64gb Steam Deck with a DIY SSD upgrade to 1 or 2 TB is the best bang for buck value. The SD is extremely upgradable and easy to self repair, and has a heap of great software plugins as well. Can finally get through all the games I've gotten in Steam sales over the years and never touched.

    • +2

I got mine in the last deal. 2TB plus 1GB sdcard.

      its a brilliant little device

      • Yeah same. Great there was an OzB post for the exact HDD needed, shortly after the SD deal was posted. It's actually better than I expected, with all the customisation and plugin options available. It works perfectly even for things like streaming from my Plex server.

My Afterpay maxes out at $600, anyone know if you can mix it with an eBay giftcard and still have the discount code work?

    • yes you can.

      • Sweet, ty!

  • come on under 600 will be magic

    • +3

      RRP is 399 USD

      Currently 625.20 AUD

Doubt we will see USA RRP, let alone below it by a significant amount.
      Especially because of GST.

      • valve refurbs are $319 and were just available last week which might eventually come in and get to around $550 sometime in the future?

        • +2

Refurbished isn't the same as new though.

    • +1

Anything under 650 is near ATL.

Next best price after $400 Kogan cc

    • What?

      • +2

Probably referring to churning the Kogan black credit card. Which depending on what bonus offer they have available at the time gives you $300-500 in Kogan credit. And Kogan sell steam decks.

        • +2

Yer just looked, you need to spend $3000 first up

        • yep, this

          • @Johnny L: Yer it’s good but I’m not gonna speed $3k atm. Have too many CC too hahah

  • +4

    399 USD = $625 AUD

    625 + GST = $687.50

  • I'm considering getting one for my girlfriend. I've built her a pc but she doesn't really have space for it cause she prioritising her space for sewing instead.

Issue is… I don't wanna buy her one if she's not going to use it haha.

    • +4

Honestly, don't surprise people with expensive gifts if you have no idea whether they'll use them. You'll only end up disappointed. If you have a SD yourself, let her have a go for a bit and see if she gets hooked or not.

      • +2

She likes it. But just like how she likes a gaming pc, it's a different story if she wants to play it long term haha

        • Yeah fair enough, hopefully she'll get a lot of use out of whatever you wind up getting.

    • +3

Rig out the sewing machine instead.

      • Haha pimp my ride, tailored to your needs edition.

        • Pimp my sewing machine? Lol

Is this shop on eBay safe to go through?

What happens with the warranty within the year of the store goes bust? Does ebay help out?

    • Well, given that they're going strong almost 6 years after someone else asked that on ozb I think they're pretty safe (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/331875)

Ebay is a marketplace, they won't help with anything if you're a year into your purchase.
You'd have to go through…whatever the appropriate government agency is.

      Their ABN is ABN 21 605 576 574

      • In that case would it be safer and better to buy at a higher price from Kogan?

        • +1

Well in terms of chances of shutting down, kogan is less likely, but I don't think either of them are even close to the possibility.
          Up to you.

        • Kogan can still be a pain to deal with too, they'd likely be a bit easier but nothing like jbhifi or Officeworks for how good they are with returns.

          • +1

@lancesta: Yer I’m still on the fence to get one or not. I have all the consoles as I’m a console gamer and don’t own a PC. Was thinking this Steam Deck tho it plays PC games it would be like the closest thing to a console

But worried about getting games that don’t work on it

  • I was a doubting Thomas but not anymore. Steam Deck is a very wise investment indeed.

  • Just in case anyone didn't know, you can get the steam deck really cheap with the kogan black credit card when they have the $500 gift card promotion - I combo'd with discounted gift cards and credit and only paid $70 out of pocket (down from $769)

    • Sorry i might be a bit of simp, but can you explain this a little more?

Get the kogan black card, do the spend to get the credit and buy the steam deck? But only they have it at $500 not $300?

      • Yeah not worth getting the Kogan card unless they have the $400/500 credit offer imo. As it's a once in a lifetime bonus for that card that you can't get again in 12/18months like most credit card bonus offers.

    • +2

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/784275

Probably a better offer at the moment seeing as Kogan is at $300 for now. Plus the minimum spend is a lot lower/easier. 120k NAB reward points converts to $600 in eBay/Amazon/JB. Probably others idk. I just bought an induction cooktop and tool storage cabinet with my $500 Kogan credit cuz I'm old and boring now.

      • Thanks for the heads-up. Can you cancel the card and skip the annual fee after taking advantage of the points?

        • I did read some people in there were able to meet the minimum quick enough to get the points and cancel, I'm a slowpoke tho.

    • Just in case you didn't know, just refinance your mortgage, and get like $4k bonus. You can buy a few steamdecks and not be out of pocket.

  • Price is back to 799, so $699 with discount

    • it's almost like its organized price increases, because there was 1-2 other sellers around the same price, just $1-2 higher, and they ALL increased price at the same time.

      • Damn

        • Back in stock at 786 (so 686 with afterpay code)

  • Bought one last deal, just replaced the SSD and now whenever I'm not in a game (browsing library or desktop mode) after 5 to 10 minutes the screen will freeze for a few seconds, then turn black (but illuminated) and stays that way unresponsive until I kill it. Soo… any chance anyone has any advice? A quick ssd test in terminal seems to return fine, may reimage later tonight.

    • I don't have one nor have any experience with one but yeah I'd be hitting up an os reimage first and foremost for a device like this. Let me know how you go

      • sure thing, will just commit to a reimage now

      • gracias, if a reimage doesn't work I'll ask for help

        • I’d ask straight up first

    • what SSD did you replace with and how much paid?

where did you get the SSD?

Check the first comment too, someone mentions a troubleshooting guide to resetting your GPU

  • No afterpay but keeping an eye, next ebay plus good deal I guess

  • Can you still pay the entire thing with eBay gift cards and skip afterpay?

    • I'm pretty sure you have to pay at least some of it with afterpay.

  • Suggestion on the ssd to buy?

    • +2

Got the 2TB from this deal. One of the recommended ones for the SD. The Sabrent Rocket is also a popular one, but also more expensive I believe.
