    DVD lol

    • What is a DVD?

    • Especially when the blu ray set is as fantastic as it is

  • -2

IMO sopranos just beats it, but still no 2 in my books…amazing show..

    • +19

Why would compare sopranos to this , the wire is in a league of its own !

    • +5

Not for me. Both great shows, but The Wire by some distance in my humble opinion.

    • Breaking Bad all the way

      • +11

Good but not even close to The Wire. Better call Saul is better than Breaking Bad too.

        • +7

          The wire
          Better call saul
          Breaking bad

But watching breaking bad before better call saul makes it that much better

          • +1

            @MrThing: the wire
            sopranos
            bosch
my 3 fave american tv series worth watching it all

          • +2

            @MrThing: Married At First Sight
            Love Island UK
            The Wire

        • +2

Is better call saul being better than breaking bad a popular opinion?

Fan of BB, never seen BCS, just shorts

          • +1

@kehuehue: I've never heard this opinion either. I find it surprising. My family loved BB, but found BCS only above average. Wife didn't even finish the last season, she couldn't stand the Saul character.

            • +3

              @rokufan:

she couldn't stand the Saul character

              is she insane?

          • +3

@kehuehue: Yes BB was my no.1 until i watched BCS..
I dont think there ever was a sequel better than original like this . I have to say watching shorts probably gives you an impression of a boring show.

            • @dondiego: Well technically better call saul is a prequel

          • +4

@kehuehue: I only watched the first couple of seasons of BCS and thought it was weak.

              • @G-rig: I watched 2 full seasons and it was like watching paint dry.

EDIT: actually, it was 3 full seasons. Yawn.

                  • @G-rig: You're the one commenting about BCS on a post about The Wire..

                      • @G-rig: This conversation is so boring it reads like a season of BCS

            • +1

@lunchbox99: Yeah, I'm with you. BCS was watchable for 2 seasons, but unlike BB (and The Wire, and Sopranos, and all but the last season of GoT) I never felt that palpable anticipation for the next episode. Like a caravan park girlfriend, after the Season 2 break, I just kinda forgot about it and never bothered going back for more.

        • +4

The Shield and Deadwood are both better than Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul.

        • +1

Saul series was very slow, and remember one episode was boring filler about the lady lawyer trying to get an old man to move out of his property. And you enjoyed that more?

I think “Greatest show ever created.” everyone keeps spamming is biased sheep mentality. I don’t think for the life that it is for the earth population

          • @HangryCakeStore: I was thinking how to say this nicely. Thanks mate, can't go any better. I can see sheeps coming with two or three ghost accounts to down-vote here ;) For goodness sake, please remember "Different people think differently"

          • +1

@HangryCakeStore: agree. I found BCS to be very slow and boring plots. I think if it hadn't been a BB series it never would have gained traction ie people persevered because of the BB connection.

      • I agree, but dis better hands down

      • +3

Found it so over rated and slow

      • +4

        BOARDWALK EMPIRE

      • Breaking Bad got worse with each season after season 2

    • +3

No love for Band of Brothers??

  • +4

I've been to Baltimore and the only dangerous encounter I saw was ordering seafood at a Chinese restaurant. Must be the second series they go ape sh*t.

    • +7

Baltimore, Detroit and San Fransisco are in leagues of their own in terms of being crime-ridden shite-holes.

Baltimore and Detroit have been suffering a complete economic and social collapse for decades though now. You can drive for 20 minutes at a time through Baltimore before coming across a street that has less than a handful of condemned houses or units. It's an unbelievable sight to behold. Some of their suburbs are literally worse than going through third world ghetto in a tuk-tuk.

      • -7

How’s this any of Australia’s concern
Is this why everyone keeps spamming “Greatest show ever created.” is just biased sheep mentality. I don’t think for the life that it is for the earth population
Like the world isn’t America.. everyone saw how ridiculous it got during trump years.

  • +7

The show is mind-blowing. Must watch !

One more thing - price of brick going up.

    • +3

I dunno much bout cards but i think these fo’ 5s beat a Full house

      • +1

All in the game though is it ?

        • +2

This game is rigged man, we like them little b1tches on the chess board

    • +1

Urgently checking CamelCamelCamel to see if Marlo's new brick price is good historically

  • +16

    Omar coming

    • +2

      Oh indeed

    • Woop Woop !

