What kind of videocard you need to drive this?

    • +1

      If not gaming doesn't matter.

      • +7

Not sure why you're getting downvoted, technically you're correct. If the card/onboard can do 4k it will handle this with ease for desktop use. So anything from the past few years shouldn't be a problem.

      Hi @cristtos

I have a 3060 but havent done any real gaming. Did load Diablo 4 and seems totally fine.

      Watch this blokes videos:
      https://www.youtube.com/@zWORMzGaming/playlists

He tests various graphics cards on various games going through different settings and resolutions.
Watching the 3060 videos ultimately made me feel comfortable buying this screen.

This screen is under 4k and the you-tuber demonstrated cypberpunk on medium to high settings at 4k - that would be good enough for me (never played cyberbunk)

      PS
It works totally fine on my crappy work laptop, via DisplayPort and/or HDMI at full resolution. Clearly I dont play games on that thing. Productivity is fine. I dont do any graphics work or anything.

      • So is since dual Quad resolution is this a 4K monitor?, since Cyberpunk states "you-tuber demonstrated cypberpunk on medium to high settings at 4k", love to know

Edit: got it so basically total resolution is technically same as 4K actually maybe higher 5K

So question,.. does one need to use both DP, Display Ports into this monitor from ones Graphics card like a dual screen setup for this to work?

Well certainly has lots of realestate as a 4K monitor, so yes dual QHD so what's that in s sense, 2x 24.5 inch monitors, side by side, which is total 49 incher, what width wise?

Is "Picture-by-Picture" for each input port, 2x DP's and HDMI port?

        • +6

I think it’s closer to the dimensions of 2x 27” monitors

        • Each port can be used for either a single full screen or two split screens at a time

      • +1

You can play Diablo IV on this thing full screen?

        • +7

No you can't. It will go to 3440 x 1440 p. Blizzard is notorious for not supporting wider resolutions since they see it as an "advantage"

          • +2

@GossipGoat: why put advantage in quotations? it does give an advantage. also wow supports ultrawide

            • @Kozhutki: Yes but so does better graphics cards etc.

          • @GossipGoat: I'd have to agree with them that it's an advantage. So it just makes it like a centred 27" monitor with black bars on the side?

I've seen videos where they play League of Legends on 32:9, would like to give it a crack just out of interest. I think amateurs can play whatever resolution on that but they make the pros use 1080P only.

            • @bleeder: More like a centred 34" ultrawide at 3440x1440

    • +6

Any card that supports 4K will support 5120x1440 which has fewer pixels. So even CPU onboard graphics would.

      • Is it all about the pixels? So 5120x1440 would be less demanding than 4K?

        • +2

Yes, it's basically just 2x 1440p displays side by side.

    • Depends on what you want to play

  • +2

It was this or the AOC ag493ucx2.
I'm impatient and this came up on-sale first.
The AOC has more input ports, and KVM. Good for PBP. The Samsung does not.

However, I'm using it for work right now and I'm not even using PBP - prefer to have it running at 5120x1440.

    • +7

I had the AOC and took at back after 30 min, the smearing was the worst I have ever seen on a monitor.
I learnt my lesson with VA panels, so buyer beware if you are doing any sort of gaming.

      • +1

Not all panels are created equal. My last couple of VA monitors have been great.

  • +2

Maybe price match and buy from JB? Use perks (if any) and discounted GC.

  • +5

Amazon have it for $1 cheaper (with Prime) https://www.amazon.com.au/Samsung-5K-Gaming-Monitor-LC49RG90…

    • +3

I prefer to have a shop I can drive it back to. Also I dont keep the box. imaging shipping it back if its develops an issue

      • +1

You'll probably need a truck haha

      • +5

Tip: if you ever need to ship an item back, you can contact Amazon chat and request for courier pickup instead of lugging to post office ;)

  • +2

In the mist of inflation, monitors, notebooks and SSDs hhd are keep coming down in price.

    • +21

Ahh yes, the steamy mists of inflation.

    • +4

as tech should. GPU sellers citing "inflation" are just lying.

    • Strange. I have always assumed that price of goods and services goes up during inflation. Any economist here?

