$30 Credit for Trading in Your Old Auto or 4WD Battery & Buy a Century Auto or 4WD Battery @ Supercheap Auto (Club Members Only)

500

FML, Just today I dropped off 4 batteries at the Battery World in Fairy Meadows that literally shares the parking lot with SCA!! And got nothing! 🤦‍♂️
I was close to buying a new one from BW. Glad I didn't. My OEM battery, that is 11 years old now, has been showing signs of weakness, so will potentially use this offer myself. From website:

Club members will receive $30 credit when they purchase a new Century Automotive or 4WD battery and trade in their used automotive of 4WD battery at any Supercheap Auto store

Promotion starts Thursday 27/07/23 and concludes on Sunday 6/08/23.

It was $40 few weeks back..

    • +3

before dropping off my old batteries I searched OzB and only saw the expired $5 credit deal. So $30 seemed very good to me

      • -4

I believe nobody had posted it on OzB. I found it out only when I changed the battery with them.

Where's the cheapest place to get a battery these days? The one in my current car is going on 12 years but if I leave the car for two weeks it's flat, been charging it the night before I need to go somewhere for a while (it's the second car so doesn't get too much use), so I ha e been out of the game for about 12 years now and my hustle is weak

    • +1

Depends where you live, but I found https://mightybatteries.com.au/ to be the cheapest with free same day delivery for my car.

    • +5

Some auto spark businesses and dedicated battery supply places will probably price match a genuine price. Look for an Exide retailer and offer up some prices from the lowest you can get for your size model battery. Bunnings is a pretty good place to get a price that is consistently lower than Repco & SCA. IMHO those 2 stores are greedy on battery prices. Crazy, because the goodwill on lower battery prices would drive much more subsequent impulsive purchases. Shop around & you should get a high quality HD Red Top Exide N70ZZ $25 cheaper than an an SCA dupe , and STILL get a 40 month warranty.(register online to get the extra 6 months) SCA warranty is pretty ordinary, to say the least.
Can't believe you got 12 years out of a battery. Little uses usually kills quicker than not.

Many years ago I bought a battery from Kmart, bigger than the car's original one for around $120 and it's till going strong.
Unfortunately Kmart stopped selling car batteries!

        • +1

Those were the days. I once bought a reverse-cycle air conditioner at Kmart.

12 years for a car battery is insane. I've never got more than 4 years out of one.

          • +3

@Cheap Gamer: If you buy a half decent battery you should get more than 3-4 years imo. The cheap Century crap from SCA etc probably won't last. I like the Varta Silver Dynamic batteries, German made seem to last pretty well.

      • Actually the car got used daily for the first 6 years, and for the next 4 only got used once or twice a week but for a 100km trip, it's a top of the line nrma battery and the car is an 01 Camry 4cyl so doesn't take much to crank. It's only the last few years it doesn't get out much

Coincidentally my other car's battery is also 12 years old this year, but being an EV it's always at the optimum charge and it's not used to crank anything, so going to see how long I can hang on to that one too. It's the original one that came with the car.

        • +1

Bunnings sell Exide batteries which are fairly reasonably priced too. Be good if you don't want to spend much.

I've got the same model Camry and they take the fairly commonly used 55D23L type from memory which goes on sale fairly regularly.

I've always held out until Supercharge has a 40% off or what not. I've always had a good run with their Supercharge Gold Batteries.

          • @placard: Yeah SCharge batteries are also pretty good bang for buck.

        • What's the EV? 12 years is still pretty good!!!

    • +3

      Costco if you got membership

      • Do they fit it and dispose of old battery?

        • No and no

          • @Poor Ass: lol got negged for answering truthfully

            I just don't get it

      • +1 for Costco.

Was looking for new car battery last year. It was $250 at Supercheap Auto and same battery was half price in Costco. Even if you have to buy Costco membership, it's totally worth it.

    • +2

cheap in Costco I think, in particular, when they have 25% off promotion

      • +1

        Yep exideted

      12 flapping years????

Batteries Direct. They deliver next business day. Sometimes, I get same day delivery for just $10.

    • When i needed one last year Bunnings had the cheapest. No idea if that is still the case. Worth checking.

  • FYI Repco offer this too

  • So is this a credit that can go towards the battery or is it after and you can only apply to something else you buy

    • Latter.. Mine credited 3 weeks after the battery purchase. Unfortunately the credit is valid for only 28 days.

      • +1

Thats annoying. I'd rather get $20 but be able to use it straight away

        • I would do the same.. anyway something is better than nothing

    • the way I understand it, you get the credit after the transactions: " Credit will be applied to Club members accounts on Tuesday 22nd August 2023 and expire on Tuesday 19th September 2023 "

  • …a better battery, that is initially cheaper, is way better than a credit ….at this scale.
My experience is neither Repco or SCA battery prices reflect what their turnover would be. Even on special.

