      Yes and yes.

  • Are there any external RAID enclosures that take two of the 4TB models over thunderbolt or USB 3.2?

  • Hi guys, How does this compare to the Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB PCIe M.2 NVMe SSD? https://www.bpctech.com.au/product/mz-v7s2t0bw-samsung-970-e…

    • This is twice faster and $60 cheaper compared to your link.

      • +1

And running cooler probably. 970 EP will definitely need a heatsink.

    • +8

bruh, compare us with 990 pro please, 970 evo plus launched in Australia in Jan 2019.
That was a top notch gen 3 ssd 4 years ago.
      We are in gen4 now.
I worked with Samsung for almost 10 years, I love Samsung SSDs.
But we definately win this one.

    • +1

If using on a PCIe gen 3 x4 system, you probably won't notice much difference. Need to wait for a 970 Evo Plus deal if you really want one though.
Using PCIe gen 4 x4, assuming you can utilise it, NM790 is faster. How much you can notice will depend on your usage (note: running Crystal DiskMark or benchmark software don't count).

Warranty, it is unclear how BPC does it. Whether it is replace with another one (if they have it in stock) or refund (though some OZBers are not happy with store credit refund) or something else. Samsung, AU stock, you need to go through RMA, sometimes, you get lucky and Samsung sends you a better SSD with 2X the storage (but sometimes you just get the same model back).

Based on current price and performance, NM790 is better. However, don't get tricked by the SSD marketing hype and think you will get 2X performance. It's silly to constantly transfer data from a fast NVMe SSD to another NVMe SSD (even that will lead to SLC cache running out). For most games and applications, the developers know full well RAM is much better than SSD (since RAM has 1000 times better latency).

  • does it need heatsink for laptop install?

    • most of the slim laptop doesn't fit heatsink.
      that's not even an option.
But newer ones do have enough space.
You can grab 1 ssd and install, see if the temperature is ok for your daily use. You can always add heatsink later on.

    • Or buy a pack of thermal pads based on the gap between the ssd and your bottom lid (if it is metal). Plastic bottom lid won't do the heat dissipation.

    • +1

Heatsink most likely not needed in general, unless you intend to write to the SSD a lot constantly or live in a very hot area with no air con.

PCs and laptops spend more time using RAM than SSD unless all you do in render 4K or 8K videos to SSDs, but if so, why use a laptop?

  • Cheers OP bought 4 x 4tb n 4 x 1tb.. Hope they live up to the hype, Albeit with that many drives i thought i might get upgraded free shipping oh well.. ill wait as im in WA only 7 to 14 days.

  • I’m looking to upgrade to NVMe 4TB for my Alienware R12. Anyone successfully upgraded to 4TB? I can’t find any info online, only max capacity 2TB was mentioned.

    • Other pros can chip in, but looking at the motherboard it wont get maxed out at 2tb. 4tb shpuld be fine

  • How is its performance for Ps5? Do i need a heatsink to use it? Can’t find a decent review about its performance in PS5. I am trying to get 4tb storage. As its so cheap and looks good with its subsequent read and write. Has anyone used it on their PS5?

    • +4

You don't need to worry about PS5 because a lot of OZBers use SSDs which are slower than NM790 in their PS5s.

Heatsink on PS5, while technically not needed, no one is going to tell you not to get one (because Sony wants people to use one). Any heatsink will do. For now, the SSD price is reasonable (i.e. it is a 4TB TLC SSD that has a decent $/GB rather than charging you a premium). However, prices of SSDs are heading downwards and clearly it is utilising the fact that most people are still quite uncomfortable with QLC. There are actually people using QLC SSDs in PS5.

Okay, I have the 1TB version of NM790. However, I don't have time to do much testing this weekend. Here is the finding with just testing the SSD for 5 minutes.

    • The SSD is Maxio MAP1602 with YMTC 3dv4 (XTacking 3.0) 232L TLC NAND.
    • On a PCIe gen 4 x4 system, what was advertised / marketed is correct (though that's typical SSD marketing).
    • The SSD does prioritise on areas which matter more in most benchmark tests.
    • Mixed usage is one area NM790 is weak at and that is generally not tested by most reviewers. I do need to check whether it has more to do with the controller or YMTC NAND (or both). Unfortunately, I returned my other YMTC based SSD back to Amazon so I only have limited data.
    • ChatGPT pointed out its bottom of the pack 4K random write latency at higher queue depth, from my brief test, it does appear to be on the slow / subpar side (but I haven't fully tested this to confirm it is bottom of the pack - does look that way though).
    • ChatGPT also pointed out subpar access time issue. I can re-produce the same result / issue as Pokede.net.

As much as I try to be as objective as possible, since I now own the SSD, please consider my opinion on this SSD moving forward being biased.

