Not knowing the specifics, but isn't there a newer model with updated internals?

If so, any way to tell whether this is that? 👀

    • +1

Different heat sink but not much else. This would be the newer model I think the previous was only the first year.

      • I thought they reduced the Heatsink first, but then did a redesign to improve efficiency, or is that all bull

        • There are three revisions that I know of. And yeah, seems the third had a little better efficiency to go with the slightly smaller still heatsink.

          • @TheContact: Yeh and I guess you could check the model number before opening this to see if it was somehow old stock 😅

        • Ah I didn’t realise there was a third revision.

Unfortunately there was no model number change between the first and second revisions. Not sure about the third.

    • +4

Gotta look at serial numbers I think. First iteration had a nice big heatsink, then they cut that down in the next iteration but didn't change anything else so thermals aren't great. Third iteration rectifies the thermal issues of the second iteration.

I suspect our summer is going to make it obvious who got the second iteration models.

Having said all that and given the hype around the ps5 release and its still relative rareness - as in you can't just pluck one off the shelf in any store at any time. I would say this is the latest iteration.

      • It has been proven that a bigger heatsink doesn't equate to better performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pwu_fkYwLEQ
I don't know about NSW but in VIC, you can definitely walk into almost any retailer and grab a PS5, the hype is over.

      • Having said all that and given the hype around the ps5 release and its still relative rareness - as in you can't just pluck one off the shelf in any store at any time.

This has not been an issue for most of the year. We are well past these being rare and hard to buy physical or online store

        • Not going to repeat myself.

  • +26

Jeez, just realised my launch ps5 is 3 years old very soon. How fast that has gone.

    • +10

And here I am still gaming on my PS3 I just picked up last year, and dreaming of one day maybe getting a PS4.

      • +4

I hope your dream is reality soon :)

      • +1

I found a PS3 on the street a few years back - certified bargain. It's a bit unfortunate that PS3 had no games, but I'm not complaining

      • +1

Do it! As amazing as the PS3 is as a (retro) gaming console, the PS4 is even better. Make sure you get Just Cause 3. Lots of other equally awesome games, but that one will give you a happy place you never knew you needed.

        • Retro? I was 21 years old in 2007 when the PS3 came out. I remember it was the pinnacle of graphics, the games were indistinguishable from reality. It has a damn bluray drive, and supports wireless controllers. Don't you dare try to tell me the PS3 is a retro console.

Anyway, I finally picked up my first PS3 in 2022, it was a first-gen (fat) model with early firmware, it came with three wireless controllers, upgraded HDD and 40 physical copy games, all for $300. I did the jailbreak, CFW, put on a bunch of my favorite games. It is the perfect gaming device. I got a second one a couple of months later for $50, to use for parts if this one starts to die. I'm still making my way through the backlog of games, once I'm done I'll start looking for a good deal on gumtree or marketplace for a PS4 bundle.

      • It's easy to softmod and make it a very capable current + retro console. I play PS3 games off my NAS over the network. Many YouTube videos out there (I recommend Blaine Locklair videos as they tend to be very easy to follow).

Also if you softmod you can also put it back to Stock anytime (just reflash the SONY firmware).

    • And there still isn't many games

  • +9

Just bought a ps4 for $125, haven't owned a PlayStation since ps2. So many games to catch up on. Currently starting with the last of us 1 and then 2 and then looking at the uncharted series…

    • +3

I highly suggest you grab the next 1TB Sata ssd on sale and throw it in! Will really save you some longggg loading times! Worth it imo.

    • did you mod it?

  • +14

I've been out of the loop for a long time. Seems crazy to me that $680 for a games console is now considered a bargain

    • +1

Yeah, how much were these when they first came out?

      • My friend paid $1400 for the scammer to get one for his son Christmas present.

        • +9

Not a scammer unless they did not get the console!

        • +11

The word you are looking for is scalper

      • Funny as I paid $670 (after amazon gift card and instant cashback from ZIP) from amazon on pre order hehe ;-)

    • +4

Well people are happy when someone posts a GPU "bargain" in the 4 figures…

    • +4

People forget but when the PS2 released it was $750 AUD. This was 23 years ago. And depending on who you talked to this was regarded as a relatively decent deal considering that it included a DVD player and they were obscenely expensive at the time.

