$749 just expired yesterday for the non-Sapphire.

I hike and scuba a lot and my non-Sapphire has taken quite a beating. Screen still looks like new. Same can't be said for the bezel but at least know the screen is good enough for my use case.

saphire is still alot better if you want to keep it for 3-5 years and not worry to much. but agree the standard screen isnt weak by any means

I managed to scratch my saphire glass. (Not on garmin, on casio trek pro) just saying …

        • +2

If you scratched sapphire, that would have smashed a glass screen. So just saying…

      • Yep, still got my fenix 3 sapphire from 7 years ago - screens still looks like new even though I have literally smashed it against railings or poles, accidentally, that I have gone past. I doubt it would have survived without. Bezel is a bit scratched up.

    • Beaten up bezel gives it "character" in my opinion :)

    • I bought it last week. Is the sapphire screen worth it for an extra $350?

      • +2

In my personal experience no, but depends what you do and whether you are clumsy. I'm outdoors a lot and hit or scrap against stuff all the time. Your mileage will vary and it all comes down to luck. Just get a quality screen protector for the non-Sapphire

I bought a watch that was no sapphire, and the very same day I lightly bumped my desk, and it scratched. Don't be like me.

Sapphire model also has 32GB instead of 16GB storage as well as better GPS over the Slate Steel non sapphire version.

  • Probably because Garmin dropped the price to $1,099

The Gen 2 Sapphire was the same price as Gen 2 Sapphire Pro, $1,699. Go figure.

  • Any deals on the Instinct 2X Solar Tactical?

  • I got this for about a year and a half ago when i combined it with the discount on gift cards. If you can manage to get TCN gift cards on sale it will bring it down to under $1k which is pretty good.

    I love mine, great watch.

i downgraded from fenix to forerunner due to the weight of the watch. must resist now

    • Uh oh, I hope I don't have a problem with the weight of these, especially coming from the really light Galaxy Watch 4

  • What do people use this for? Curious, never thought of having one

    • +4

Hiking, running, cycling, estimated V02 max calcs, checking the accuracy of hire car speedo :P
Also telling the time, listening to music, paywave, storage of info (notes widget), sleep tracking, smartphone notifications, getting precise GPS locations, checking bearings etc.

    • Apart from fitness tracking which is extremely motivating and awesome data to have, I also love the way these look, especially with always on display

      • +1

sleep tracking is pretty nifty too

        • The accuracy's pretty bad though

Worth noting that there are many cheaper smartwatches have many or most of these features. This is a premium product with every feature done better, sometimes marginally better.

      • This is actually true, don't know why you got negged.

  • A smart watch costs this much would have 1 month battery life I assume?

    • 16 days apparently (with always on display turned off - less if on)

      • the wrist activated display is fine - flick your wrist and it comes on. Not an issue with it not being on all the time (for me anyways)

    • +7

Apple watch Ultra has a battery life of 36 hours by comparison.

    • benefits of having this one is the better battery life (16 days) compared to standard smart watches which requires charges every 2-3 days. But wont have the added features of other smartwatches like cellular etc…

Not keen to downgrade from a Fenix 7

    • Isn't the epix line just the Fenix 7 with a better screen

    • -1

What downgrade? Exact same features except this doesn't have solar (which is pretty useless anyway on the garmins) and this has an oled screen vs transflective LCD.

    • -1

Would never go back from solar

  • Do these work well with iPhones? or better via Android

    • I am using with my iPhone. You can't reply to texts from watch if paired with iPhone. With Android phones you can do that. Other than that, there are no differences in functionality.

      • Cheers thanks for that