      • There are both inflationary and deflationary pressures at play.

      • you might be thinking of the cause and effect wrongly. inflation is a measure of the rate of change (usually increase) of "goods and services". many things can cause this change, but inflation itself is the effect, not the cause.

      • Assuming you aren't being sarcastic, only in a vacuum. Tech goes down in cost over time due to more mature processing and better nodes, same applies to monitors.

    • Unless there is overwhelming demand, tech comes down in price as it ages, as new products are released, and as manufacturing of the technology becomes more commonplace.

Had one for awhile and if I could go back I would've got something in the 32-38" range instead. Not saying it's a bad screen, but bigger is not always better.
Demo it beforehand if possible. I paid roughly twice this amount so this is a good deal regardless if you end up liking it

    • You trying to say its to big?, ive got a standard 4K 32incher monitor and im not happy that the font is still too small for my old eyes at 100% scalling, if i had a choice I'd prefer to go bigger as I'm after the realestate with 4K more icons on Windows desktop width and height, i wonder how this dual QHD 49 incher monitor fairs realestate wise?

Is "Picture-by-Picture" for each input port, 2x DP's and HDMI port?

      • I had a 32" 4k and agree the font size in windows at 100% was on the small side. Now have a 43" 4k and it's great. About the same ppi as a 30" 2k, but with 2x the real estate and it fits better than a ultra wide screen on the desk.

        • Yeah that has been my original plan to go with a 43 inch 4K monitor well I love having the realestate so yeah I'm just gonna wait, well I like the Gigabyte AORUS FV43U 43 inch monitor but seems like the Gigabyte M32UC 31.5" 4K 160HZ 1ms Premium Pro Curved VA Gaming Monitor is a better monitor and a lot cheaper but it only comes in 32 inches which is the size i currently have, well I'm in no hurry lolz, patience is a virtue 😁

Edit: wondering which 43 inch 4K monitor you decided to go with?

          • @Italkdigital: I have a Dell u4320q. Don't do much gaming these days. More software dev and general use. It's a IPS so for gaming it's ok, no smearing like VA panels, but limited to 60 fps.

      • I've got the AOC 49" and a Phillips 32" 4K, I run my windows resolution to 125% because font on the 32" monitor is small, with the whole system running at 125% I find my text is a good size for me who sits about 500mm away from my monitors.

        • How do you find the aoc? They're 1800r aren't they? I feel they're not sharp enough and requires you to turn your head too much

          • @TheFIREnanceGuy: Sorry I didn’t even get the notification for a reply. I find it pretty sharp for what it is, even compared to my 4K and it works better with windows scaling imo. Yeah it’s 1800R, probably not super immersive but it works well for me and sim racing. It’s the same size as when I had 2 32” screens.

      • The fonts are ok on this at 1440.

Picture in Picture, you can set up as 16:9/16:9, or 21:9/11:9, and you can select whichever inputs you want.

1 with DP, and 1 with HDMI, or both DP.

    • My only observation thus far, after almost a full day working with it - the curve could be a bit tighter. But those monitors cost even more.

I'm very happy with the size. I setup a lot of fancyzones and custom snap-in boxes

  • What's the actual model number for this? Can't see anywhere on the HN site.

    • LC49RG90SSEXXY

    • I like the curve better on that one - but not for $800 more.

      • But it's also mini led VS edgelit

        • And gsync if you care about that.

  • +1

How far away from this thing do you have to sit!?

    • +4

Had a friend buy a same size 32:9 monitor, let’s just say buyers remorse is the only thing keeping him putting up with it.

    • That depends, do you identify as a chameleon? If Y: normal distance from a screen. Otherwise it's not recommended you buy this.

    • Its 70cm away from my face, give or take, and i find it comfortable.

I can see the entire thing in my field of vision, but do need to move my eyes or neck to focus on the outer sides

    • its honestly not bad after you get used to it. I have the g9 neo so maybe the more aggressive curve has a bit to do with it but I upgraded from a 21:9 and I can barely notice the difference after a while

    • +1

Not far, like a normal monitor distance, the only difference is the horizontal screen space

    • +1

I believe that the ideal distance is from my desk to your seat.