    • +5

Game consoles have always been this sort of money really… In fact they've gotten much cheaper taking inflation into account.

      PS2 launch price - $749
      PS3 launch price - $999
PS4 launch price - $549 (AUD was near parity with USD at the time)
PS5 launch price - $749 disc $599 digital only (both RRP now increased by $50 #inflation)

      • @The Fuzz 83 @Binchicken22

I understand that launch prices have always been high. I figure that this is justified by the demand from early adopters. I'm curious to know how much the previous generations were worth after 3 years though.

        • +1

Yeah well I think normally we'd have seen a price drop by now, but I think you'll be aware of the micro chip shortages over the last few years have led to Sony selling as many as they can make as soon as they can make them… So not much incentive to drop prices.

        • Prices are a reflection of what the market will bear.

Nothing more, nothing less. There's not much benefit in making comparisons to the past.

A lot of things are different in the current market, like the size of the industry and the potential pool of customers.

One of numerous factors that allow them to have more consistency in price.

        • I think the reason that the price isn't dropping as much is probably two fold… Firstly these units are a lot more complex than the older units.

Moreso they used to be able to nearly giveaway the consoles and know they would make it back on the sale of a few games.

I think that there is less now far less revenue per user from game sales….

I'm sure Sony's cut has been eroded as game developers have become more powerful and multi platform has become the norm.

Additionally people might buy one just to play their back catalogue and PS Plus.

        • +1

A console is released like every 10 years with huge improvements everytime, the PS5 can go toe to toe with PC's twice the cost. I honestly would love to see the profit margin on consoles tbh. I always thought it was through games.

      • +1

The same amount of time after the PS3 was released, it was half the launch price and had double the storage capacity in a better form factor.

The PS4 was also almost a third cheaper in a better form factor.

        https://vgsales.fandom.com/wiki/Price_cuts#PlayStation_3

        • PS3 was netorious expensive when it was released though and it was losing ground to the Xbox 360 big time, so they had high incentives to cut prices there.

Now MS aren't dropping their prices either and PS is "winning" the sales battle, almost no incentive on their side to drop prices.

    • You must have been out of the loop for a very long time.

The launch price for a PS2 was $749 in 2000. Adjusted for inflation that is $1,334.

The launch price for the PS3 was $999.95 in 2007. Adjusted for inflation that's $1,474.33 today.

The launch price for the PS4 was $549 in 2013. Adjusted for inflation that's $675.24.

    • PS2 launched for $750

      • I did earlier today no issues

  • +1

Is there a new PS5 coming soon? I’m tempted for some reason to get one even though I game on PC haha.

    • +1

slim coming soon without disc. pro for next year very likely

I would wait pro. buying ps5 at this price is not a good idea unless you really need it now .

      • -1

buying ps5 at this price is not a good idea

🤷‍♂️. its the best time to buy imo. u’ll have plenty of games off of marketplace to enjoy without breaking the bank and these machines will last you for so many years

        • This is the reason I don’t game on PC anymore. No need to fiddle around. plug and play and last at least several years much cost effective

        • Yes and no. You're buying a console which you know will be superseded in a year's time by the Pro. Especially when you're not getting a HUGE discount on the current PS5. If you're in no real hurry, ideal option is to be one of the first to get your hands on the Pro when it releases. If you're in a hurry to play, then buy it now.

There are arguments about whether it's even worth getting the Pro since the current PS5 is already so powerful and people may not even be able to utilise it to its full potential (e.g. not everyone today has a 4k TV, let alone an 8K TV). If tech doesn't matter to you, then you're better off buying one now.

      • The latest leak (2 weeks ago) of the smaller model has a disc drive.

      • What is the need for a Pro right now?

Are the current games even using the full power of the PS5?

  • +2

they need to make a 'smaller' or 'slim' verson of this console

  • I want to get one but know I would only use it for exclusives because I already own a PC + Series X

    • I want one but only for PSVR2 but then the games library just isn't there at the moment and I'd have to drop another $800.

  • -3

i'll get one when ps5 can be modded.

which ps can be easily modded?

    • ps chinese version

  • Aw man. This hurts. I only just bought mine on Saturday with God of War and Spiderman Miles Morales for $915 at JB HI FI with the JB warranty..

