Please Recommend a TV in a Small Bedroom - Budget $400

We only have a big TV in our sitting room. Now that my wife and I are retired, we are thinking about putting a TV in our small bedroom (to be mounted on the wall) so that we don't have to get out of bed to watch TV early in the morning.

There is no antenna in our bedroom, will a smart TV allow us to watch free-to-air TV through the Internet? Our budget is $400. I found a 4K Kogan 50" smart Android TV for $375 but not really sure about the quality of a Kogan TV. Has anyone had any experience with it?

Please recommend if you are aware of any good deals that fit our budget. Thanks.

  • 50" is very large for even a large bedroom, let alone a small one (trust me I have one).

Try this TCL 40" for $395 - yes it will enable you to watch free to air via the abc/sbs/7/9/10 apps.

    • For the Size Depends on the length of your bedroom. We have a 55" and its pretty nice on the wall in the corner.

The main issue with cheap tvs is often their sound is crap so you have to get a soundbar as well as well as bottom of range tvs being made not being as good reliablilty as wise than brand names (That said, it really depends tv to tv ive had samsungs fail as well as kogans over the years)

I wouldnt run out and buy a Kogan TV at normal price, just wait on ozbargain for a deal of the right size and just keep an eye out on JB hifi for a tv and read the reviews. (I have bought some Kogans in the past and they had very average sound) Just looking at the last month you can see what I mean (see posts below)

That said, if you keep an eye for any tv deal even if for bigger tvs deals, typically there are also deals for smaller at tjhe same time.

Finally, if you can get a smart tv with something like google tv inbuilt saves you getting an external device for streaming.

    • I am actually thinking between 40 to 50”. My first thought is the bigger the better. Will drop by JB to check out the 40” to see how it feels to the eyes.

I have a smallish bedroom and 55 inch feels perfect. What would be more perfect would be 80 inch though. Wall to wall would be even more perfecter. Because they can be mounted to the wall TVs can never be too big.

    • So you like to have to keep turning your head and eyes to look at different parts of the screen?

      • THX standard recommends 40 degree viewing angles, so yes.

  • If you are looking at the lower range of a budget, and looking at 55", try second hand.

https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/st-kilda-west/tvs/samsung-se… looks ok, and might be near you?

I wouldn't go for a Kogan personally. They seem to be OK, but ultimately something I'd be looking to replace soon.

40" max. It's a bedroom. Not a theatre. That size TV is not 'small' as the over the top TV club would sell you. I'd go with Hisense. Great bang for buck. Look for something near your price range. (It might be a tad north)

To limit spend, you can add small add-on computer speaker/sub via the audio or headphone jack out to improve sound if needed.(should not need to)

Here's one generic review of current model

    • 40" max might be good for you but plenty of us have bigger tvs and enjoy them. It depends on bedroom size and preference.

I'm factoring in sleep expert advice. And long term impacts. Your eyes and brains need a break. But hey.Good for you

        • What?

Im going to be pretty confident in saying there have been 0 studies in this and long term impacts of size differences in tv and your sleep expert is / was talking out their arse, and watching a slightly smaller tv isnt going to give your eyes and brains any more restful experience.

@Franc-T: Oh excuse me (and physics) Photons. The sum of them. But sure. Big fat bombardment of light same, same.

            • @Protractor: Thats suprious argument as the amount of light is only one factor (Distance of tv to watcher, what and when tv is viewed, viewers eyesight etc).

My issue isnt about watching tv at night, its your assertion is that 40" is the max due to sleep expert without evidence.

                @Franc-T: Suprious?
                Spurious

The point is sleep experts advise against screens before sleep, period.
If you fill your eyes with bright flashing light pre sleep, it's 'bad for you'. Take that as true or not. Also take the fact that more of a harmful dose of pre snooze light, is worse, than less (or none) or leave it. My '40' max' was not sleep expert advice it was my opinion. ergo, don't bombard yourself with a giant screen before zzzzzs. 40" is plenty big enough to stuff your sleep and eyes.

I had a 65inch in the bedroom, it was too big.

    I think 40inch is fine.

I'd get something other than Kogan.

Honestly, no TV in the bedroom is a better idea.
