Just with any air purifier. Please account for the cost of the filter. As you would need a few over the lifespan of the device.

    • Thanks, I’ll add it to the post

  • RRP is $399 it seems, from the distributor with free shipping.

    • That’s right, RRP seems to have dropped over the years. I’ve bought two for about $500 each few years ago.

I bought one a few years ago. It has been a solid performer.

As the non-particulate filters get saturated quickly and (for carbon based ones) also release what they've captured after temperature changes, it's better to use a single stage HEPA filter in combination with a good bipolar ioniser. This way, VOCs are neutralised and the efficiency of the filter is also increased because particles smaller than what the filter can filter are agglomerated into larger ones which it can. Then, for ongoing costs, all you need to do is change a single, relatively cheap HEPA filter.

    • Can you recommend a product that does that?

    • -5

Agreed. Air purifiers are worthless energy consumers. Just open a window, and be happy that you’re in Australia. The gold standard for air purification is ventilation

    • Avoid ionisers, they result in harmful ozone

      • Not all do. The one I linked above generates none at all.

        • +2

          They all do.

That UL 2998 "ZERO Ozone Emissions" validation is for under 5 parts per billion. With the validation site itself suggesting safe levels to be below 10 parts per billion.

          • @TheContact: Yeah, so does the air you're breathing now. The point is they produce no significant amount of it. Also relevant as you seem to think that a very small amount of ozone is still harmful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slIylnAZsDY

            • @umexcuseme: You claimed it produced no ozone at all, I refuted that.

Okay, this is on me, I should have clarified. I'm not suggesting that 5ppb in and of itself is harmful. I'm suggesting that in a closed environment with an ozone generating device that level could build up to unsafe levels.

              • @TheContact:

                I refuted that.

No, you pointed out that the certification means it's below 5ppb, which is as low as the certification goes. It doesn't mean the device produces 5ppb or any at all. Those models in fact produce no ozone.

                • @umexcuseme: Okay, that's a fair point. Are there any papers to back that claim up? Otherwise it's a bit dubious for the makers to claim it produces no ozone yet only validate with UL2998 that "emissions during use phase does not exceed 0.005PPM", when we can get commercially available devices that can detect ozone down to at least 1PPB.

  • I owned one of these. Found it made absolutely no difference to my health, just to my energy bill.

    • +2

You are not really going to notice a difference to your health, unless you live in an area with high air pollution or you have allergies.

      They use virtual no power.
