram clearance is much more than that usually. Will get around to fixing it. Hasn't impacted cooling that I've seen, lol
My one with 5800X3D is in a Lian Li PC-P80N, so case clearance was never an issue. But I've included a pic of one in my partners PC, which is a Lancool 1. You might have issues in some mATX cases, but ATX should be fine all round.
@Shootinputin89: it looks like you have a single front intake fan, and then 1 x rear exhaust + 2 x top exhaust. you are probably creating negative air pressure inside your case and as a result introducing more dust than positive air pressure. also having top exhaust fans is not always a good idea with a dual tower air cooler, because it takes cool air away from the cpu cooler. consider moving the two top fans as front intake.
@povogamer: Hey? I have 3 x 14cm front intakes. My cooling fine. It's a Lian Li PC-P80N. Trust me, cooling never has been an issue. The P-80N has 3x14cm front intakes, 2 top exhaust, and 1 12cm rear exhaust. My P80B has the same, but only a single top exhaust. Been running the B since 2008, and the N since 2011, they are my babies. Also, the front intakes pull air into the entire front of the case, they're housed in a door with a dust filter.
@Shootinputin89: ah, that final pic in your imgur I guess is your partner's PC. my bad
@povogamer: Ah yup, yeah bud, that's my partners Lian Li Lancool I, was just showing that the Peerless fits inside normal size cases. Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of that Lancool, the whole move to mesh (the entire top is just mesh), is not grooving with me. She only has a 3600 in there right now so not too worried about getting the best out of cooling.
edit A closer look at the PC-P80's fans (okay, well for the Noctua fans I put in the 2008 case in 2020 - so ignore the fan cables (thinking about installing some of those Lian Li fans that join together to reduce cables), the N only has one cable coming out the door panel) here: https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/comments/tyshvp/the_twin_li…
Great price and great cooler. Another vote for the Phantom Spirit.
Beats the legendary bang for buck Peerless Assassin in comparison reviews due mainly to the extra heat pipe. My non-LED Phantom Spirit cools my 5700x almost as well (temp and noise wise) as my Dark Rock 4 which is twice the size and price…
https://www.amazon.com.au/Thermalright-BA120-Cooler-TL-C12C-… this would already be plenty
Holy… Mine's 5800x is doubling this a few years ago.
Apparently for gaming it offers no real improvement unless it's the x3d model
You'd get this if you needed the extra cores. UnRaid server or the like.
What would be better for a NAS doing CPU transcoding to x265? This or the X3D version? It's running a 3600X at the moment, and boy does it take its time.
Pretty sure all AMD is crap for transcoding, Quick-sync enabled Intel chips are the way to go
I have Ryzen system already though. Not going to invest in a complete new build just for my NAS.
You should just get an Nvidia graphics card to speed up transcoding with NVENC
https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/11ih0gs/plex_hardware…
scroll down to the 'iGPU vs GPU Hardware Transcoding' section for information on how it works
It could be slow because you're using software transcoding, which is relying on CPU to do everything (not optimal).
To directly answer your question the 3D cache won't do much for a transcode, 5800x or even 5900x are much better buys.
I would like 3D haha
Nice price. Wattage would be the deciding factor for some i’d assume.
5700X exists for that reason. 65W TDP, 10-20C cooler, 95% performance.
💯
Worthy upgrade from 3700x to play latest games?
Yes. Zen 3 was a significant jump in gaming.
Check some benchmarks to see if there are differences between them. Unless the games you play are cpu limited won’t be much of a difference
Pulled the trigger to upgrade my 3700x. Was waiting for the x3d to drop below 400 but i doubt that will happen anytime soon.
I have had this cpu for over a year now. As others have mentioned not the best out there for gaming. Plus this cpu runs HOT and is power hungry (not ideal now with rising energy costs)
I would only consider or upgrade if you need the extra oomph for multi threaded workloads
Got R 7 2700 worth upgrade for video editing? Adobe apps
I went from a 1700 to 3700 and it made a big difference. Should be similar for you
Just bought a 5600 for $186. Runs really smooth, but fan is a bit noisy.
So fix it dear Liza…
For gaming, there is only few % fps difference between 5600, 5600x, 5700x and 5800x. I won’t get 5800x for gaming as it is more power hungry, runs hotter. Except you also need extra cores for productivity.
Very good price. Lowest I can see from an Aussie retailer is $359.00
