  • Is it worth spending a few hundred extra on an a80j/k equivalent?

    • +4

Absolutely, but the 55" A80K is not a few hundred extra.

    • Doubt you'll find any left. The A80L is out and they sold as much of their j/k stock first.

    • 100%. Both other commenters are correct in that it's more than a couple hundred bucks more expensive and stock is low since it's an old model. Hear me out, the 55 inch A80J is available on Sony's official eBay store for around $1500. The catch being that they are sold as refurb units. I ordered a 77 inch a couple days ago and based on the reviews, I suspect that Sony is selling un-opened, leftover stock as "Box Damaged" or "Seconds" to make room for new units. They carry the same warranty. Give it a look, if the reviews are right then you could score a cracker of a deal.

I remember seeing some concerns a few months ago about cashback for price matched items. I definitely remember seeing it appear in the cashrewards ineligibility list but it's no longer there. I would be cautious that it might come back with boosted cashback promotions.

In saying that I've received cashback for price matched items last year.

  • Yeah CR added a disclaimer for stores a few months ago stating

Purchases using any type of discount which lowers price advertised on the Merchant site, including but not limited to employee discounts, student discounts and price-matching

But as commented here the fact they later removed it from Sony implies it is allowed (despite many people still reporting their orders don't track and manually getting it approved via support)

  • Should I go for full array or mini led ? oled is out of budget as it starts at above 2k for 55 plus screens

    • +1

      Mini LED > FALD.

      • +1

The miniLED are far superior than any of these fald sets, go look at some in the shops before you spend the money. It's free to view them in the shops

      • Not necessarily. Its all about the algorithms. Sony has best algorithms for dimming control. Only higher end mini led tvs can beat Sonys Full Array x90.

But in theory Mini LED should be better than Full Array, but it is relatively new tech, still working out the bugs so to speak

    • Bought two 55” oled, one for $1500 and the other for $1800 over the last two years. I wouldn’t touch this lcd at this price

      • +1

Considering what the 55” S95B and A80J were going for (I purchased both), It’s not an amazing price. Having said that, that was several months ago and doesn’t really help anyone who needs a TV today.

        • Yeah I'm bummed I didn't get the S95B back when it was circa $1500 - patiently waiting again

    • +1

Still using my $1195 Hisense 55PX (OLED) from the sales at Christmas 2019. Other than the ABC news logo being slightly burnt into the bottom right corner, it’s been ace!

Don’t think I could go back to a regular LED tv (MiniLED maybe?)

      • Yikes, I could never live with the burn in. I have a C9 and am so paranoid worried about burn in. Given a choice I'd pick miniLED over OLED just to avoid the burn in. The trade-off in picture quality is worth it IMO.

        • To be fair on the tv, I watch a lot of abc news (it’s usually just playing in the background during the day for ambient noise while I’m WFH) - and it’s now 5 years old - it’s taken a long time, but it’s definitely there. There’s also some (super) faint banding along the bottom where I presume the news ticker sits.

I’ve not tried to make a claim with Hisense.

I’m usually really obsessive about this kind of thing, but I’ve somehow come to live with it. You can only see it on a completely white screen… in normal viewing it’s not there. Happy to send you a pic for reference if you’re actually interested

          • @jackary: Yes mate, am just saying the fact you can have a burn at 5 years and these LCD TVs not have these issue, the miniLED are an excellent choice given the trade off in minor picture quality. My C9 OLED is from 2019 as well and is as good as the day I got it because I turn it on sparingly and use my old LCD for everyday use. I do this just to avoid the burn in.

Also OLEDs are not great in brighter rooms, so best way for prospective buyer is to go to the shops and observe. Yes it's factory settings but still gives you a good frame of reference to compare various tech for free

Video killed the radio star, and judging by the comments, it has executed the search engine ,as well.

Bought this for $2300 back in november. Its a quality set.

    • Same size? If so, you’re a lot calmer than I would be 😂

      • +3

Oh yes, 55". I mean its annoying I spent that much dont get me wrong. But at the time I'd spent $1900 on the 60" version, but after 3 days of arguing iwth my dad that the wall CAN hold it with a well mount, I decided to just throw it in and exchange it for the 55", which was an extra 400. So I've already had my rage last year. I'm raged out :D

        • +1

Got mine for $2000 August last year on sale from Harvey Norman, well $2400 including 4 years of their product care. Seen it listed considerably cheaper elsewhere just a few weeks after so I know how annoying it is, thankfully in my case I was fine since I really only had to spend $500 as the other $1900 was in HN store credit from claiming product care on my 4 year old X90F that died.

The X90K is definitely a great set though, I've had zero issues with it.

People talk about OLED as if they are universally better - lots suffer black crush, none are good in bright rooms, most do not get anywhere near as bright as FALD/miniLED for HDR, most will progressively dim extended bright scenes, all can suffer burn in (as someone mentioned above) and they can lose brightness over their lifetime.

Not saying OLED are bad, but FALD/miniLED are excellent options in many scenarios and usually much cheaper.

    • +1

Absolutely, having owned an LCD and a flagship OLED. looking to purchase a miniLED for my media room for this very reason

    • Yeah I think if you have the enough budget, then it's better to:

      1. buy OLED for bedroom considering it is usually darker comparing to living room;
      2. buy miniLED for living room for best HDR experience
    • +1

Samsung have remedied peak brightness and black crush with the QD-OLED. What you’re referring to are OLED’s of the past. The technology has vastly improved since LG released their WOLED.

      • Yes and the Samsung 55" S90C QD-OLED costs $3295 at JB today, Samsung 55" S95C is $3995 which is 3-4x the cost of this deal. I would hope something that expensive is better.

        • -2

What does have anything to do with what you just about OLED’s?

          • -1

@Maths Debater: Because the price equivalent OLED that people are suggesting to buy instead of this deal do suffer all the issues I mentioned. I thought that was obvious and I didn't have to spell it out.

            • +1

@lunchbox99: Well yeah, you’ll need to spell it out because you haven’t referenced what you’re claiming now in your original post.

              • -3

@Maths Debater: Not my fault you're having trouble keeping up. And in any case, bright room performance and peak brightness of miniLED and FALD is still better than QD-OLED anyway.

                • -2

@lunchbox99: Lol ok mate, the words of someone who gets wrecked then suddenly defensive. LED is no match for OLED so stop spreading misinformation.

                  • -3

@Maths Debater: Hey guys, don't buy a $1099 TV… news flash you can spend 3 to 4x as much and it's better in many ways, as long as you're not using it in a bright room. genius.

Maybe you should start a thread how a Ferrari is better than a Suzuki Jimny, providing you don't want to go off road. You can publish it in the journal of obvious things.

                    • -2

@lunchbox99: Before you make such bold claims, either do your research first or be clear in your post. The fact is, you got schooled and suddenly went on defence mode. It’s ok, we all make mistakes.

      • IIRC, the latest G3 or S95C still have poor 100% peak brightness, around 200 nits

And flagship miniLED would be like 700 nits+

I would say overall OLED (including the latest panel) is better, but it should because of the price tag. And it is not better in all scenarios.

        • You’re correct, but when will you ever need 700+ nits in a 100% window?

          • @Maths Debater: Large flame or explosion, that might be not a usual thing but definitely has its scenarios.

And it should be not only the 100% max brightness, 50% or 25% max brightness are similar.

  • I see the A80K 55" $1899 on Sony's website. Is that good?

Been on and off looking for that bargain TV for PS5 & Xbox Series. These days the market is more saturated and I don't know what's a good TV anymore. Should have bought that C1 years ago around $1k