  • +5

    Best TV show ever.

    A'ight!

  • +4

"A man must have a code"

    Rip Omar

What a beast of a series, they dont make tv like they used to

  • +3

    "I'm just a gangster, I suppose."

I must be living under a rock. Never heard of it, but kind of intrigued now with all these glowing ozbargain recommendations.

    • +2

      All The Pieces Matter

    • +8

Get the Blu-ray version. You don't want to watch some 4:3 standard definition crap. If you can't find a Blu-ray then 1080p rips are available in the usual places.

      • +3

Many prefer the dvd version. The creators wanted the show to have a 4:3 aspect ratio

        • I prefer the original 4:3 version as a lot of the earlier seasons were filmed to suit that aspect ratio and loses impact in the wider format.

For example, season 2's ending but can see why others would prefer the other aspect ratio.

        • +4

          Not true.

David Simon and the minor producers wanted it recorded in HD from the start, but HBO would only give them the budget for SD for the first two seasons of the show. When the ratings came in for season two and they got green-lit for as many more seasons as they wanted to make, so they recorded S3-S5 in HD. They had the option for a 6th and final season, but David Simon didn't want to do it, he wanted to move on to other projects.

David Simon confirmed himself that the show was a majority production of HBO and as such HBO handled the digital remaster. He had no real part in that process but was happy with it.

David Simon himself during a fan Q&A session:

          Fan:

So I was wondering who are the peolpe who did the digital remastering of this show? I speifically would like to know the name of the colorist who worked on this. I heard through the grapevine that for some reason the facility and the people involved have never been credited. I do know for a fact that the colorists listed on the end credits are not the ones who were involved in the HD version. I am amazed at how faithfully the grading is to the original. I think it would be nice to know who did this and thow they approched this job.

          David:

I have no clue as it didn’t happen in my shop. This was an HBO enterprise and I interjected only at a review stage, focusing on the shot composition. I got a general sense of the color and was, for the most part, pleased as you are pleased. I’m satisfied that while this new version of The Wire is not, in some specific ways, the film we first made, it has sufficient merit to exist. There are scenes that clearly improve in HD and in the widescreen format. But, there are things that are not improved. And even with our best resizing, touch-ups and maneuver, there are some things that are simply not as good. That’s the inevitability here. This new version, is, after all, is one that is presented in an aspect ratio that simply wasn’t intended or serviced by the filmmakers.

    • -7

The recommendation “Greatest show “everyone keeps spamming is just biased sheep talk. Feels like people just obsess what Americans say during the time wire came out,
wasn’t this during the time Aus soldiers followed usa into the useless Afghan war.. Lol around 2002 this was made no wonder

  • +4

Deadwood is another incredible series. Too bad it only ran for three seasons

    • +1

Plus a feature length episode made much later to try and give the show a real ending. Despite having most of the cast it was quite underwhelming and anticlimactic.

  • +2
  • +6

One of the best, if not best, TV series ever made.

David Simon, the creator of the show, spend several years as a reporter in Baltimore, a year with the city homicide squad (see his book "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets" later made into a TV series) amongst other work and this TV show accurately reflects society's institutions and each season focuses on a particular topic (unfortunately, they were not able to film a season focusing on immigration). The same themes shown in this TV show also occur in Australia.

You follow drugs, you get drug addicts and drug dealers. But you start to follow the money, and you don't know where the **** it's gonna take you.

Bought this box set for a steal from Amazon 15 years ago….. Found out region zones exist

  • Good for those with Plex, who like to own a copy of the material for the ethical sake.

  • Shows $58.49 now

  • Damn just tried to buy and missed out.

    • Try marketplace. It’ll be around $15-25

  • +4

Greatest TV show of all time imo, agree with others.

Other top shows (HBO pumps them out i'd have to say) in no particular order:
the sopranos (great characters, as one of the first great TV shows, takes a while to find its footing).
breaking bad (great, a bit plot driven though)
    mad men
succession (just finished this, fantastic performances and screenplay)

    • Deadwood is better than most, if not all those.

      • that's a very big call…

I'll add it to my watch list haha

        • Deadwood narrowly beats out most of them in their respective RT / IMDB / Review site scores from the viewers & members.

The makers & writers of Deadwood were also the one's behind making the opening seasons of HBO's True Detective & True Blood. They also served as uncredited writers for HBO's Rome.

