Dame ill be at my local Coles first thing tomorrow thanks op .

    • +10

      Sir I'll be at mine!

    • -1

Who is this "Dame ill", and why will she be at your local Coles?

  • Do they really take 60mins to cook??

    • +6

I cook mine in air fryer for 35 -40 mins at 195 deg never had a problem.

      • +1

I do them about 180 in a glass bowl type air fryer (halogen oven), but yeah about 30-35 minutes.

        • +3

Yes… this. The real air fryer.

          • +3

@xsmax: Paid $5 for a New boxed one, at an Opp shop in Albion Park NSW… My brother took a double take of shock, at the price.
I said to him, Robert, Once OZ Bargain get under your skin, you can just feel the steal.

          • +2

@greatlamp: It is true that teflon starts disintegrating at high temperatures, but that temperature is around 260 degrees celcius. I don't think airfryers can go up to 260.

        • But, but, pizza! No browning of the cheese?

Actually I'll have to try pizza in it one day. Stone in first, pizza 20 minutes later…

    • +5

that electric bill might as well buy it from kfc tuesday special

  • +5

Too hot for me and I'm not looking in a mirror!

  • +2

    What's so good about it?

    • -1

      yummy

    • +3

Always comes out super crunchy and delicious.

  • +2

Incoming comments about them being too salty but I love these.

    • +1

I finally got to try the hottest one of these and I don't think either type is too salty. No more so than KFC anyway. Maybe their machinery isn't consistent.

  • Chicken… Delicious…

  • Which ones are the hot ones Nashville or Louisiana ?

    • +2

      Nashville are the hot ones

    • +7

      Nashville = Hot and Spicy
      Louisiana = Original Recipe

    • +2

Thanks Guy's Louisiana it is :)

  • Got 4 packets today :D

  • +1

    Are these good?

    • +12

if you live in ACT northside, No.

      Southside or anywhere else, Yes

      • +2

        I don't get it..

        • +43

Don’t touch my half price tegel’s

          • +1

            @XCOM v2: Oh I see. 😆

Might have to pick some up from Belco tomorrow and stock up the freezer.

      • But your OzB location is in Adelaide hmmm

        • Adelaide, ACT

          • @XCOM v2: Is there a northside chicken that’s better than Tegels?

Ohhh, you’re indirectly saying don’t touch my Tegels haha since you reside in the northside

    • +3

Probably as best as you can get for store bought, freezer chicken.

    • +2

IMO no, but they're passable if you lack the willpower/motivation/knowledge to cook for yourself and you need something in a pinch. Easy and cheap.

  • Are these proper chicken portions with bone - wings, drumsticks, etc? Or just shaped chicken nuggets?

    • +3

These are portions with bone in. Last time I got wings and drumsticks if I remember right.

        • +1

          You are incorrect.

          • @mapax: Ahhh wait. Theres "Tenders" and theres "Portions". Portions have bones, Tenders don't. The packaging is very similar except for that text.

  • +4

Certainly beats that Stranger Things Hellfire Chicken wings they are trying to flog, 500 grams for $10, tell em they're dreamin

    • +4

My favourite is the “Squid Game inspired” products that contain checks notes NO SQUID

IT’S IN THE NAME! YOU HAD ONE JOB!
There are literally no Korean flavour inspired ready to cook squid products on the wide market, this was your chance!

  • +3

They don't sell the Tegel Take Outs Louisiana Style Burgers at coles? They never seem to be reduced much at woolworths any more- https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/173697/teg…

    • +4

      These were awesome half price!

      • +5

That was ages ago at Woolies. I miss those days.

  • +1

    Taken out!

  • never had these….so they are KFC style you can cook in an air fryer?

how close to KFC are they?

and are they real chicken cuts - not like mystery meat schnitzels from the deli?

    • +1

Not the same as KFC really, But they're bloody delicious for their price.
And yeah they use real chicken (as you can see on the package. 100% NZ Chickens)

      • +1

Oh and most of the time I spray some oil on them at the start, and again about 2/3 through if they look like they're going to be too dry. That gives a better result again.

        • I've found there's plenty of oil that comes out of it when I cook them.

          • @kiitos: I know several people have said the same as you on here in the past. That's not my experience though. They come out of the bag quite dry, especially compared to the similar product from AldiColesWorths. (The Aldi version is quite good too, better than ColesWorths from memory, but I only had them once.) So if I don't spray some oil on the coating is so hard and difficult not to burn before the chicken is cooked (isn't still red in some places inside).

It can't be oil already inside your air fryers from previous cooking sessions dripping down - or can it? I mean I do get SOME oil, maybe 1/2 teaspoon from cooking 3 pieces. But when I was eating these all the time I'd have to cook maybe a dozen bags worth to produce enough oil to bother cleaning the glass bowl. (I sit food on a wire rack and just keep cooking over any oil for a few weeks until it's high enough the bowl needs cleaning.)

            • @[Deactivated]: OK, I agree, I know what you mean about the breadcrumbs being dry on top. I cook these in the oven, on a tray with baking paper and there is a puddle of oil on the tray after cooking, and the crumbs on the underside are wet with it.

              • @kiitos: Ah I see… So maybe that is why some people see much more oil than others. i.e. Maybe there's something about placing pieces on a flat surface that draws more oil out!?

    • +7

you can cook in an air fryer?

      Yes.

how close to KFC are they?

Depends on your taste but they are LIKE kfc, not the SAME AS. I can taste SOME of the same spices but no, it's not KFC. It is closer than say the pieces at ALDI or Coles ones but that's not saying much. The best description I can give is they are an ALTERNATIVE TO kfc, more like if you made it at home using some maggi spice recipe packet.

