Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX6000 Wi-Fi 6 Router $399 + Delivery @ PLE Computers

370

Virtually identical to the Asus RT-AX88U PRO, but cheaper and with added RGB!
Wall mounting option is also a positive for this version.
Review/comparison HERE.

I price matched with JB HIFI via chat, as I'm not in Vic.

Note, this is not wifi 6e. So not the latest and greatest, but should still be a solid step up over your ISP provided router

  • Hmm very tempting at this price… Also is compatible with AiMesh which is a big tick if I ever wanted to go down that path…

  • +3

I have this unit and it's big asf, FYI if size matters. I revert to basic/general UI using Merlin as I hate the gaming theme.

    • +1

+1 for this unit and price!
They are a big boy, but got everything you'd want & full bars of reception eveywhere in an apartment. Just got it sitting on the floor.

May have a look for the UI changer in the settings, don't really care for the red and black theme either.
I installed Merlin too but it still has the Rog Rapture theme. Loaded up diversion and Skynet, pretty good.

      • +1

When you do a merlin FW update, you have to choose rog_nand_squashfs or just nand_squashfs to swap between the interfaces. The latest beta 3004_388.4_beta3_nand_squashfs.pkgtb is pretty solid if you want to upgrade and change over.

        • Hi I was about to reply to clarify that - Ah just as i suspected, it is dependant on which install file i choose.

          I installed the GT-AX6000_388.2_2_rog_nand_squashfs.pkgtb

Should I have installed 'GT-AX6000_388.2_2_nand_squashfs.pkgtb' for the basic UI?

May look at the beta you suggested. Cheers,

          • +1

@G-rig: Yes, that file will give you the 'basic' UI. I also started on the ROG interface merlin updates but swapped as it is too 'busy' and in the way.

I will add that the new update will require you to manually turn off and on the router (It will say when to do this). So not as seamless as the older updates. You should be fine flashing the same version, just the other interface overtop of the current one.

            • @TeamFox: no worries- flashing the beta of the non-ROG one now so should be ok :)
              Edit: All done!

  • Great router. Was looking for 88u replacement.

Thanks for the heads up OP! Let's see if I can use my JB hi-fi perks voucher!

  • +2

I'm using this at home in an AiMesh connected to Gigabit NBN, been fantastic so far. Looks completely absurd (like some sort of Protoss Nexus) but it's kind of growing on me.

    • Word of warning, it is quite sizable, check the dimensions before purchasing!

  • @tlaw82 did you get Jb-Hifi to price match $399. The chat I'm on with Jb-hifi is matching the price inc postage so $415 :P even click and collect? As I am also not based in Vic

    • +1

Yes, JB hi-fi price matched at $399 for me, with click and collect as an option.
Might be dependent on the chat member?

      • Thanks tlaw82 i'll jump back again and see if I can get lucky

  • these are a must if you have kids that hog the net and your online games suffer bad ping :)

not to mention you can disable their devices easily too!

  • Esports level router, great price!

  • A very basic question from someone who just knows router to plug in, but uses a lot of devices in the house (shared between kid's online classes and work form home setup) - Is this good to buy or an overkill ?
As of now I use TP-LINK Ac1200 ISP provided one but seeing the signal is weak in HALL area and kids room (it is also getting dropped frequently).

Can someone share some expertise please.

    • +1

Yes, you’ll notice a significant difference.

I had a similar modem to you, ac1200, wifi was sporadic at best, took the plunge and bought the GT AX 6000, as others have said it is large, but it sits on top of a filing cabinet type thing in the middle of my house with a Gigabit connection and the WiFi is brilliant anywhere in my house I can get 300 to 600 Mbps, even outside in the driveway. So glad I bought it.

      • Thanks a lot Gregmond. Appreciate you sharing feedback on personal experience. Bought it :)

  • Price matched easily over the phone with JB, thanks OP!

    • Yes also got JB pricematch on chat (guessing half the 24 queue in front of me was ozb).

  • This is absolute beast in every way (size, performance, features). Have this since almost a year now on 1gig fibre and can't fault it. Have around 40+ devices and no drop outs in any way. I have separate 2.4ghz guest network running on it for all iot/smart devices. I highly recommend it. Not a fan of red theme as well, planning to install merlin soon.

    • How much is the 1G plan per month btw?

