I've been doing the AFL Kayo promotion for the last few months, and I've been having nothing but problems with constant dropouts and errors.

They'd have to be 100% off for me to sign up again

I've been having nothing but problems with constant dropouts and errors.

      Mine's been working great.

      • +1

I've been told to use the live channels at the bottom of the home screen to fix the constant dropouts, but it doesn't help much.

I've spoken to Kayo about it, and they say Android TV's are renowned for it, and there is no fix in sight.

I'm running mine on a Nvidia Shield Pro, wired ethernet. Hardly ever have an issue.

Also, no issues running on a browser on a PC. or on iPhone/iPad.

Seems like the issue maybe your device and/or you internet connection.

            @jv: I've been considering a Nvidia.

Are they easy enough to navigate with a remote.

You know how some things like YouTube are a pain to type in, using a remote

Are they easy enough to navigate with a remote.

extremely easier and much more responsive than the apps on a Smart TV

              • @jv: I'm going to blame you for the Nvidia that I'll probably purchase in the next few days then.

I'm not sure about the standard one, but with the Pro, the remote has a built in microphone and you can just 'speak' in the search.

                  • @jv: I see they were $218 in March !

I see they were $218 in March !

                      I bought 2 for around $280 each a while back…

100x better than using the slow apps on a smart TV….

If you want a cheaper temporary solution, got for a Google TV of Firestick. (4K versions)

I'll probably purchase in the next few days then.

I'd wait for a sale, they have them often.

                  • @jv: Legend !

                    • @Shaquille Oatmeal: I also vouch for the Nvidia Shield Pro. Regarding typing/searching, if you don't want to use the voice function there is a Shield smartphone app that works great for that too, much easier than the remote.

                    • @Shaquille Oatmeal: @jv: Legend !

                      now that's a bold claim

                • @Shaquille Oatmeal: What are you using currently? NVIDIA Shield will probably see a massive hardware refresh within the next 12 months, coinciding with the next Nintendo Switch.

                  • @jasswolf: @jasswolf - I've been using the built-in software on my 2020 Sony Smart TV, but Kayo is shocking to use on it.

YouTube and Netflix are fine, but Kayo drives me crazy

                    • @Shaquille Oatmeal: Update the TV software if you have the option, or grab a Firestick 4K Max for $30-$40 and wait it out for a new Shield model.

Hardware update will be massive, including a big jump in video upscaling.

                      • @jasswolf: My TV is running the most up to date software, which is actually about two years old.

I'm really liking the sound of the Nvidia

                        • +1

@Shaquille Oatmeal: It's powerful by current standards, but current standards are largely shit. The premium smart box SoCs have caught up, and have better hardware features, just not as much polish.

Shield doesn't support HDR from YouTube, doesn't support hardware AV1 decode (or encode), nor VVC (or any other H.266-based codec). Then the bluetooth support is mediocre when we're in the age of 5.2/5.3 and LE Audio. Doesn't have ML acceleration to use detail reconstruction (especially important for 4K and 8K, or multiview) and upscaling features.

Waste of $200+ when you'll just wind up replacing it in less than 2 years. The Apple TV is technically better in terms of raw hardware performance, but its codec and standards support is the same or worse.

            • @Shaquille Oatmeal: I second the Nvidia Shield Pro. Great device especially with a custom launcher, I use flauncher.

              @Shaquille Oatmeal:

Are they easy enough to navigate with a remote.

Forgot to mention, you can also use the Nvidia app on your phone and it acts as a remote.

It allows you to type using your phone's keyboard.

            • +1

@Shaquille Oatmeal: It also has voice to text through the remote which works ok.

          • @jv: Have they fixed the black border issue on the Nvidia Shield Pro?

            • @sween64:

black border issue on the Nvidia Shield Pro?

              First I've heard about it…

              • @jv: Holy moly, probably first time ever in the history of Ozbargain we see a thread with 5 @jv replies with no text in bold (and 3 of them in a row, wow).
Someone must be hacked @jv account!

I'll only do Kayo on the rare and targeted $5/month offers now. Love my cricket and my league, with occasional AFL. There are too many easy ways to watch all of them for free without spending $400 a year.

    • What are these ways? Kayo is worth every dollar in my opinion.

      • Also curious. Been paying but thinking of giving it up after the league season is done. Seem to be keeping the sub active for the possibility I'll watch some NHL/NBA.

Short of sharing the sub, not sure how to get it much cheaper.

      • What are these ways?

        Illegal streaming.

      • +8

The fact Kayo isn't 4k in 2023 is kinda crazy.

