  • Anyone know if this would be suitable for a RAV4 hybrid when going away on long trips?

    • As in, the car is sitting there for a long time whilst you travel? Or you are taking the RAV4 with you as you travel?

      • Sorry I was not clear, as in car is sitting there for a long time.

        • +1

          Yeah, this would be suitable.

  • I have lithium battery in a few motorcycles that get used rarely through the year. The batteries seem to cope ok but wonder if better hooking up one of these to trickle them. Normally before I use them I just charge them up to top them up.

    • +2

I always thought lithium batteries were better stored long term at half charge.

      • After, that’s definitely true for Lithium ion batteries like those used in small electronic devices. The batteries you’re talking about are most likely lithium iron batteries, I believe the same is true but it may be worth checking it up

        • I thought that too, but apparently LiFePo chemistry doesn't have a problem sitting at 100% charge. (Big changes in temperature are worse for them).

I'd imagine the charger won't actually trickle charge in Lithium mode anyway. It should stop and monitor, and only start charging again once battery drops below a certain level.

          • @bamzero: Well at lest I knew enough to know I didn’t know! That’s really good to hear for off grid applications.

          • @bamzero: Yes this is what I was thinking. Might do some more research.

          • @bamzero: Yes, lithium batteries that you would find in motorcycles are actually supposed to be fully charged before being put away.

I currently have 3 bikes (2 road/race bikes and a dirt bike) and they all use lithium batteries and have always been stored 100% charged.

The battery in one of them is actually 8yo now!! I'm waiting for it to die but I every time I charge it I also balance the cells (can't do this with the charger being sold here) and they still charge fully.

            • @educalifa: Do you trickle charge these to keep them topped up? Or disconnect when not in use.

              • @HitlersDad: The race bikes have master switches so they're isolated when turned off. I still give them a top up every month if I'm not riding. It usually only takes about 4-5min to reach 100% again.

On the dirt bike, I trickle charge it. But that's cause that bike probably has some sort of slow drain from something… if I leave it for more than 3 weeks or thereabouts, it gets dangerously low and Lithium batteries don't recover well from that.

                • +1

@educalifa: Yes I have a slow drain thing as well on my dirtbike but the road bike seems to stay pretty good after a month or two.
                  Thanks.

  • Would this work for lifepo4 120ah batteries that recommend a 14.6v 40a charge?

  • +2

Is it normal to get sparks on initial contact of the negative clamp with car chasis?

I always connect red clamp to battery positive terminal first (no spark) and then the black clamp to car chasis (spark), then only plug in the charger into wall socket.

    • +1

Yes, so clamp to grounding metal away from fuse box, rubbers, battery, oil/radiator etc

  • What's better, this or Century?

  • -1

    Goone Tooilet

  • Anyone here own one? Can comment on charging LiFePo batteries with this?
