If the compost smells foul, you're doing it wrong.

If the compost smells fowl, you are putting too many chickens in it.

  • These are around 160L. Might be cheaper from eBay with free shipping.

If you can afford it, get the 245L Maze tumbler (takes 2-3 hours to assemble) and ~3x the cost of this one, but very well built. Also check for second hand ones on Marketplace, etc - I managed to get a free one and can attest to its build.

    • How do you use it? Can you paint the realistic picture?

I imagine filling one side up everyday (into one section until full) with kitchen scraps/garden waste isn't the right approach

Almost there. Add some browns (carbon rich material) as well such as dried leaves/ripped newspaper. Rotate to aerate. If not wet, add some water - composting needs greens (nitrogen rich), browns, oxygen, water and microbes.

Is this the same compost bin that 'War on Waste' gave to the street kids to build and use ?

      Don't be a Wally.

      • Why? .. it's a persona that works well for Craig Reucassel

Edit: a quick flit thru iView reveals that .. Yes .. KOZYARD is the brand of rotating compost bin that was sent out to the street participants

    What size are the gloves?

Avoid smaller tumblers if you can get a bigger one. These rely on the heat built up to speed up the composting process, but with smaller masses of compost there isn't as much heat so things go so slow you may as well just have a small heap. Another problem with this design is the size of the loading openings. They are too small for quick loading. I have one this size and one larger as recommended above. The difference between the two is significant.

I got my larger one from Gumtree but marketplace often has second hand ones from people who give up on composting.

  • Received mine today so fast shipping. Took around 1 hour to put together. No missing parts and a few spares provided just in case. Quality much better than expected and size is quite big. Would not want much bigger as weight would put a lot of stress on the frame. Only part I can see being a problem down the track is the stand and how it will handle being exposed to the weather.