  • +3

Are you limited to 1 trade-in? If I have 4 old batteries do I get $120 credit or would I need to buy 4 new batteries. Can't see anything in the T&Cs

  • fyi some supercheap offer free battery recharging but it will depend on the condition of your battery.

    • how does that work? do you leave your car et the SCA overnight?

      • you take your battery to them and they charge it overnight.

it is highly recommended that you dont take the battery to supercheap via public transport.

  • +5

I'd rather stick my tongue on the terminals than buy from Supercheap. Batteries Direct are much cheaper for car and boat batteries.
Let's compare the pair on a Century D23RMMF. Supercheap are $55 more expensive with a $30 cashback.
    Supercheap - $260 pickup only
    Batteries Direct - $175 + $10 delivery

    • Yeah,same

    • +6

thats why u price match, pay with discounted gift cards and get the credit back <3 be a boss when u do things :)

      • This 1+, frequently doing this myself honestly.

    • +1

I would like to see tongue on terminal show

Even with a credit it wouldn't be worth buying a century battery. Worthless pieces of crap. Dont last, barely make the warranties, and CCA is dismal when tested against other units brands during the life period.

    • +1

I use to think century was reliable, but ive had one too many crap out on me early. Not sure what battery brands are good these days.

      • +2

I really like Supercharge Gold. Always had a good run out of them. Higher CCA rating than equivalent Century too.

      • That is sad to head about an Australian brand.
I guess it doesn't make financial sense to build reliable, if most ppl standing before a selection in the store choose price :(

    • +1

Came for this comment, not disappointed!

  • +1

The battery I wanted was listed for around $260…. i priced matched for $90 off plus the $40 credit :) it was quite epic

    • Isn't the credit currently only $30? Curious who they priced matched also.

      • last promo it was $40… why wouldnt they price match? its their policy and the terms and conditions doesnt say u cant double dip, at least not the previous one

        • 👋 only asked who you matched with as ive a list of different stoes ive sucessfully managed sca to price match & beat lol, think you misunderstood my question completely, thanks.

  • +4

If you're buying a battery check the manufacturer date, I got stung with an 18month old one, didn't hold a charge chap tried to tell me it was my alternator. The Century and Repco ones use a silly code. The last two letters are the month/year A being January and G is 2023. So A24BF is afternoon 24, Feb, 2022

    • If it wasn't holding charge from the getgo it's a warranty issue anyway.
      Where did you buy it?

      • I got it refunded, they're not supposed to sell them older than 6 months old as they crystallise over the plates when left sitting for too long. It wasn't a big store, I wouldn't name them..

  • +1

I never had luck with SUPERCHARGE car battery for my Toyota Kluger, always failed before warranty. stock Panasonic that come with the car lasted 7 or more years.

    • +1

Mine is the original from 11 years ago (on a car with the start/stop feature) and made by VARTA. I'm deciding between "buy Australian made"/Century and Varta atm

  • I noticed a couple of places selling refurb/remanufactured batteries, anyone know who good these are?

    • I recon they are heavy duty. If I could get one from that guy in the video I think it would last my lifetime if I changed the acid once in a while: https://youtu.be/kNGg0P7B5fI

      • Is that guy cooking lead right next to him? He's probably died of cancer by now.

Nice video otherwise, good to see people out there recycling. No need to keep buying new ones except to make existing multinational companie rich

      • What an awesome video 👌

  • +2

I dropped off a battery at Supercheap during their $5 credit offer and never got the credit

  • Glad I read this thread as was about to buy a crappy century battery for my 4wd. Bought car 2nd hand over 8 years ago never changed battery but its starting not to crank if left for couple days with cold weather! The aux battery is an Optima which is also on its way out and will only power fridge for 2-3 days when car hadn't been started. Optima seem to be $$

    • What battery is in there now?

  • -1

May I suggest throwing your used batteries into the ocean for a safe and legal thrill?

It helps recharge the electric eels.

  • +1

A metal recycler will give you $10-20 for a dead battery. Sims in Alexandria, Sydney are quick and easy to do this.

    • I couldn't find anyone around Wollongong to give me cash for my 4 batteries. everyone will "recycle it for free!" 🙄

    • Anyone know where I can sell batteries for scrap for a decent price in Melbourne. I have about a dozen - too many cars in our driveway and discarded batteries just get added to the existing pile!

      • You can drop them at Supercheap Auto at no cost 👍 I would spread the drop offs though 😁

  • "FML, Just today I dropped off 4 batteries at the Battery World in Fairy Meadows that literally shares the parking lot with SCA!! And got nothing! 🤦‍♂️"

They were watching you and as soon as you drove off the deal came online 😂