        • Agree. This is one of Foxtel's final hold backs. It has to change eventually.

        • +1

Definitely wouldn’t be expecting it any time soon. In the last few months they’ve also dropped the bitrate from I believe ~8700kbps down to 6499kbps.

Don’t even get me started on them nerfing the frame rate to 25fps for replays…

          • @Nousernamehere: Ohh that's what it is? I've always wondered why the recent replays look like I'm watching a GIF.

            • +1

@pharcyde: Yeah, it’s usually 24-48 hours after the game airs that they downgrade it.

Although they do bump up the bitrate for them which helps, still looks like crap though 😂

        • english premier league on optus is 720p i think… with such shit competition, don't think kayo will be going 4k any time soon.

    • IMHO the kayo minis are worth the price of admission. Saying that I bought a new TV which gives me free basic for 12mths, which will start after the free Uber One promo ends, which was after the Telstra deal.

Not sure what I'll do in a year. Maybe I'll think about it when I'm using the student beans 20% off and the Costco 15% off kayo cards

Kayo plays lots of advertisements don’t they for subscribers

    • -2

      No

    • yeah i get alot of sportsbet and ladbroke ads every qtr/half time break. It's like they are just streaming what they showing on foxtel but with crappier resolution. For the price I'll just stream footy "illegally".

Like really I just watch footy friday/thursday night, nba and f1. Thursday night games have nded, nba is ended, f1 is just a red bull show every race, 0 value with kayo.

      • +4

Depends on the event and if they are using an international stream.. a few examples:

The Open (golf) - Zero ads
DP World Tour - Tons of ads
F1 - Zero ads during race
        NBA - Tons of ads
AFL - Zero ads during game

Requires new user to get discount, use a family member that has email id. Note NOT targetted, general availability for QFF members (and that's just about everyone)….😘 ..!

    • I believe you need a new mobile # too

      • That costs $2 (max)

  • Using kayo mainly for the cricket, but the ashes are on 9, India vs Windies free on YouTube and I'm sure the upcoming world cup will be on FTA for a majority of major matches, so not really sure if it's still worth it.

Also kayo have broken the Android app on my tablet, it is stuck on SD with no way to change it, have to use Chrome to watch in HD

  • I have been using Kayo through Telstra TV and sometimes the sound increases or get a interference squeak through broadcast. Anyone else using Telstra TV have this issue?

    • +1

I had this issue at my daughters place when I visited a her few weeks ago. Not only did the volume fluctuate but it randomly switched from the NRL stream to other sports a couple of times. I don’t own a Telstra TV myself but I have seen these issues reported on other forums.

  • +1

Sucks they dropped the beIN channels at the start of the month. Well, just for the 24hr Endurance racing and WTA anyway.

    • +1

      Agreed, sucks not having ATP/WTA

  • Anyone have a code they don’t want feel free to pm me please.

    • Yes same. If for whatever reason you aren't going to use a code I would love one as well. Cheers

  • +2

At these freakin' rates, its a bloody KO alright. lol

  • Nah going to cancel once the AFL season ends - honestly speaking Kayo doesnt have much these days to make it 'worth' the price to stay subscribed annually

I dont mind F1 but most of the races are simply too late

NBA isnt back but if you got a bet365 account you usally can watch it on there

    Golf/Cricket do not interest me

tennis is meh - Aus Open is on FTA and most other competitions are to late

i dont know where they get $35 a month from for premium - essentially they just accept people will share the account so the try make a few bucks? becuz if you're not sharing the cost $35 a month is a giant rip off….

  • Canceled last weekend as my old offer run out, was hoping I'd get an new offer by Sunday night;-)

    • Would up getting a new $15 /12 months account with the Qantas FF deal. Which is still running despite saying expired.

  • I got 2 free months as a Binge customer. no way I would pay $30 though like they charge now

  • +1

This is really frustrating, any idea how you qualify for this discount?

    • yeah , interested too,, I only see 14 day trial option

  • I've been using Kayo for years and now that they've lost all the Bein channels, the only thing I'm still actually watching on it is F1 (very rarely might watch NRL/AFL) and I don't think I can justify paying $460 a year just for that so I'm on the verge of cancelling it, but would consider staying on if i can get a decent discount.
Maybe I'd accept this offer, but I was not one of the "select" customers, so unless something pops up within the next month or so (I got next month free due to accepting the Uber One offer), I'll be cancelling my subscription.
Losing all the Bein channels and still expecting people to continue to pay the same amount of money is ridiculous.
