Meh. If you're going to get a cooling stand for a laptop, get a simple one with a giant fan instead of 5 little ones.

It'll move more air, more quietly.

    • -3

Depends on what you want to use. The bigger fan will get noisy and more dusty

      • +1

Bigger fans spin slower for the same airflow. So they're quieter.

It's a pi*r^2 thing so by doubling the diameter you get a disproportionate amount of area increase and airflow. Double the size of the fan, you get 4x the airflow. Or more than 4x as the outside blade edges are moving faster than a small fan, for the same rpms.

That's why server fans which are 40mm compared to desktop fans at 120-140mm have to spin at 4000rpm and sound like turbines.

        • I agree with you the bigger fan will get more airflow (if they run at the same speed) but depends its speed, the noise level and airflow will be different

    • Depends on what you want to use it for I guess. For me it's better to have multiple fans. I have the router over to one side and the NBN box sits on one of the smaller fans. Sure it's not so quiet but I have my two NAS sitting next to it and they have fans running 24/7 as well. I guess some people would hate the noise but I'm used to it.

    • 100% agree unless you retrofit some quality quiet silent fans with rubber dampeners and suggest checking specifications for dB ratings.

I have used a DeepCool N80 for several years to prevent thermal throttling in warm sun facing rooms and it works a treat. It uses a singular and quiet fan - less noisy and lower frequency than the laptops own fan and due to the large size of the casing it covers larger 15inch laptops fine. Long term will use an under desk tray to make it completely silent.

Save your money. You'll get a similar result by just having your laptop slightly elevated.

  • +4

I have one of these. I've been using it 24/7 for over 2 years to cool my NBN box and router.

  • How much is it regularly

    edit: Just saw - $39

  • This has nothing to do with PS4 or PS5. Just buzzwords added in for search hits.

These budget laptop coolers have always been this price in frequent sales, I dont see much of a sale here.

@DASHCAM NOW DUDE is not entirely wrong, not sure whats with the neg here. These cooling pads all perform the same and lower laptops by few degrees at best, and compared to a elevated stand without fans - not much more.

If you constantly hang around online gaming laptop discussion circles like discord or reddit, you will see the IETS GT500 style is the only design that works as 'advertised' - not an ad here by the way, just this brand is most popular in the west (where this design originated in china there is a lot more options). The reason is two fold:

    1. They are mains powered, and pushes far more air than a USB power design;

    2. The single centrifugal/blower fan design, combined with the foam surround means the air is forced through the laptop's bottom intake unlike others;

Of course, this is not without downsides of its own, which is namely their pricetag, and the noise they produces.

The only use case I would recommend these usb powered ones is as per @ozbs25. Where if you have NBN box/router/ or some other eletronics thats passively cooled through the external chassis as a medium for a 'heatsink', then yes, these would do just fine and there is no point going for a GT500 style cooler.

Otherwise, I would really only recommend an elevated laptop stand, or if you really want to lower your temps by that much, just spend the extra for the GT500 or any design that looks like it. Alternatively, maybe hang around aliexpress to see if a shop over there sells a similiar one, or, if you can read chinese or find someone that knows chinese, they are 200-300 CNY on Taobao - you can pay with an australian CC and shipped to an australian address no problem - my CC statement showned me being charged by a Taobao branch based in Melbourne.

    • My upvote is only really because of how mine has performed, not so much on the price. While it is cheaper than what I paid for it, and well could be the all-time low on Amazon, I guess it's not an amazing discount.

I'm on my second one from this company and while the first was probably within the warranty period, I'm really not using it as intended. I'm definitely satisfied with the milage I've gotten out of them. I have never used these as a laptop cooler so I can't comment on how they perform for that purpose.

I've kinda been waiting for my current one to die as I have 3 other cheap coolers than I managed to get on clearance from Officeworks and they should tide me over for many many years. I really should test them all out at some stage I suppose.

  • I have never paid attention to the prices of these things, as any decently designed laptop that's not sitting on a soft surface like a bed will have sufficient cooling.

But I'm agreed that these things are largely pointless over even just using a big hardback book.

Or for preventing something like this:

They were always trivially cheap in Asia, they're so simple to make with such cheap components. But stuff in Oz seems to be higher priced so maybe $30 is a decent deal… still it's not much use. Maybe if you've got a gaming laptop with known thermal throttling issues.

I bought one of these second hand in 2018.

Gutted the fans and placed them on my solar inverter heatsink. Running from a 12v solar panel.

Dropped the inverter 20C, increased efficiency and longevity significantly. Fans are still running fine (even out in the weather)..

    • Do they run 24/7 out there, or does the inverter only supply the 12V when the sun is up?

      Sounds useful to decrease temperatures!

      • +1

Only when the sun is there. They run from a couple of old solar light solar panels wired in series.

So when the sun is bright, they run hard. When its cloudy, they slow/ stop. Simples.

        • Cheers mate, I appreciate the info. I'll be looking at doing something like this.
Do you have any pics of your setup? Just for inspiration :)

          • +1

@DiscountForThee: Pretty basic. Just a small solar panel siliconed on to the roof facing north nearest to the inverter. Speaker wire running along the gutters, down a down pipe then over to the inverter. Fans sit on top of the inverter and draw air up and out of the heatsink.

Only thing to note. The cheap solar panels go hazy after a while. Need a sand/ polish with car polish to keep the fans spinning optimally. Have just tried spraying with clear car paint. Will see how that goes.

            P.S. I recommend a solar pond pump panel or a 10 - 20w solar panel from ebay.

  • Can anyone recommend a low-profile cooling pad, something like Deepcool N65? I want the front edge of the laptop to be as close to the table as possible.

Seems like this model is discontinued, I could only find it on Catch for $160