Would they accept a refund and then price match? XD

    • +2

Have you opened it? If yes, no, if no, yes.
Retailers will only honour the difference if their own price changes shortly after purchase.
You can’t PM with other retailers after the transaction has been made.
You’re only hope (assuming you’ve opened it) is for JB to drop their price then get in touch with them.
If you haven’t opened it then you know what to do.

    • +1

JB are usually okay if it's within a week to match. They might offer credit/a gift card though? Worth asking regardless!

As an aside, are the games open? Aren't they on PS Plus or whatever?

      • Bought the discs and opened already.

    • JbHI not matching price just talked to them

  • -4

Why would I get this when people on Facebook are giving them away free all the time to punish their sons who don't study? /s

  • Remind me how ridiculous a graphic card cost now… sign…

  • +1

Looks like it’s been OzB’d? Appears as $795.99 in my cart.

  • +3

Sony decreasing the price of the PS5 and MS increasing the price of the Xbox Series consoles.

    CRAZY TIMES!!

    • Crazy alright! Has the Series X even gone on sale as much as the PS5 has? I don’t know what’s going on with Sony but I feel like MS has managed this a lot better.

      • Not really, only Amazon sometimes selling it at the previous price of $749, and other stores doing Xbox Series S deals a few times per year.

  • Shows over, back to $795.

  • Anyone got a screenshot of the $679.15 price? Would love to do a price protection claim

  • -3

how is this a deal? it's not 2020 anymore

Xbox Series X is more powerful, has game pass, and I got it for $599 with AmEx deal..

    • Xbox series X is more expensive right now, also since when does an Xbox play PS titles? I got my PC for Xbox/PC games, and the PS for PS and console games.

      • -2

for reference, I also have a gaming PC

I find it useful in some titles to try them on PC and then play on Xbox or vice versa, and my saves are automatically shared between the two, how clever is that? also some games like Control or Division play smoothly and quietly on Xbox while on PC they cause it to sound like a helicopter

PS is less powerful and has worse ecosystem compared to Xbox

there was plenty of opportunity to buy Xbox series X on AmEx deals, cheaper tham PS gas ever been, so how is "it's more expensive now" an argument

        • +3

So you basically have one PC, and a severely limited gaming only PC that plays the same games? I would say that's not useful at all, just my opinion I guess.

Sounds like you need better cooling on your PC?

PS has better exclusives, obviously. (for now at least). Even on the XBOX series X, nothing really takes full advantage of it, could be years before it does, so doesn't matter if the xbox is slightly more powerful. It's like playing Division and saying my 4090 is more powerful than your 4080 on my 1080p TV.

It's a "more expensive now" argument as they are more expensive now, compared to this deal. And we are in the now, not in the past.

I mean, what exclusives are on XBOX that aren't on PC? PS exclusives are obviously the better exclusives anyway, and some you can buy on PC eventually but poorly done ports. So if you had to own to devices, logic would say PS5 and PC.

          • @onlinepred: I would say I might need quieter fans on my pc 🤔

            it is a valid point

otherwise I mostly use PC for those games with super high skill ceiling requiring mouse, keyboard, and advanced macro capabilities not possible on consoles

the rest is played on console, and Xbox Series X is superb. have bought maybe 1 or 2 games as they dropped off the pass, otherwise pass has saved me lots of money. what are those amazing PS exclusives you're talking about? just out of curiosity

            • @shabaka: God of war, The Last Of US, Ghost of Tsushima, Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider man, Gran Turismo, Death Stranding, Bloodborne, Days Gone. The the whole PS collection and PS classics you get from subscription. I went from Xbox to PS as every game I played on Xbox I could play on PC with Xbox controller, it was 100% redundant for me, meanwhile I missed out on games that were PS exclusive. The games are leagues better than Forza/Gears/Halo - which you can play on PC anyway.

              • @onlinepred: How many of those titles offer a significantly better experience on a PS5 compared to a PS4.

                • +1

@nitens: How would you rate your experience going from platter disks to SSD on PC? And do you rate improved graphics at 60fps 4k? Or do you prefer not improved/remastered?

                  • @onlinepred: Was an honest question… I didn't know how many of these were remastered/enhanced on the ps5, and if their efforts paid off. Your comments make total sense to me RE getting pretty much every xbox title on PC and the PS5 saves waiting for an eventual PC/Xbox release years later, if at all.
