    Regret booking unrefundable jetstar…..

  • +11

For MEL at least, old planes, high prices. My last flight to HND was 4 hours late, fun ($$) getting to your hotel at 1am with no public transport. Never again.

    • +10

same for syd, much better off taking JAL or ANA who fly fresh, nice metal on this route.

more legroom/wider seats, better food, wifi, and you still get qantas points+status via JAL / virgin etc on ANA.

      • +1

I just wanted to ask if QAN is still using that EXTREMELY old plane for the leg from Syd to HND? I did it once in 2017 (iirc), holy the plane was so old….

        • SYD>HND is A330-300 still, yep - sometimes even A330-200! It's the ~2015 refurbished interior, which is fine, but definitely not the best product.
Most of the metal is 10-20 years old. Not ancient, but wholly uncompetitive considering the age of their competitor's products…

        • +2

QF25/26 was operated by the 747 until covid, you'll either get an A330 (still old, but not quite as old) or I believe a 787-9 (much newer) has been scheduled once HND goes double daily later this year.

      • Well technically, the Qantas A330 would have wider seats than ANA's 787 (9-abreast 787 is really narrow), although of course ANA has a lot more legroom. The IFE on Qantas is also a bit better than either Japanese carrier.

Otherwise though, I agree one should fly JAL or ANA on Australia to Japan routes instead of Qantas if the price is comparable.

The Qantas Dreamliner is available once daily from Sydney though, starting (I think) November. Would still pick JAL over this though.

    • +1

MEL won't be going to HND soon, it'll be back to NRT. SYD will get twice daily to HND.

    • When did you fly though? I know its the A330 but I believe they're the newer ones now.

      • +2

Qantas doesn't have any "newer" a330. Their newest is 2015 while their oldest is 2003 and theres no telling which aircraft will be at the gate between the a330s.

        • +1

IIRC all the international A330's are the 2015 refurbs which use similar seats to their B787's. Economy are pretty good seats which I've flown a few times to Tokyo & Beijing in reasonable comfort.

      • May 2023.

  • +5

Mel Tokyo was $664 pre COVID
For $1000+, I definitely fly with JAL, not qf.

  • +20

Better fly with ANA or JAL, even with higher price. Qantas should be the last option for all international trip.

    • Why? I have found Qantas fine. Last time I flew the food was excellent.

    • Thought this was ozbargain, not ozpickyaboutflights

      • +15

JAL is $10 extra and ANA is $30 less expensive right now.

They have minimal cost (<$20) add-on for stopover domestic flights in Japan for option of an open jaw journey. This provides cost savings relative to Shinkansen prices or otherwise eliminates exposure to the JR Pass price hike. There are also limitless flight options regardless of time, including overnight as there is no curfew.

Both have newer aircraft (operating 787-9s), better legroom and seat pitch (JAL still operates a 2-4-2 configuration), better customer service on the ground and in the air, better food, more reliable departure and arrival times, in-flight Wifi. Unless IFE is a make-or-break - QF is marginally better - or you have preference for QF frequent flyer points, it's a no brainer.

It's also worth noting that a single return flight on ANA grants enough miles for a free domestic flight in Japan outside of peak season.

Even optional extras like seat selection are completely free of charge on ANA and JAL. With Qantas, you have to pay $40 per leg.

        • +1

JAL also include 2x 23KG checked luggage, plus carry on. Great if you’re planning to bring stuff back, as many people do.

        • +4

The 2-4-2 config on JAL is overlooked all the time, but is such a great selling point.

          • +1

@ryefig: Agree, it's not far off Qantas premium economy ..

          • +1

@ryefig: Yeah this has sold me on booking my flight there for Jan lol.

    • Even compared to Jetstar? albeit using the dreamliner

    • Agreed - QF long haul in my experience doesn't hold a candle to most Asian or Middle Eastern carriers.

  • Way better than 737 virgin plane

  • +1

    Any good Bris prices?

    • +1

I have updated to include flights from Brisbane

      • Thank you! Some good prices.

  • Not sure if I’m missing something but all the Syd flights I’ve checked have been more like $950 minimum. Have the flights already gone up in value since posting this?

    • The prices quoted by OP are from third-party online travel agents. Booking direct will be more expensive, but generally the safer option.

    • +1

Apologies, that was my fault - I made mistake when I added the Brisbane fares. You should see $889 fares from Sydney now.

      • All good, thanks for your help!

  • +5

Vote NO… Fly with another carrier… Especially ones that gives a premium service for the price instead of an overpriced Jetstar.

    • +5

I've burnt all my Qantas points and will stick to the middle eastern carriers now. Qantas is doing the old back pat for a government that gifts it taxpayer millions and and protects it from competition (See the Qatar airlines debacle).

Also, I am not taking on a conscious, personable level from a company that goes after it's workers as hard as Qantas does, and has it's hands out for my tax dollars. It's not forever to Qantas from me.

      • +1

I don't mind boycotting Qantas but I wonder if going to the Middle Eastern carriers of all things is any better from a anti-government protection or pro-labour relations point of view.

  • Adelaide Qantas flights aren't so good for Tokyo - usually an overnight stop in Sydney.

  • F QF

  • Anyone know if the 30kg of luggage from qantas can be divided within 2 bags, or are you stuck with 1 heavy bag?

    • +4

i felt very charitable this morning so i looked it up for you with a 5 second google

      https://www.qantas.com/au/en/travel-info/baggage/checked-bag…

For tickets issued with an allowance in kilograms only, there is no restriction on the number of pieces within the weight allowance for international travel.

How to calculate total dimensions of your checked baggage
Total dimensions for each piece must not exceed 158cm (62in). Dimensions for checked baggage are calculated by adding together the width, height and depth of the piece of baggage.

so yes you can :) have a nice day!

  • +1

no BNE direct flights on sale as they don't want to be the same price/cheaper than jetstar on the exact same route.

so you have to fly via Singapore.

I hate you so much Qantas

  • Combine with Webjet offer, for example, Perth to Tokyo $900 becomes $803.39 (even after Webjet fees)

  • Do any lines go dirrect to Osaka from Sydney?
