Ok can anyone actually compare this cooker to the cheap KMart/BigW cookers? What does it do differently for the practical task of cooking and reheating rice?

I understand that the $300-$600 rice cookers will bake you a cake, sing you happy birthday, automatically dial up the circus animals and dancing girls when your family goes out of town, and buy your wife an anniversary present while making you into a famous social media influencer. But what about these vs cheap?.

    • +1

I think it comes out fluffier in the fancy ones?

I don't mind how it comes out with the cheap kmart cooker and actually prefer it like that. I mix jamine 50/50 with basmati to get the perfect balance of fragrance/taste/not too fluffy ratio.

      • Anko? Each time I have touched that brand, it has ended in regrets. What is also funny with KMart, if you look at the reviews for all items, every thing is 5 stars with short comment. Even items at Bunnings or Myer, at times may have negative reviews and not many stars, but not with Kmart. Go figure.

        • I've tried both the kmart and bigw $15 rice cookers and both were fine.

    • +9

Had the cheap Kmart, burnt rice at the bottom and peeling off after use.

Got this one around 2 years ago, using it every 2 days and still looking strong, no burnt bottom, no peeling.
Cooking time is around 45 mins.

If mine broke after the warranty I would buy another one again.

Just beware of the size, takes a good space on the counter.

      • Thanks. Exactly the kind of info I was after.

    • I'm going to assume the LCD display is mostly a gimmick that in the end, still just turns the thing on and off.

With Aldi's flexible return and warranty policy, it seems like a safe gamble if all you are after is cooking rice.

      • +1

The LCD is just a timer, in rice program it will show how much time to finish but just at the last 10 min or so. And after finishing shows how long is been keeping the rice warm.

For other programs is to set how long you want it to cook.

And last is the delay start timer, in which you can put how long it will wait before start cooking.

    • I use the timer on my phone and then just switch my Kmart unit off. It's usually 15 mins I need.

    • Better warranty is why I went with this one over Big K Target

Do these sell out somewhat fast or something? The last time the rice cooker deal was on I couldn't find one in the 2 ALDIs near me on any day.

  • Keen on this when the last deal came up but no stock around me.

However if cooking for one or two this seems overkill. Anyone with experience just cooking small amounts like one or two cups rice? Did rice turn out well ?

    • For 2 ppl we routinely cook 2 cups for say dinner and lunch next day, no issues. Never used other functions just white rice, even though we often add a bit of brown rice. And never tried quick quick. Normal cook time for white rice takes about an hour

      • Thank you

  • Great cooker, use my all the time - just be forewarned and do not make the same mistake i did of putting the rice and water in without first confirming the bowl was in the unit.. water and rice all through the machines body and PCB board. Cleaned it out and works fine though.

Geez, if you can't cook a bowl of rice without a rice cooker……

    • +10
      • if you can't wash dishes without a dishwasher
      • if you can't do laundry without a washing machine
      • if you can't build a fire instead of use an AC

Humans invent things to make tasks easier and less time consuming. This does that.
      Nice troll attempt though.

We have this. Had it for about a year. Replaced our old (broken) Zojirushi.

Got it for about $35 half price from Aldi.

It's cooks rice well, no complaints at all. Does not have a water drain funnel thing for when the lid opens and condensation from the lid falls down, it just has a little indent, kinda sucked at first but now i'm glad that I don't have a little dirty funnel thing to wash. I'm sure it has timer function but we don't use it - just turn it on 'quick cook' when we want to eat, which cooks in about 30 mins. We cook white rice, but also brown, and also sprinkle in some random beans sometimes.

Absolute bargain, and as good as the old rice cooker. Really don't see the appeal of Zojirushi / Cuckoo / Tiger / Cuchen / Panasonic / expensive brands at all anymore.

    • Is the non stick bowl as good as Tiger’s?

      • Haven't tried Tiger, but from my experience, as long as you get the water / rice ratio right, any rice cooker can be 'non stick'.

Even the $30 Kmart one I found.

