why not use octoprint + literally any other camera?

    • Absolutely agree, would cost less than $40 for a Pi Zero 2 and knockoff Pi Cam HD with IR.
This is presumably much easier to setup but should be no problem for anyone using 3D printers.

    • It looks like this is essentially an octopi and webcam aio package. Factor in the cost of a raspberry pi + even a cheapo webcam this isn't a bad deal ( no idea on performance of this but). Can see the appeal if you don't have old tech gear lying around to install octoprint on or don't want a pi for other later uses

pi zero 2w $30 (core electronics), cheapo amazon webcam $10, sdcard $10. would much rather just use a pi than this product, also you control octoprint, no cloud spying on you (or backdooring your network). :)

Completely agree and today's deal on the zero 2w is excellent timing, I bought another one and I'll figure out the use case later. They're also hard to come by, lot of people wind up with a pi 4 for this use which was what I was thinking on cost comparable.

I also have friends who's 3D print experience is download from thingiverse - slice in cura - print and they don't want to play with pi, similar market to simplyprint.

My octoprint is an old android tv box that I flashed it with debian + an old samsung note4 with ip webcam app as a camera. Works great. Costed me $0. I can even turn on the mobile's flashlight through HA.

@Man10United: yeah, you can actually run octoprint completely on android with the phones cam for monitoring, never used but I'm sure everyone has an old phone lying around (or buy a cheapo woolies one when the clearance deals come around)

            • @Leho: Yeah I heard that. My setup only uses the mobile phone as a camera. Octoprint is a docker in android-tv-box which I repurposed it to a debian machine.

  • Undoubtedly, Octoprint boasts power functionality. However, Octoprint can be challenging for somebody to set up, particularly when it comes to extensions. And the beagle camera is designed for some people who don't want to make the configuration, no complex configurations are needed.