      • +1

Well I am NZ based so might not be useful to you. But around $75/month

        • Thats how much we pay for 25/1.

Stupid politicians stuffed up our fibre roll out.

          • +1

@hothed: Tangerine is AU$69.90 for 50/17. I'm currently on 1G fibre with them for $79 / month through a deal I found. The deal lasts 6 months but then I'll go down to 200/20 for $89 a month

    • That's not the justification for cost, I have over 50 devices on my network and the old ac68u never complained, same as the $129 ax series.

      • Maybe. I get around 500mb/s speed on my phones, tablets across whole house. I have no issues with running 3-4 4k netflix/youtube connections simultaneously and still don't see any lag. Agreed I have 1gig connection, but serving that bandwidth across devices at a peak level does count. And it has 2 2.5gbe ports which is very useful to extend the network further if you have local network which can support it. I have nas connected on that port to get maximum bandwidth for local plex streaming.

Additional, 2 orbi unit = 1 asus is a win for me. Range is way better so I will say yes. But everyone has different views so YMMV

    • Is guest mode more locked down? Got smart devices also that use 2.4Ghz but have done nothing fancy yet.
As long as the google home stuff still works may look into it.
Router level adblocker is cool andd just got rid of the ROG (gaming) theme on the web UI.

      • Yes. I don't have it broadcast the ssid as well. Once setup it all works fine. don't have google home. Got eufy cams, echos, robot vacuum, garage door etc. There is nothing fancy at router level. I use home assistant for most of it.

        • No worries, probably good to lock it down a bit more. A few of my devices are server logins (like Xiami fan, Grid Connect or Smart Home etc). I worked out a whlie ago if you change the network names (ssid) then it's a pain setting up all the devices again when you change routers etc.

          • @G-rig: Lock it down how?

            • +1

@ace310: don't know, just sounded fancy whatever you were doing with the guest network, but it sounds exactly the same without broadcasting the ssid for 2.4GHz.

              • +1

@G-rig: Couple of things you can do to further lock it down which I can think of. Maybe there is more.
                1. Run vpn on it
                2. Have bandwidth limiter

      • +3

@G-rig @ace310 To lock down further you can isolate clients with a VLAN.

This link says VLAN is available in firmware version 3.0.0.6.102_21514.

  • Does anyone know much aboutt his vs the RT-AX89X for $90 more?
    AX89X has 10GB, SFP and 4 more 1GB ports

    https://www.mwave.com.au/product/asus-rtax89x-ax6000-dual-ba…?

    https://dongknows.com/asus-gt-ax6000-vs-rt-ax89x-an-excellen…

    • +1

Only if have network to utilize 10Gbps SFP+ port. Plus ax89 has fan so it can be loud where as 6000 doesn't. Yes 4 additional lan can be useful but nothing wrong in getting $20 switch if at all you need it.

  • Another reputable reviewer: https://www.mbreviews.com/asus-rog-rapture-gt-ax6000-wifi-6-…
No real upgrade for anyone who already has the AX86U. I still have the payment link and not sure if I should proceed.
The design is very obnoxious and the size of it is quite comical. I can see it looking perfectly fine with a gaming setup however (which I do not have).

    • +1

Don't bother if you already own the RT-AX86U.

      • What about the RT-AX88U?

I guess I should wait for the 6E model equivalent, but they won't be on sale any time soon.

        • +2

Same deal, it's not an upgrade (identical internals).

        • +2

Keep the RT-AX88U. Your next router will have Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7.

    • Hey P3r514n, are you based in SYD? if so can I get the payment link? I can DM for the link i'm still using AC88u :P

      • Hi mate, I'm in VIC. I would have shared the link (even for VIC folk) however, it asks for my mobile number to "make sure it's me" and displays all my personal details in the cart. The only thing I can think of is purchasing it for someone and addressing it to them but that also comes with an element of trust.

        • +1

All good p3r514n no good for me since i'm based in SYD they are catching up and including postage. I'll sit out and wait for another deal

  • Is the price hike at RRP between a TP-Link and an Asus router worth it?

    • Hell no. It’s astonishing that no one bats an eyelid for the AXE75 but will go crazy for ASUS routers with some flashing RGB lights 🤷‍♂️

      • +1

        flashing RGB lights

Those RGB lights reduces the perceived latency when gaming.

  • I am so annoyed I missed this!
