      Plug in, sound goes boom

    • Here is a simple analogy that a 5 year old might understand. Imagine you have a picture of a cat that is saved on your computer. You can see the picture on your computer screen, but you can't touch it or feel it. A USB DAC is like a printer that can turn that picture into a real, physical cat that you can touch and feel.

The USB DAC doesn't change the picture itself, but it does make it possible for you to experience it in a new way. In the same way, a USB DAC doesn't change the music itself, but it does make it possible for you to hear it in a new way.

        lol it's a $35 DAC. It's not that good.

        • The "Sound Blaster" is a very well-known DAC that goes back to the late 1980's, it is the defacto standard for audio hardware. However, commoditization of PC audio hardware made them far less relevant from the early 2000's.

For $35, the main advantage of Sound Blaster devices is a high degree of out of the box compatibility, including linux.

          • @guidedlight: This particular one seems to be more of a teleconferencing type thing, the X1 would have more of a Hi-Fi application

      • You would have lost all the 5 year olds at the cat printer.

the AI overlords helped with that ELI5 ;-)

      • A DAC literally does change the music tho (well.. like an equaliser)

      • So…. about this cat….. how do I get it out of my computer?

    • It changes the 1s and 0s inside of that mp3 file (or cd) into sound that you can plug your headphones or speakers into. The better it is, the better the sound that comes from the mp3 or cd. Your laptop will already have one (connected to the inside of the headphone jack), and of probably pretty similar quality.

  • Any idea how this compares to the famous apple USB C dongle?

    • this one has a physical mute button - great for Zoom/Teams calls. Plus has additional noise cancelling features if you install the associated software.

Have a look at the review video in the OP

“ Our VoiceDetect feature controls your mute status by voice detection as you speak—your microphone gets muted automatically when you stop speaking, and unmutes you instantly as you start speaking. There is absolutely no need to fiddle with any buttons—physical or in-app—so you can on track with your train of thought during the pitch.”

    This is soooo dangerous.

    • yea, I won't be turning this feature on for sure

    • Sounds like it’s a bit more than just a DAC then.

My motherboard (MSI MAG B550) has a Realtek ALC1200 IC which has 7.1ch outputs. The DAC can do up to 192kHz, 32bit on each channel, with 95dB SNR on the rear port. I’m not sure why I’d need an external DAC unless the internal one is badly integrated in the motherboard. Having said that, there is a bit of noise in it when I ramp up my amplifier level.

Nice, but I'm waiting for an AdLib deal.

    • It's 2023…time to move up to Aureal A3D

  • Anyone know what DAC chip is this using? Can't find any info

  • Something suitable for Android usb-c to 3.5mm? That's not $150 or sound blaster.

    • Plenty of options - Apple (USB-C version), Microsoft, Google all have them under $20.

      Lots of generics about too..