The hotter one is quite hot, too hot for me, wasn't enjoyable. I like spices with my chicken, not chicken with my spices. Spices should compliment food, not suffocate it.

They cook much dryer so keep the heat down and cook for a longer time. Otherwise they'll probably wind up burned. I remove them when I see burning just starting on tips of the pieces but usually I cook 3 pieces spaced apart, for 30-35 minutes, at 180. I use a halogen oven though (glass bowl type air fryer) not a draw type. If they start to burn early sometimes I microwave them a couple of minutes. Any longer and they taste weird. That's a hint to turn the heat down and cook longer next time.

      are they real chicken cuts

Yes, real chickens cut into pieces. Thus they vary in size. Because they go by weight I once got a bag with only 3 pieces. They were huge. Two were one piece but the size of chicken marylands you see in ColesWorths.

    So tasty

  • Have tried both the normal one and spicy ones on two occasions now and they have really grown on me. Absolute bargain at $7.

  • My coles only has the chicken burger and chicken steaks. :(

  • Can these be done on a bbq (with the lid down)

    • the breading's literally gonna turn into mush

    • why cook frozen chicken on a bbq? If you have a bbq, surely you have an oven?

      • I was thinking of taking them camping

  • Ordered 10 bags… Thanks OP

  • Thanks OP. I always keep a bag in the freezer so now I can stock up.

People keep saying the Nashville is too hot. To me, it's mild and way tastier than the Louisiana, which I didn’t buy again after trying it the first time.

  • +11

    3/10 - avoid

    • +10

I’m a bit the same I tried them a year ago and they were rubbery and horrible. Nothing like or close to KFC. But everyone is different so if they make people happy then awesome

  • +3

Madness frozen old boilers in a cheap breading this stuff is not good at all.

    My advice

Buy a fresh chook segment into 1/8 soak in buttermilk over night make your own seasoned flour and fry.

    • +1

Seasoned flour - garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and bit of cayenne pepper mixed with 1part corn flour and 2 parts Plain flour. Salt and ground black pepper to taste.
I Brine 30 minutes first for the Moisture, then S- flour, then Buttermilk with a beaten egg mixed through, then back to the S-flour and Knock off the excess flour both times. 180C Airfry 15-20 mins depends on size.
You can thank me later because KFC won't ever see me again.

  • Has anyone tried the grilled version of these from tegal ? Also curious to know where the chicken comes from it’s just listed from multiple origins

    • +2

      From the egg!

    • I've tried the flame grilled. It's reconstituted chicken

  • Can someone confirm whether these things have bones as I can't see tell from the pics or description

    • +2

More bones then an 18 th century dinosaur discovery!

    • +1

      yes they do.

  • +4

When I tried this brand earlier in the year I thought the burgers were ok but wasn’t really sold on the portions.

    • +1

Yeah the portions can be very hit and miss. The burger paddies were always mint, shame they're never half price :/

      • From memory the portions I had were crispy on the outside but the skin underneath the coating was fatty and gelatinous. might have to try another pack but I’m pretty sure my local Coles doesn’t have the portions.

        • +1

I found them the same. The texture and taste of the skin underneath put me off. I tried a few packs and tried different cooking temps and times in the air fryer. I prefer my chicken well and truly cooked but the skin texture/taste was always the same.

The coating itself is decent tasting, if a little salty, and the chicken itself was good in the bigger portions.

  • -5

These ones were a watery gooey mess, not sure if they're pumped with water of some goo but they need over an hour in the air fryer with multiple cuts to drain the mess out to make them edible. Would not buy them again.

    • -4

Thanks for saying this, won't bother buying, sounds like too much hassle lol

      • Steggles Chicken Pieces Flaming Wing Nibbles Spicy 1kg

They're not really spicy, and are good in 15-20 minutes in the air fryer. Still miss the Cole's frozen honey soy chicken nibbles, not sure why they got rid of them, they were always popular and hard to find, @ 6/7$ they were awesome.

      • +2

I disagree strongly with this comment and echo the majority of the others who are positive. Something is wrong with old mates air fryer cause these come out crispy AF

        • +1

Plot Twist - AuQld works for a competitor lol

  • +2

Cheers OP. Got 2 of each. finding stock is hard… They are delicious - 30m in airfryer

    • Got 3 this morning, thanks OP for sharing this. I can vouch also for 30 minutes in the air fryer. After that let it sit for a couple of minutes. It would be crispy, spicy and juicy on the inside.

Don't follow the packaging instructions with a 40-minute air fryer, it'll be dry.

      • 30mins at what temp?

Do you give it a shake at the halfway point?

        • +3

          180 deg
also some pieces are huge (breast) while some are smaller (wing), so I wouldn't say its a flat 30min for all

        • +4

"Do you give it a shake at the halfway point"
          No after you finish

  • Great reviews, never tried it. I’ll get some tonight!

  • Didn't rate the portions at all but seriously miss the half price deals on the burgers!

  • Can you pan fry these?

  • Made 2 pieces for dinner. They were nice nothing like kfc but they were stingy bastards only 4 pieces in the bag. Good i only paid $7 per bag.

    • They are sold by weight. At least one of your pieces must have been huge. Hopefully you got 1000g total.

What I wonder is how accurate the total weight can be when the size of the pieces is so variable. Imagine the average piece is 300g, do they give you 3 pieces (900) or 4 pieces (1200). I assume there isnt a 100g piece.

  • +1

    Bought both yesterday.
Cooked in air fryer. Came out good.
Worth it for $7 a bag.