    • Thanks a heap for the update, Legend. Im still lurking for a 4TB second drive (non-OS but will be my main data drive where I'll keep all of my daily project work, photos, etc.). Im running a Solidgm P44 Pro as my OS drive and have 1 spare Gen 4 slot left. I was waiting for the 4TB Teamgroup MP34 to be at around $250 'for the dram' but this NM790 deal looks bl**dy good.
The thing is I'll be backing up from it frequently to SATA SSDs or a big HDD so I reckon I'm probably overthinking the 'Gen4 Dramless' vs 'Gen 3 with DRAM' thing??? Then again SSDs are creeping lower and lower and I dont need the drive right away so I wonder if a "Gen 4 TLC, 4TB with DRAM" is foreseeable for less than $300 in the next 6 months?

      • Update: purchased the 4tb. 2023 storage purchases complete.

  • Do we need to peel the sticker on the back before applying thermal pad?

    • Others have recommended it, so I have taken it off

Received the 4TB model of this last Friday. I was looking for a good secondary storage drive with a decent sustained write speed. Copying from a WD SN850X 4TB to this with 500GB left on the drive, the first 150GB or so was copied at 4TB/sec. Once the cache has filled up it sustained 800MB-1GB/sec until the drive was almost full. When I started filling it the sustained write speed was always over 1.5GB/sec. To me this drive works fine without DRAM cache.

Temps wise I have it installed in the second M.2 slot under the GPU using the motherboard heatsink, 50-55deg at idle, 60deg under sustained write and peaks of 72deg and not higher. This is with the original sticker intact. The drive is also single sided. How about an 8TB version?

Crystaldiskmark wise, benchmarks seem mostly similar to the SN850X which has DRAM cache and is my primary drive. I also have a Crucial P3 4TB (QLC) which drops to 80MB/sec once the cache gets filled up and this happens rather quickly. If you're looking for a secondary storage drive and don't want to take hours and hours to fill it, this Lexar drive is superior to the P3.

    • I think you meant 4GB/sec :-). The sustained speed of 800MB - 1GB/sec until almost full looks attractive for a DRAMless SSD at this price point!

      • Haha, yes indeed, these would be on another level if they did 4TB/sec.

    • Thank you. I was keen to hear from someone who bought the 4TB variant

    • +2

NM790 uses late foldback write recovery. That's why it only has 150GB SLC dynamic cache (which seems to be on the small side of SLC cache for 4TB). The 800MB to 1GB/s speed its TLC speed without SLC recovery.

The later on filling of the SSD, where it is ~ 1.5GB/s indicates it doesn't do aggressive SLC cache recovery. There are pros and cons with such approach. However, that behaviour is fairly normal.

It is somewhat interesting SN850X was mentioned. That one tends to do more aggressive SLC cache recovery so SLC speed becomes available again sooner. CrystalDiskMark, if you only look at MB/s, then you will feel NM790 look the same, especially if you leave it at default. NM790 is pretty good if it is for personal use. However, for server type usage with multiple accesses concurrently, its single core controller does show its weakness.

  • +1

I just installed this and using a quick winsat test getting 7.2gb read and 6.8gb write. Awesome! I recently bought a PC off BPC and it already has this drive it in it at 1TB. I just coped a 5gb file from one drive to another and it was instantaneous!

  • So my 4TB just arrived. 54 degrees straight after power on, and 53 at idle under the standard mobo plate (MSI TH690). Not sure if it's too high, but I never had previous drives that warm. Will keep an eye on it.

    • what did you use to check drive temp?

      • HD Sentinel 6.10 Pro. After Crystal Disk test 73 degrees. Edit: Moved to the bottom slot. Temp dropped to 50 straight after boot and then 48 at idle. 73 during test

        • +1

Removing the branding cover had 0 effect. So, if it will become too hot there will be an additional heatsink in my case then

          • @masya: My mobo came with heatsink for the nvme's.. sitting 43c idle.

            • @kojihama: Maybe my mobo heatsink is not that good. I've ordered one from Ali and will check how it will behave after

        • +1

Those temps are not hot. I had a Samsung 970 Evo Plus that used to sit at 62 at idle and hit the 80s under load. This was under a motherboard heatsink.
HWINFO is another good option for checking temps.

    • Got mine today as well. It sits at 39C idle (19C ambient) and 59C max with CrystalDisk. I do have a bequiet Dark Rock blowing on it, my 960 Evo was about the same temp.

    • @masya These drives are rated to 70c according to Lexar - if you're getting up to 73c under load, then you need to improve the cooling a bit !

      • Yeah have ordered from Ali

  • +1

    Mine arrived. what a bargain.

Just found BPC eBay is included in Afterpay promo:

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/225645680934 1TB $63.75

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/225645693528 2TB $121.55

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/325737102952 4TB $239.7

Can use discounted eBay Gift Card to pay and maybe stack with 10% cashback after 7pm today?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/794250

    • Yep came here to say this. I'll be stacking with 10% CB…

      • FML. I purchased it with Afterpay promo before at $109. Should have waited since I have ebay GCs.

  • I have one M2 installed already and the specs say I have two slots

    https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-B650M-MORTAR-WIFI/Specif…

can I fit the 4TB in this PC?

  • @BPC Technology

hi, when do you have more stock of the 4tb model?

    regards

    • +1

      We looking at Mid-Sept :)

      • Do you have any M.2 pci-e x4 cards that support the 4TB model for a reasonable price? eg.