HBO's current really popular show "Succession" started out as a pilot back in 2014 called "The Money". The makers of Deadwood made that pilot for HBO and then sold the story and production rights to HBO for it's scheduled two seasons after HBO refused to meet their pay demands for making it. HBO then sat on the show for years before eventually making it under someone else. The whole first two seasons were written by the Deadwood writing team, even though they aren't credited for it.

Currently binge watching The Wire on Binge.
    Series 4
    Episode 9

    I need to go for a walk….

    • +1

Once you finish the show, binge watch "The Shield". The final couple of seasons of it go way harder and get more gritty than anything you'll see in The Wire.

      • I've got the complete series of The Shield on DVD….maybe after my walk

    • Binge is such a shitty app on smart tvs. I'm just amazed at their front end UI/UX incompetancy. Plus shitty 1080p quality.

    • +2

The Wire was so intense for me I had to pause 2-4 weeks between each season.

  • +1

What the f**k did Iiiii do?

  • If you enjoyed the Wire, give "We own this city" a go. David Simons co-created it. It's not as good as the The Wire, not by a long shot, but still enjoyable and worth watching. A few cast from The Wire star in it which takes a little bit to get used to (Marlo is a cop lol)

Edit: David Simons also made "Show me a hero" but gotta say its a very dry mini-series. Can't recommend.

  • While apparently this show is objectively good, as someone who watches stuff for escapism, this show is too realistic for me lol

  • Justified is also an excellent show. So is Bosch

    • Bosch is alright, too long-winded for my taste.

    • The Shield and Deadwood are both better.

  • The Corner is also worth a watch. David Simon-ish Baltimore drama

    • +2

The Corner is a mini-series adapted from a family in the book "The Corner" that David Simon and Ed-Burns co-wrote.

The book is what The Wire was made from. As such, 11 of the cast members from this show went on to be in The Wire, which begun filming a year after this mini-series was made.

      • Thanks google!

  • +4

    Wire,
    Sopranos
    Shield

BB overrated, same flow every season, loved the first season, but predictable from there on.
    BCS is better than BB
    Mr Inbetween best Aussie show.

Just started watching southland, never even heard of it until 2 days ago, pretty rad so far,

Best show I have watched recently was Rogue Heroes

    Deadwood is great.

    • +1

Also most David Simon stuff is great,

Treme, Show me a hero, Generation Kill, The Deuce etc etc.

      • Jamhot the real MVP, the only mention of these great shows

    • +2

      Mr Inbetween is great !
good action, great plots, very good for an aussie series

    • +2

Mr Inbetween is the best Aussie show ever. I'm so proud it's Aussie.

    • -1

I actually think Sopranos is overrated too. Very good to start with but I thought it became really repetitive.

  • +2

Whenever people start talking about the Wire and Breaking Bad I cant help but think of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGJU6IxFBuQ
I gotta say though that Breaking Bad is best show I have ever seen, except maybe the Wire…. :)

  • +2

Just remember, DVD is a 27 year old video format. The video is interlaced and in 576i resolution, and probably the audio sped up by ~4% for PAL.

  • i felt like callin' the PoPo .. after I realized that 3 of the main characters in The Wire were British actors lolz

On that note the series 'Gangs of London' has plenty of shock value

  • Not as good as Blue Heelers for mine but it's certainly right up there.

  • +3

Following this comment section for the recommendations 🙏

  • +1

Guys do yourselves a favour, if you loved this & Sopranos as much as I did then you’ll love this https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2049116/ it’s an amazing Italian series gritty violent & unforgiving.

Gomorrah streaming now on SBS On Demand

    https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/tv-series/gomorrah

    • +1

Cheers for this just checked the trailer n I’m sold. HBO series r just another tier above others. Snowfall is pretty decent

    • It became a bit too unbelievable after S2 though.

I appreciate they used real locations in Naples

  • +2

We need a remaster of Oz too!

    • I was seeing if anyone else was going to mention OZ. That show is up there with one of the best shows of all time.
I thought I saw last year that it has been released on Bluray

  • +1

I must be in the minority. Watched this a couple years ago after reading all the positive reviews and although I found it good, it wasn't as great to me as everyone says. Each to their own I guess.

  • Watching this for the first time atm. Why buy DVD when can stream 1080 for free in the interwebs.
