  • Anyone knows what steel it is made of?

    • Doesn't say.
      Also no reviews.

    • -1

      Stainless steel ;D

    • +2

      Most likely 420J2.

    • I only have a petty knife and the edge holds up alright. I reckon a decent deal for individual knives under $14 from a reputed Japanese brand.

  • +8

Obviously trading on the Yaxell name, there is no evidence that these are a deal at all. Same as this knife without the dodgy "Yakselllll" branding: https://www.amazon.com/TSUBAZO-Japanese-Kitchen-Stainless-Sh…

And OP, why did you put "(Yaxell)" in the title, when it's not claimed by the product?

    • Caution is good, but I think you'll find the Yaksel is just a translation issue. They're sold by Amazon JP and under the brand they are listed as ヤクセル which is Yaxell.

      • +3

Just for a laugh, search for "Yaxell 30046" and see what site's they're up on. All fake magnets. "Want.jp", "yahoo stores" (that exists). Ubuy Algeria has them too.

  • +1

It's mentioned under the title where "Brand" is mentioned.

    • +2

These are the most obvious fakes since my dad bought a toy camera which played nursery rhyme tunes in Times Square and thought he'd just bought his first digital camera.

      True story.

      • https://www.amazon.com.au/30599-Stainless-Beginners-Japanese-Tsubasa/dp/B07BTFBHYP/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=%E3%83%A4%E3%82%AF%E3%82%BB%E3%83%AB(Yaxell)&qid=1693660196&sr=8-5&th=1

I have this one which I mentioned above.

        • +5

          You have a fake.

Here is the actual list of Yaxell knives. The knives are a completely different league, and critically, the markings are completely different: http://www.yaxell.co.jp/global/products/index.html

I mean, look at the quality of the stamp on that knife, even that's balls.

You think you bought a Yaxell knife for $13?

Here's a list of Yaxell products from an decent supplier. Show me a knife that looks anything like yours: https://www.kitchenwarehouse.com.au/search?q=yaxell&p=1&dir=asc&sort=price&categories.url=search|%2Fsearch&inActive=false&display=true

Show me a knife on that list under $50

@Joker042: There are way more available locally in Japan. This is sold by Amazon Japan which is most likely available locally. Anyway, No further argument if you think that Amazon is selling fakes. You are entitled to your opinion.

            • +5

@Bazeegar: So you can show it listed on the Japanese Yaxell site then?

                • +5

@B Wat: Aight, thanks for that. Have a nice day then.

                • +19

@B Wat: Worked up over people selling and buying fakes? That's absolutely a valid thing to get worked up over.

          • +2

@Joker042: It's WAY easier to fool people than to get them to realise they've been fooled, as can be seen on this site daily.

  • +7

I've got to agree with @Joker042 here. If you can't find them on the actual company website, I'd say they're fakes unless someone can show otherwise?

    • -3

they are not fakes, just incorrectly labelled by amazon. If you look at the initials stamping on them (the four chinese looking characters), it is different from yaxell's japanese name.

      • +6

Splitting hairs on the definition of fake. 'mislabelled' vs 'fake' is a fiiiiine line.

Also doesn't the seller pick the metadata? (brand, model, etc)

        • How dare you, it's a homage, it gives honour to the quality of the genuine Yaxell when people buy fake crap for the same money they could buy a Victorinox

        • Yes seller provides the description etc. Friend got scammed by a seller of fake audio equipment claiming to be a highly regarded and reputable brand product. The Amazon price was a good discount on other sellers but not so cheap as to be immediately obvious that the product was a fake. Seller didn't bother to dispute the refund claim, nor did he/she ask for the product to be returned. The notion that all Amazon products are what they claim to be is fantasy. There are plenty of videos around exposing fakes and showing differences to be aware of. Caveat emptor.

    関鍔蔵作 Seki Tsubazura

The brand is Seki Tsubazo-saku. Cheap stamped stainless. Seki is also where Yaxell Corp. is, hence the confusion.

Ps. Regardless of who made these or where, I personally wouldn't buy either brand.

  • What is a beginners knife? Does it have a plastic blade like kids scissors?

    • +1

beginners knife means it’s small investment so you can decide what shape blades and handles suit you …steel might be soft also so you sharpen more often but also easier to sharpen ….. once you know what blade shape and handle you like you might buy one made of harder steel e.g vg10 ….. less risk than buying a$120 knife and finding you don’t like the shape of the handle or blade after using for a while.
japanese knife patterns aren’t for everybody

    Yaxell doesn't do these cheapies!

    • Yaxell doesn't do these cheapies

I don't know this product but it has the made in Japan print plus it's delivered by Amazon Japan so why it's a cheapie?

      • +1

Yeah sure, there's no way anyone could forge a 'made in Japan' stamp…

        • The knives come from Amazon Japan and I assume that they are located in Japan and also countries have rules regarding forging a locally made stamp.

          • +1

@billadm: Amazon is a market place. They don't check to validity of labels, descriptions, origins and quality of products etc.

Countries have copyright, patents etc which are completely ignored by other jurisdictions. Some also have a problem with fakes being made to look almost exactly like quality brand name products, some of which are manufactured in the same country as the "original". I'm sure you can guess the main transgressor. A quick google might shock you as to the extent of fakery.

  • Thanks op. I give it a go. Hope these better than IKEACheapies

    • +2

Ironically if you bought Ikea Briljera you would get a much better knife

      • +1

Why get one good knife when you could have four rubbish ones, though?

    • +2

Honestly, return them. Why you'd bother with fake cheap knives is anyone's guess. Ikea is "fine", victorinox a bit of a step up, and then globals are the go-to "every household" knife if you wanted something decent.
