A tad cheaper than this deal on the 1TB variant of the WD SN740 M.2 2230 SSD that's suitable for use with the Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, Surface Pro 9, X, Surface Laptop 3, 4, Go and Surface Book 3.

The 2TB drive can be had for US$135.19 (~A$203.58) on the same listing, however it's not the cheapest price it has previously been.

Since this is a Gen4 SSD you shouldn't use it with the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Pro 7+ due to stability issues. Both of these have no issues with Gen3 SSDs.

  • Price is for 1TB not 2TB

      Yeah that's what I meant.

  • If you have some coins, this one is a tad cheaper :) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005699663004.html

Even better. Unfortunately due to the low seller feedback it can't be shared as a deal :(

  • 1TB is only a small upgrade on the Rog Ally, but a huge upgrade for the cheaper Steam Decks. Esp the 64GB model floating around. I haven't received my 1TB MicroSD card yet though so want to see if that is enough for me without having to open my rog ally up.

    • How is the ally? I want to get one but im a xbox gamer not pc. I do have pc but just prefer console gaming so i dont have many games on pc.

      • +1

The ROG ally has the same controller layout as the XBX controller, which is what I use for games on my PC. Im just playing most of those free Epic games/Amazon Games/GOG/Steam games that i have, and something like the AC franchise is great. I feel its not as easy to aim on the ROG Ally than using the XBX controller. I really like it, and the fact I can use it as a windows machine with one USB-C plug is part of the reason why I got it.

      • My most use case is remote play Series X, and ps5 on ally. Windows xbox app let you stream console and i just use that, I finished gears 4 and gears 2, curranty playing gun grave. just make sure you have good wifi router. i m very happy with mine, i also use moonlight take advantage of120hz vrr. You can also use cloud streaming on xbox app which is really impressive.

        • Remote streaming can be done on my phone. I wouldn’t buy ally for remote play.

          • @Jklaro: I got it for the trips or when i away from home. but its just what i m doing mostly rn and i am definitely happy with my purchase, But I agree with you, don't spend money it just for remote play. A razer kishi controller on phone is more than enough.

  • There is no stock.

      There's 323 left.

      • Have you tried actually clicking buy now?

        • +1

Yes it takes me straight to checkout.

          • @Clear: Did you try changing to 1Tb instead of the 256gb? Then you'll see this:

"Sorry, some items are not available. Please edit your order."

            • @demiurge: Yes. You're definitely shipping to Australia and not using a VPN?

              • -1

@Clear: Yep. Click checkout and you'll see they are out of stock.

                • @demiurge: Not out of stock. Works for me. Have you set your country properly for your account? All sizes showing as in stock.

These WD drives aren’t recommended for the Steam Deck as they require more voltage and will impact the longevity of your deck or worst case scenario damage it.

Do some googling there are a lot of threads on this.

And carrots give you night vision. It's disappointing people are still believing that false fact from last year.

      • -1

It’s not false, see my comment to DangerNoodle below.

They run from the same voltage, this is a 3.3V. it's standard for nvme SSD. It does say it's rated for 2.5A which is more current, only issue from this would be more heat and a possible reduction in battery life, but you can pick up a cheap heatsink from AliExpress while you're there.

      • Always get volts and amps confused. It’s the amperage that’s the issue. With concerns that it’s 2.5A draw over the stock 1A “May” lead to overheating. Not sure the SSD’s have been around long enough for us to see definitive results. Just feel people should be informed before investing, was not posting to fear monger. I read a bunch before my upgrade and while it may be a slim possibility of an issue I went with a 2TB Micron unit (Yes also 3.3V at 2.5A but at the time of my purchase more of these were in use and more universally received at that time).

The most important thing when installing the new SSD (as per the instructions) is disconnecting the battery and removing the SD card before inserting the SSD. People who haven't done this have shorted and killed the SSD and/or the Deck.

The Steam Deck NVMe slot it turns out is only Gen3 so it'll be running the Gen4 SSD at Gen3 speeds and thus less power.

            This makes 100% sense

NB disconnect battery and remove SSD before removing old SSD!

This has been debunked hundreds of times. But the misinformation remains everywhere. There are a huge amount of casual users in the sd subreddit and forums who aren’t knowledgeable enough to be making conclusive statements.

I’ve tested power draw with lab equipment to actually tell you it’s not an issue on top of everything, as well as done battery life testing.

Peak power draw is only very slightly higher, still perfectly well within specifications. Total peak power draw is around 1w higher under burst loads.

Basically the amperage increase doesnt matter, you’re not considering this under a function of time. These drives don’t hit peak power draw for very long, it’s in the nano seconds according to the data sheet.

Battery life is also the same after doing a standardised game test comparing oem and the sn740 2tb. Within margin of error.

If you want anecdotal proof too, there are hundreds of thousands of users using the sn740, and there are zero ssd deaths attributed to switching to them over the oem drives.

If what you’re suggesting was problematic, we would see issues across the internet.

You also said these haven’t been out for long enough, what are you talking about my dude?
They’ve been out for over 12 months now. You might not have been aware of them is all.

I can keep going on with more and more information pertaining to why this isn’t an issue. Please stop spreading misinformation.

  • What's the issue with surface pro 7+?

    • Randomly freezes. Seems there's a compatibility issue with Gen4 SSDs.

    • I posted about issues I faced here.

However, since making the outlined changes I haven't faced the same stability issues. I use the device daily and it's been perfectly stable with the drive 👌

      • Same speads as the sabrent rocket? I've heard it's stable and quick…

Thanks a lot OP, grabbed a 2TB to go with Steam Deck I just ordered as well.

    • +1

Good for you. I might go for a micro sd card for the time being for my recently ordered SD as well.

      • Haha, cheers. Yeah hopefully Micro SD will also do the trick.

  • For some reason I get a message advising that this item is not available in my location.

      Are you using a VPN?

      • Can't believe I didn't think about the Pixel VPN. Thank you! I feel stupid. 😅
