Regular gives Premium version and free updates for 1 year (premium version still works after this but does not update) and Lifetime gives Premium version plus updates forever.

It should also be noted that 1 license also grants you usage on multiple devices.

The premium license version gives BigBox mode which allows for many different custom made themes that are available for down load on their forum. The key thing is customisation and the ability to run videos of your games as part of the theme, which enhances things a great deal.

The Premium License also gives you a 25% discount at EMU Movies which is a website that will allow you to automatically download all HD movie files for most games out there. You get the discount as as an email with a code sent to you after you purchase LaunchBox.

LaunchBox also gives you access to automatically download many different types of high quality artwork for your games/ROMs collection, including screenshots, arcade flyers, marques, control panels, box art and more all from within the LaunchBox program. But they do not have the movies to auto-download, that is why EMU movies is good to get too.

But you can actually download the low/medium quality movies in large packs from EMU Movies website with a free account and then place them manually within your hard drive folder structure, but I don't think the free account at EMU Movies will allow you to auto-download them within the LaunchBox app, just not sure on that one.

LaunchBox is a very comprehensive software with many, many options and really automates and centralises all your emulators and ROMs together and automatically downloads all your artwork, all in a very robust platform that is regularly updated by a team that engages with their community strongly. I recommend it for people who are really into emulation and want a software front end that makes things a lot easier to manage all their collections in a very attractive and customisable way.

been using RetroBat as it is free, is it worth to change to launchbox?

    • +1

I can't say, but RetroBat seems pretty good from what I looked at just now on their webpage.

Launchbox is really good at automating stuff and giving a lot of flexibility with themes etc, so maybe that could offer some improvements over RetroBat that would be worth the investment for you?

There are lots of good videos on Youtube about Launchbox that might give a better idea, I also linked one in the description showing recent features added.

Plus, I hastily recorded a video just now, showing some Bigbox mode and Desktop mode footage of a few systems I have currently setup, that should hopefully give a better idea of what this software can offer. Link is below:

Thanks heaps for your input! I shall have a look.

        • You're welcome :)

  • Was thinking of getting a Steam deck and just using Emu Deck but this could be a good option

2x2 rubix cube is easier than 3x3

      I think I'd still have trouble with 1x1. :(

    • I agree, but I find it easier to teach someone the 3x3

launchbox looks pretty, but for some reason any mame games i play on it are laggy unless i play on top tier hardware.

When i try to play the same game on the same older hardware on something else (like emustation or maximus arcade) i get no lag whatsoever.

Launchbox is really pretty and feature packed, but this issue alone makes me not like using it on things like mame machines

any mame games i play on it

LaunchBkx isn’t an emulator, nor is EmulationStation. The emulator would determine performance, not the launcher.

      • +2

I understand that, but something is happening on the launchbox end that's causing issues, because when I play direct from mame emulator everything is fine aswell.

Perhaps something is up with the default setup of mame emulator when launchbox downloads it?

        • All launchbox should do is install Mame in the Launchbox\Emulators subdirectory, try running Mame directly from that subdirectory and see if that has issues.

        • I think this could be the problem, for instance, if you are letting Launchbox setup Retroarch for you when importing your roms, rather than pointing Launchbox at the emulator you usually use (on your hard drive) then this could be what is happening.

I point launchbox at my regular mame installation (I use Arcade64 version of Mame) and it simply launches it when I click on a game and runs exactly as it would without launchbox.

I'm not very familiar with Retroarch and obviously it has it's benefits but I prefer to use the emulators I'm already used to, that I know run well. Thankfully Launchbox accomodates either approach well.

            @wonderboy4: thanks, i'll give this a try

            • @whitepuma: You're welcome, I really hope this fixes the issue or at least points you in the right direction. Launchbox also has a pretty decent forum for getting support, so I recommend checking it out if you haven't already :)

I bought a single license last year to try out and it turned out to be the easiest way to create and maintain an arcade cabinet. Adding new games for any platform takes just a few clicks including all the art.

Highly recommended if you're running a Windows PC in your cab, I'll be upgrading to the forever license for sure.

The HDD in my 4 player arcade machine died last year, so I bought a new HDD from the same company…..for a decent amount of money.

      https://i.imgur.com/99V4Mbd.jpeg

However, it's not set up right. I thought it was just plug and play. I thought I would buy a new HDD/OS disk and just plug them in and play.

Now I can't even launch a game. I have no idea about Big Box, Launch Box, Hyperspin etc…

Does anyone know if there is anybody in Brisbane you can hire for an hour or two to help set it up?

      • I 'don't know of anyone who might offer a service like that.

But as long as all the roms and emulators and artwork/movies etc are all present on the HDD and you can easily locate and identify them via Windows explorer, you should be able to download a fresh install of Launchbox and simply point it to you roms folders and import each system one by one, also pointing it to you emulator executable files when prompted during the import. Then just tell Launchbox not to download or replace any artwork for any game that already has it.

There are some pretty good guides on Youtube for importing the various systems and roms, ETA Prime does quite a few of them.

If you made a backup of one of the systems on the HDD you got, just copying the roms, the emulator and artwork folders to another location and using this as a test to see if you can get one system up and running in the way I described. Then you should be able to go through and do all the rest one by one and get things working.

They really should give you support if they are selling you a hard drive though!

        • Yeah…..one of my main issues is assigning all the various buttons on the arcade machine. Do I need to do that through Big Box? I'm totally confused as to what that program is for.

          • +1

@jimbler: Big Box and Hyperspin are arcade frontends that you can choose and start your game from (Launchbox is also but is mainly for keyboard/mouse). To start, you'll likely need to assign the arcade buttons in Big Box by connecting a keyboard to your cabinet's PC, pressing Esc and going to Options->Controller Mapping. Go to each entry that relates to your physical arcade buttons, press Enter and then press the arcade button to map (E.g. Up, Down, Left, Right, Confirm, Back etc.).

This should get you started and from there each of the emulators you launch may need similar mappings too (e.g. F1 button for Retroarch configuration menu once you're in a game).

      • Not in Brisbane but I know those products very well and can help remotely. DM me if you like

Thanks mate. I'll do a bit more research over the next week and see how I go. I would like to get it up and running again soon…

      • Buying drives that come pre-setup is a real bad idea.

        1) The drive could be shit.
        2) The person who set it up could have no idea what they’re doing and put bad dump roms on it.
        3) You have no idea what malware they might have put on the drive. And you’re now running that inside your network.
        4) You paying for pirated material linked to your credit card and address. Not likely, but could end in legal trouble.
        5) When something doesn’t work, you don’t know how to fix it because you didn’t set it up.

I’d suggest not using it at all.

    • +1

@Salvsum Thankyou! Just fixed it 👍

  • I'm confused.. do you need to then download all the roms within this app as well?

So this is just the front portal for it?

  • +1

Yes, this is just a front end software to manage all your roms and emulators in one place, but it does download artwork for the games for you and can also download gameplay movies, which really enhances a collection imo.

Roms you have to get separately yourself, but full sets of many systems are widely available online and then you just point Launchbox at those folders you downloaded.