        • Hi Chris,

I checked our stock, looks like the PCCG one is the cheapest.

          Cheers,
          BPC Team

  • @BPC Technology Hi bpc, I want to use this as an os to replace my wd black sn770 1tb on my lenovo yoga c940. Someone commented in a different chatroom *the Maxio controller and YMTC combo does have quite a few reports of drive disappearing randomly" care to give your thoughts on this please? I really want to buy this unit. So confused

    • I think I encountered it once while running it on my server for 2 days straight. Waiting for it to reoccur again.

      • Thanks for sharing, I think I won't risk buying because this is for my os

  • +2

thought i'd share my small testing
for real world heatsink isnt strictly necessary
you can see there's actually a lot of throttling going on though so would recommend one for sure

  • I'm running Plex on a laptop with 1 x nvme and 1 x 2.5" drive slots giving me a nice 5-6w server. I've currently got 1TB in each but want to grow the storage. I get the feeling this drive is overkill, I don't need high speeds, storage capacity is more important. Should I be holding out for something that runs a little cooler and hopefully cheaper?

  • Thanks. Great deal. Bought 2tb for my new acer nitro 16 also posted here.
    Nice combo !

  • I need a new 2TB to replace my portable backups drive, this seems a cheaper option than getting another 2TB SSD, thx op.

  • Mine is DOA :(

Has anyone had to deal with BPC for returns? I hope they still have stock of the 2TB. I was lookig forward to more space for my photos on this laptop.

    • +1

A large percentage of warranty returns are tested to be without fault. In the event the product is not faulty, BPC Technology reserves the right to charge a minimum service fee of $129 per hour for time spent on testing the product. Any shipping or handling costs will also be chargeable to the customer.

i'd make sure you troubleshooted everything first (:

  • Perfect timing, buliding a proxmox server using a Dell Micro 7060 and had a afterpay coupon that was going to expire in 3 days.

  • Usually Samsung and Patriot have been my go to for SSD…hopefully Lexar can hold its own as I've never used one of their SSD before.

  • No $10 off newsletter sign-up anymore, right guys? Might have to hold off, my wallet is empty from recent GPU purchase…

    • There is a $10 off afterpay reward if you qualify in the app

      • Yeah… I'm just gonna buy it off eBay with the new shopback deal + 2% giftcards

  • ordered on 17/8 .. still waiting for delivery .. sigh..

    • @elcheapo
You got your drive as yet or still waiting for it?

I have one in my cart on the BPC site but dont want to pay 20au for a courier to blow out the price, plus eBay even have higher rates and there seems no difference even if you have eBay Plus.

Shame there is no OzBargainer fast ship option 🚀

    • I ordered the 2TB on the 29/08 via eBay, shipped next day. Delivered on 04/09.

  • I got the 4tb….thanks OP and Lexar!

  • +1

Finally installed the 4tb. Getting about 72degress under load which is too much. Using the heatsink on the Asus Rog strix x570 motherboard. Other m.2 is doing about 62 under load. I can't seem to find anywhere that states pulling off the front sticker voids warranty (if it does that seems about scummy.) But will do that and re-test tonight.

    • how did you go with the heatsink? did you pull the sticker?

      • +1

Yup pulled it off and dropped about 10-15C underload and was running well under the 70degree max heat range now. Crazy that this got manufactured like that. Great ssd otherwise…

  • I have a newb question - I am doing some video processing work on some VHS tape captures (upscaling, denoising etc) and working with some.large video files 40-50gb per 1.5hrs.

Some of these tasks take several hours, would this non DRAM SSD be acceptable for something that will be read/written to continuously for long periods?

  • what do people use to transfer everything (or i believe the nomenclature is 'Clone') from one nvme ssd to another? 1:1 copy, OS and drivers so even my motherboard is fooled to think it's the same ssd? I've been meaning to upgrade from my 1TB WD SN750 Gen 3 to a Gen 4 but just cant be bothered having to reinstall OS, etc.

    • +1

      Use Macrium Reflect Free Edition.

You can either clone the drive, or you can take an image of your existing drive and then restore it to the new drive.

The image process is a better option if the drives are two different sizes - you can stretch the partitions in the restore process.

  • Should I get this?

    • If you need the storage and speed then yes. Personally, I’ve been sitting on the fence. The lack of DRAM and the uncertain YMTC flash component are the reasons that is holding me off. I’ve got a few SSDs from Prime Day a few months ago and a SN850X 4TB. I think I will wait for the 990Pro 4Tb to drop down around $380 then I’ll get that instead.

This drive (especially the 4TB variant) is currently the most bang for the buck, IMO.

      • Ok, you convinced me. I have 3 drives currently so would be useful to move everything to one.

  • price has increased $269 for 4TB at both BPC and MWAVE
MWAVE was $255 said promo ended 04/11/2023 but price changed along with BPC
was on the fence but looks like i won't be purchasing now

    1TB was $65 now $75 ($10 increase)
    2TB was $129 now $135 ($6 increase)
    4TB was $255 now $269 ($14 increase)

    deal officially expired

    • Yea, wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday and see if there’s other deals if you’re not in a rush.
