Went through the quotes process with these guys previously, and while we didn't go ahead (we got a very good deal elsewhere - 11kw system for $9k without the Vic solar rebate) they were well informed and happy to workshop potential issues.

Our quote from them ended up ~$6.5k for a 6.6kw system though with all the additional extras (double storey, 3 phase power, kliplock roof, extra wiring) so keep that in mind.

About par for a 6.6kw system is $3k, you still need to pay $3400 which isnt really anything to write home about.

  • Can anyone confirm if the Vic solar rebate is eligable to holiday home owners? I was of the impression it wasnt but cant for the life of me find anything to verify that on the vic solar website. All it says is you have to be a home owner. Appreciate any feedback

    • Hey Mate,

From our understanding of the program and after chatting to solar vic for other customers a holiday home is not eligible for the rebate unless it is a rented property.

As a consumer you can claim the following:

1 x Rebate as Owner Occupier of your primary home
2 x Rebates for a rental property during the current financial year (criteria here: https://www.solar.vic.gov.au/information-landlords#rebate-el…)

Best way would be to give Solar Vic a call on 1300 376 393 and confirm.

      Cheers,

      Matt
      Cerium Energy

      • -3

Gotcha. Seems a little unfair to be honest. Dont see the diff between a rented property and a holiday home. I get only one claim per family regardless of homes owned. I already have panels from early Pfit days and not sure upgrading this home makes sense as we intend to upgrade within the next 5 years. Anyway will give Solar vic a call to confirm.

        • Violins out for the wealthy holiday home owner. If only everyone could be so fortunate

          • -1

@0 0 0: Oh get over yourself. Im sick of entitled people like yourself having a go at people who have chosen to make sacrifices to do something to better their own and their kids futures. Im far from wealthy. Single income family earning under 75k. We just make sacrifices and chose to pay off our mortgages quick rather than waste it on un-necessary luxuries. It can be done. Many just choose to not make the sacrifice. Thats on you.

            • +1

@hazzad: Heh I'm not the one with the holiday house looking for govt handouts. We sacrificed holidays to put the money towards the mortgage

            • @hazzad: Haha the irony of you calling someone else entitled after claiming it's unfair you cant get a rebate on your holiday house solar panels

            • @hazzad: I assume you feel similarly if someone made sacrifices to end up in a career that makes them a high income?

              • @JR63: I have no idea what correlation you are trying to make there. In fact congrats to that person as they have done exactly what im referring to. Worked hard, achieved promotions and gotten pay rises. Thats how life generally works for most of us. IM referring to those who simply put lifestyle before a home. I see it ever day with people around me. Buy take away, go on holidays, go out and eat at restaurants, buy all the leatest gadgets and tech, get the new car. Sure its all great. but if you want to actually achieve getting your own home, many of those things arent necessary and can get you to owning your own home. Cant live without those things, then dont complain if you cant get a loan to buy a home.

            • @hazzad: You chose to purchase a second property, that's on you. You can't expect other taxpayers to subsidise your lifestyle when the current generation can't even afford one house, let alone two.

              • -1

@BargainMe: To all of the above. Again thats all on you guys. The amount of people that have tall poppy syndrome on this site just because someone else has worked hard to buy a 2nd property amazes me. Im sure all you guys would knock back a subsidy or hand out. If you would then you are clearly on the wrong site or are possibly in denial. Im sure you all game the system for what you can. I simply asked the question as there is no clear answer(as also alluded to by the OP). If i cant take advantage of the subsidy then so be it. This whole "cant afford a house" story is a joke. Housing can be bought affordably. Many just choose to not disadavantage their lifestyle or simply dont want the inconvience of having to live further away be it in the outer burbs or in the country. I contstantly talk to young adults who seem to think they deserve to walk into a high paying job just because they want to buy a house and live a comfortable lifestyle. News flash. I takes sacrafice and patiance to get there for most of us. From what i see a lot of people cant/dont want to do either.

And yes i chose to do it and wouldnt change a thing. Im blessed to have a 2nd home to holiday at. But i work damn hard to afford it.

              • -1

@BargainMe: That’s rubbish. I’m 23 years old and I own two properties (a house in Norlane & a unit in Corio). The reason I’ve been able to do this is that I’ve have had a part time job since I was 15 years old. I also had to cut down my days at uni for the second one so I could work 4 days a week instead of 3 to qualify for the loan, which made my degree take 1.5 years longer than it would’ve if I continued to do it full time.
It’s all about the sacrifices the person is willing to make. I understand that I’ve privileged to a certain extent (being able to live with my parents rent-free, living in a country that allows uni debt to be deferred through HECS etc.), but I also worked damn hard to buy both of those properties and there are heaps of people in a similar position to me that decided not to make those sacrifices (and are now complaining they can’t afford a house). In my case both of them are currently rented out so I could take advantage of this offer and it is tempting, but I don’t think I will as I can see them being more hassle than they are worth. At the end of the day, the tenant would be the one getting the benefit from it, not me. I just get the hassle & costs of maintaining it.