  • +11

    Thanks OP, bought 0.

    • +9

A nice saving there of $1198!

      • +2

Missed out on 1699 in savings!

  • Can you play warzone on this?

    • +2

Depends - can you play Warzone?

  • im confused is this the oddysey or previous model

    • Previous

    • The box mentions it's an Oddysey

  • +1

What do you even do with this, eat like BLT?

  • +1

    no usbc input, old model?

    • What age and virginity status does your TV-as-a-monitor suggest about you?

  • -1

I don't get such a low resolution for height, it's crazy to me.

    • +2

Hardly "such a low resolution". You need to just think about this monitor being two 27" 2560x1440 monitors fused together. IMO 1440p is a great sweet spot between quality and ease of being able to drive it.

  • +2

To anyone getting into the super-ultra wide game, you'll have a better time of you install a window management tool.

On Windows I strongly recommend PowerToys and its FancyZones tool.

If you're on Mac you'll probably want to install something like Rectangle (have been out of this game for a couple years, so there might be something newer).

    • i have 2x 27" 1440p monitors. i am starting to lean towards an ultrawide. am i crazy? i feel like with the right window management tool the ultrawide would suit me more. also running a 3070

      • Powertoys makes it incredibly easy, you can set up your own zones, and still use the Win + Arrow keys to move your windows around. 3070 is irrelevant unless you're gaming.

        • sorry, i would like to play some games on it, which is why i mentioned the 3070.

          • @mrhamez: I have a 2070S and its fine, but I don't play games that require 200FPS. i play iRacing on 100 fps, Age of Empires 4 is ok on standard gameplay, gets a bit sketchy on 400+ pop

      • No. I noticed the difference in a positive way first day using it for work. I Iove not having the bezel in the middle. I setup fancy zones (MS powertoys) to snap windows to different positions.

Installed Region To Share for MS Teams presenting
        https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/9N4066W2R5Q

3070 will be fine - I use a 3060 on my PC and intel onboard for the crappy work laptop

      • Definitely not crazy! I'm gaming on mine with a 2080Ti :)

  • +1

I had one & had to return it after a week for a few reasons. Even with a high end system (i9, 4090) it was hard to drive and maintain high frame rates in some games.
The Monitor had terrible scan lines that were very visible and distracting. The monitor also had terrible ghosting. These are very common problems for this panel and if you google them you'll find many forums talking about it.

It all comes down to how fussy you are with your picture quality.

    • My only negative so far is my crappy work laptop with the display port connection via DynaDock doesn't look right. Colours are off. I'll just have to play with it some more when I'm using it for work.

My i7 with the 3060 looks beautiful on it

  • Any reviews for this monitor or am I better off paying $2.5k for the newer model that whirlpool mentions?

    • Read all my comments above for my thoughts. It's only been 48 hours thought - since I got it.

$2.5k for a screen would be out of my budget for sure! If I had that kind of budget - I'd have looked at the odyssey G9

  • +1

Yay! Congrats welcome to the Ultra wide world!

  • +1

Totally worth buying. I've used this for over 3 years now with an initial price of $2k. No dead pixels. It's like having 3-4 monitors in one with Microsoft PowerToys (Fancy Zones tool). You can easily shuffle windows too by setting up the Win + Arrow key. Worth it from both a gaming and productivity point of view.

    • Have you calibrated the screen to make HDR look good in windows?

To me the colours just down look right

  • hi guys, anyone used this for productivity? any feedback?

    • +1

I enjoy it. I can put more item on my screen and I like using the dead centre rather than having a bezel which a dual-screen would have.

Each to their own I know, I prefer it and wouldn't go back.

      • thanks mate

  • Thanks, made me do a bit of searching and got it via Bing Lee on ebay for $100 cheaper.
Very cool, though not as massive a step up from 34" as i thought it would be!

  • Better of just buying a 42 inch lg oled TV few generations behind and spend the remainder of the money on a GPU.

The price of this monitors stupid as so phone prices.

    • Only stupid if you don't like using it

      • It's only stupid if you consider this your option, only stupid if you drink prime all day.
