With the Euro rules coming into effect feels increasingly likely they’ll introduce USB-C across the new range.

I’d be very surprised if Apple had different connectors on the new iPhones too (understanding they’ve done this with iPad).

        • The rule only comes into effect in December 2024 AFAIK, so technically they have time till iPhone 16 comes out.
They're free to do whatever they want with iPhone 15.

          • @tjoy: Agreed, what I’m not clear on is whether they can continue selling existing devices with Lightning after the laws come into effect?

If they can’t, then they’d be crazy not to switch this year as they won’t have a previous gen model to sell at a lower price.

            • @Mitch889: In the EU they can continue to sell product that is already in the EU at the time the new laws take effect. They can’t import further product into the EU for sale after the law effective date. Companies can flood the market with old stock, as long as it’s imported before the cutoff date.
… however they can do whatever they want outside the EU. So if they switch to USB-C only for iphone 16, then it’s possible EU is prioritised for inventory of iphone 16, while the rest of the world gets the older stock with iphone 15 (if there’s a production shortfall).

            • @Mitch889: Doubt Apple cares about not having previous gen phones to sell at lower price, for example if I go to iPhone 13 pro page (https://www.apple.com/au/iphone-13-pro/) and tries to buy it, it just redirects me to iPhone 14 pro page, they can do the same redirecting to iPhone 16.

Agreed that they'd want to clear the iPhone 15 stock though, but I doubt the law prohibits sale of existing devices without USB-C (that'll affect the whole electronics market badly), it's likely only applicable for sale of new models coming to market.

              • @tjoy: Using France as an example, they still offer the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 at lower price points. Clearly, they care.

iPhone 15 may have a price hike FYI

      • They already f**ked up with the Visio pro pricing. Would they do a double whammy?

There's speculation that Apple may ditch cable connections all together and go wireless-only charging.
Considering it's Apple, I think this has a fair probability of being true

      • +5

Pretty sure I saw a news report that Apple was going with USB-C on the 15, but they were intent on following only the word and not the spirit of the law.
ie. yes, they would begrudgingly adopt the USB-C connector, but the port itself will have a proprietary signal/protocol that’ll reject all non-Apple (or non-Apple certified) cables.

The whole thing with the EU was originally about e-waste (which is valid when there’s millions of USB-C cables lying around, but especially when the lightning connector is slow USB 2.0 garbage) so I really hope they get fined out the ass for pulling this kind of stunt.

          ☝🏻 this!!

As much as Apple pulls shit like this, I don't think it'll be the case with USB-C. They went balls deep with their MacBooks, iPads, desktop Macs (Studio, Mini), AirPods, etc - and they've always been a decent implementation (including support for alt-mode DP where possible, Thunderbolt where possible, and best-in-class USB-C cables that can be used with any product).

I doubt they would segment their cables into 2 classes (iPhone vs. everything else they sell with a USB-C port).

People tend to forget - Apple has been working with and supplying products with USB-C for longer than most other manufacturers, generally.

        • Rumour has it apple will cripple regular non apple USB-c cable's charging speed, apple will put a chip in their usb-c cables that they sell and only charge at full speed when the apple chip is detected in the name of safety

          • @viper8548: Well except the eu already put them on notice that if they even try shit like this. They will be fined.

          • @viper8548: Easily solved with wireless charging. Rumour or not, sounds like a non issue tbh. If you can afford an iphone getting a cable with chips isn't really an issue is it?

        • but the port itself will have a proprietary signal/protocol that’ll reject all non-Apple (or non-Apple certified) cables.

The EU already put them on notice not to try this shit or they will be fined.

      • I feel like one of the biggest obstacles to ditching ports altogether is wired CarPlay. Wireless is becoming more common, but there are still a significant number of models that only support wired.

    • It's all but a surefire certainty at this point that lightning is in the dust.

    • Going to be more then $200 this year , prices going up on the latest iPhone

  • Iphone 15 launch is soon

Pro max only $150 off pffft

    • That's right, updated the post

  • Costco prices currently are:
    14 128 $1195 256 $1375 512 $1865
    Plus 128 $1375 256 $1535 512 $1875
    pro 128 $1045 Pro 256 $1695 Pro 512 $2025
    Pro max 128 $1745 256 $1935 512 $2235

All are cheaper than jb hifi if you are members of course

    • their website says eg 14 pro 128 is $1,544, not $1,045??

      • You are right. Error whilst typing

  • Wouldn't be surprised is the 15 is $100 to $200 more depending on model. However, might be some deals around given people are cutting back on spending.

Most people I would assume charge wireless so holding off for USB C shouldn't matter. Other specs might make it worth holding off purchasing decision.

I may pick up the 14 pro 128gb next week.

  • 15 will be rellease 13 september

    • 15 pro max is only model worth holding out for, 6x periscope lens compared to the current 3x telephoto.

Probably starting at 2.5k AUD, minimum 500 price bump.

      • I've kinda same thoughts

  • I price matched this with apple when they had 100 off and then took it overseas and got GST back

Don’t you have to declare it on the way back in

      • I went with my parents and when they came back they ticked yes for everything so they didn’t really check

The way to go is to price beat DJ with OW. E.g., they have 14PMax at $1699, OW price beat would be $1614.

    • I love ozbargain… Just got it for $1614 thanks to your comment 😁