(I've no issues with this Aldi one)

        • +2

I've got an old cheap one, where the internal coating has peeled off 40% of the bottom of the bowl, which would like a word with you about there not being much difference about the bowls 😂

Ps yeah, I'm aware that can't be good for us, which is why I'm looking at this as a replacement.

          • +2

@nickj: Yeah. I realised the most important thing is the bowl being of good quality. Decades ago, even the tiger brand was badly peeling so weary about it. I had to buy a new unit just for the bowl.

      • A friend of mine has this one with a ceramic bowl.

        Seems pretty good.

    • How long does it take for you to cook brown rice please?

    • Thinking of getting as a spare.
My current Zojirushi of 10 years still works fine.
But the Non-stick inner pot shows scratching even with very careful use with non-metal utensils (since PTFE probably not safe).

Have you and a chance to use some of the other functions Bake, Congee, Crunchy Rice, Sushi as yet?

Do you find the "Fast/Quick cook" cooks faster the Zojirushi?

      • This is normal for an everyday rice cooker.

Better than a bad one, which burns the rice due to poor heat control of the element, and likely wrecks the non-stick coating in short order.

A better make/model might last longer, but we need people that have used it daily for 10 years to comment… (where are they all?)

The new induction ones are likely to be worth it because the technology is likely to result in more even temperatures during each cook, and nothing outside the non-stick coating's temperature limit.

So until you know better, if you want quality non-stick interior, it will be best to stick with an expensive model from a good brand, from a Japanese factory. But often this means spending $500. Our Panasonic 5 cup is not induction, and Chinese made. The non-stick coating is great but only a year old so far. But @$120 a 10 year life, this is acceptable. And no way to remove a single one of the 14 cooking annoying modes! Is this re-branded Aldi one better? I doubt it.

      • Rice is abrasive if you washing in the inner pot lol…

  • I got this at start year when Aldi had on sale. Does a really good job. but be aware. its BIG. about the size of an air fryer

  • look into a traditional donabe. I have one of these aldi rice cookers and they take a long time to cook rice from scratch, even on fast setting.

I bought a donabe and never looked back,

    • Thanks for the alternative suggestion.
I find that my Zojirushi takes a long time to cook as well. Plus would prefer inner pot without Tefal/PTFE Non-stick coating.

    • +1

Thank you for the tip, had never read about this method before, so just looked into it, the downside of the donabe method appears to be that it uses natural gas to cook ("Set the donabe on a gas stovetop"… and heat for 14 mins). There's increasing awareness of the indoors pollutants from natural gas cooking and the need for lots of ventilation when using natural gas (eg its contribution to asthma in kids, for which natural gas cooking has the same risk as living in a household with a smoker).

      • I haven’t been aware of natural gas cooking being similar to smoking. Another thing to worry about.

  • HWAT BRAND ?

Or you could just use this recipe and your existing saucepan for the exact same result. Saved you $60.

Does digital rice cookers turn rice into little 1s and 0s. asking behalf of a geek friend

  • -2

How many cups of rice can you cook in it?

    • Did you even bother to read the description?

    • +1

In store looking at it right now, and the manual says 2 to 10 cups capacity.

  • Looks like you can't use the dishwasher for the bowl - no mention of that in the manual (even objects to stuff brushes and harsh soaps).
There is a timer function, in increments of hours plus 5 or 10 minutes, depending on cooking mode.

    • I think the safest way to clean, if it has rice stuck to it, is soak it for a few hours (probably even less) and then just wipe clean with a normal sponge and a bit of dish washing soap.

      • +1

Yep this is what I do, works well

  • Got the E1 error right straight after first use. Google search suggests that there might be something wrong with the ribbon cable running behind the lid hinge which mean sooner or later you will eventually break it depends on how heavy you use it. This is my first time buying Aldi electrical stuffs and I realize that you get what you paid for.

    • Don't forget the Special Buys Satisfaction Guarantee as mentioned in the description.

      • Yeah it just wasted my time for this low quality product. I got this one as a replacement for my 7 years old $14 Big W rice cooker which is still going strong but lacks some fancy features here and there. Turned out do not replace it when it is not broken.

  • Thankyou OP!👍 I didn't think there would be any left but I managed to pick one up a couple of days ago!