    • You can only receive 1 solar vic solar home (panel) rebate per household per owner/occupier. If you (or anyone listed on the Council Rates Notice) have received a solar vic solar homes rebate in the past, you are not eligible for it again. If you already have solar on your current primary residence or you do not want the solar homes rebate on your primary residence you can absolutely receive the rebate on your holiday home; keeping in mind you will not be eligible for it again on another residence (currently for the lifetime of the program) even if you sell the property.

Also assuming you meet the other criteria:
Combined Australian taxable income of under $180k (calculated by NOA from either of the previous 2 financial years)
House valued at under $3mil (according to council rates notice).
if the property already has existing solar you also are not eligible (unless the solar panels were installed prior to nov 2009).

If you receive the solar homes rebate (solar panel rebate) you will not be eligible for the battery loan (unless it has changed from going to loan from rebate), but you could also be eligible for the hot water rebate.

If your council rates notice is in the name of a business or trust, it will not be accepted.

I think I will wait for hybrid inverters and batteries to come down in price… It seems to me you really need to get storage to benefit the most out of solar these days.

dammit, can't decide… time to flip a coin.

    • Do your own calcs dude. It's different for each situation.

  • For those that love reviewing/reading data does the Sungrow Inverter come with a WiFi monitoring system to see how much your producing and if returning any electricity back to the grid ?

    • You'll be able to see how much you're generating overall but not how much self-consumption or how much is being fed back into the grid unless you add the consumption meter.

    • Hey Sk11,

Yes the Sungrow has a Wi-Fi monitoring system known as iSolarCloud. The basic version allows for production monitoring only where you can see how much your system is producing.

To see consumption and feed back to the grid the system requires a Sungrow Energy (Smart) Meter to be installed. This is an additional piece of equipment and we charge $250 inc GST supplied and installed for the single phase energy meter (S100).

Some electricity retailers and distributers have apps which allow you to monitor similar information as well, however the most accurate and UpToDate info is via a smart energy meter.

Definitely a great deak… $1000k less, and1.25kW additional solar than I paid about 8mths ago… Although, I had microinverters installed as well - Unsure whether they're included bt default or not now. Being a 2 storey home, we have limitedroof area, so in hindsight I should havegonw for bigger pannels sooner, because I wont be upgrading them anytime soon!

  • What if there are broken tiles during installation
Who's repsobility is it to fix them.
I have delayed solar installation worrying about broken tiles and roof leaks.

    • +1

      Hey Bazeon,

Here at Cerium we take care of your broken tiles and replace them on the day at no extra cost, as installers its our responsibility to make sure we leave the roof in the same if not better condition then before we start, and we take great pride in our work. We do ask that you have spares on hand ready for the day of installation incase any tiles break or we find broken, chipped or silicone tiled on the roof. In most cased 5-10 tiles are plenty. However Terracotta tiles tend to be more brittle and we sometimes require a few more.

As part of our service prior to installation we will discuss these particulars with you to ensure there are no issues on the day and we don't leave your home exposed to weather elements due to broken or missing tiles.

The only sure way to make sure the roof is kept in a good condition post install is to replace any broken tiles, silicone will only last for a certain amount of time and start causing issues down the track. Silicone is an OK temporary measure however replacement is thew best and thats what we do and prefer.

We don't claim to be perfect and sometimes roof leaks happen, what we are proud of is that we will be back to site as early as possible to rectify any leaks and have it fixed for you immediately (of course if its caused by us) even if its not our fault we will find a temporary solution for you to ensure there is no further damage from the leak.

Used tiles are easy to find and there are some major tile suppliers all over Melbourne, Sunshine Roofing (West), Canterbury Roof Tiles, Eastern Roofing, Gilbert Roofing (East) and a handful more. These guys have tiles from practically every recent time period and shapes and colors.

We also help our customers source tiles from time to time if needed.

I would be happy to discuss further with you to help you with your specific needs please feel free to reach out via PM, email or call us.

      Regards,

    • My cousin supervised 4 properties installed with tiles. Some with slightly dodgy operators. No leaks so far. 5 years and running.

  • What's the current backlog/lead time for eastern suburbs in Victoria?
How many people in your installation team and how many teams do you have? My biggest fear is getting a subcontractor who walks away absolving themselves of any liability down the track. Would prefer an experienced team to do it right the first time. I've sent a quote request through as I'm keen to get a system installed prior to summer

    • That's exactly my fear too and the other is leaving broken roof tiles without replacing them… I have received my quote on Saturday morning as promised by Michael. I need to clarify a few things with the quote as I have specific requests for the installation.

    • +1

Highly recommend, was a little concerned because I've never installed solar before but it was the quickest and smoothest experience ever. Matt and Michael both extremely responsive. The electrician who installed the system was great too.

Quote on received and accepted on 02/09.
      SolarVic rebates approved on 05/09.
Panels and inverter initially planned to be installed on installed on 10/09 but bad weather so done on 12/09.
Independant Energy Safe Victoria inspection passed on 15/09 - System turned on and in use.
Solar metering updated with energy provider 19/09.

Northern Metro VIC, hope that helps.

    • Dude, Controlled load shouldn't be affected. its on a different circuit and meter. I am not an electrician but my uncle is.
