Wait for prime days 11-12th probably cheaper then .

    • +8

This is the Prime Day deal.

      https://www.aboutamazon.com.au/best-early-amazon-prime-day-d…

You don’t have to wait until 11-12 July to start saving big during Amazon’s 2023 Prime Day event. Starting now, Prime members have early access to deals on.

Fire TV – 50% off RRP on both the Fire TV Stick Lite and Fire TV Cube, now featuring the world’s best shows and movies on BINGE, and the sports you love on Kayo Sports, live from 00.01AM AEST 03 July until 23.59 AEST 12 July

    • Yeah as mentioned by homealone, this is an early prime day sale, they tend to do this for certain Amazon products about a week before prime sale starts each year.

  • Is it better than the Google tv 4k? (Using it mainly for Netflix and 2 other apps on Android)

    • +4

Im fairly sure this fire stick doesnt do 4k (I could be wrong).

So just on price, the fire stick lite is better, but if 4k is a must have for you then probably go the Google tv 4k.

However if you just want the best of the best smart tv boxes, go the NVIDIA shield

    • Not all streaming services in Aus have apps for the fire stick, or at least that was the case last time I set one up.

      • +2

It's really easy to install an app not from the Amazon app store. So long as there is a Google/android tv version of the app, you should be able to get it working on this

      • +2

Download the APK and sideload it. It'd work as long as the app doesn't require Google Services.

      • +3

This is no longer the case, all the foxtel ones, so Kayo, Binge, and Flash are all available on the amazon app store now.

    • Nope. Fire tv 4K Max one is as good as if not better though.

  • +11

No volume on controller deal breaker

    • Thanks for pointing this out, almost jumped on this to buy for parents but that takes away some simplicity

    • +1

      No volume control??? That's ridiculous!

    • Also no power button, so I guess that implies no IR. Significantly reduces functionality, in my opinion. Wait for the HD or 4K to go on sale.

      • +1

The remote is Bluetooth and not IR
There is no power button, but rather it goes to a ‘Sleep’ mode by long pressing the ‘Home’ button.
Volume can be controlled by the switches on a Bluetooth speaker.
Deal Breaker - if you connect Bluetooth headset that doesn’t have volume buttons, like AirPods, then you can’t control volume.

        • +3

The HD and 4K remotes are both IR and Bluetooth to allow for TV Controls.

    • Agreed, I bought this one thought it was a less powerful version of the 4K. But no Volume, Power button is really frustrated. Not using anymore.

    • I bought it for my Mom last time for $29. The TV controller on her 4K Hisense controls the Fire TV, at least for some functions.

Anyway it works great, FHD only I believe though.

  • Any chance you can price match this with JB Hifi?

    • +2

Give them a call and try, but don't know why you would, it's free delivery with prime

      • lol - it would only cost me $16.15 if JB were to agree for Price match. Lemme give a try, my store is literally 5 mins walk from office so no fuss in doing C&C

      • +5

"unfortunately I am unable to price match this as this is a amazon exclusive pricing"

      • @nsingh21 JBHIFI has now updated the price on their website to match the Prime Day prices- https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/283497/104965/screensh…

I'm quietly hoping for this deal again…. (please please please)

  • If i don't want or need the 4k resolution, is there much of a difference between this and the 4k max? I have an original but I find the speed and lagginess in the original quite painful.

    • +4
      • No TV controls
      • Lite has WiFi 5 whereas 4k max has Wi-Fi 6, honestly never heard of these terms but something with connectivity.
      • 1GB vs 2GB of memory. You can buy the splitter cable and use a USB stick to expand it easily. Mostly important for games which are mostly medicore for the Fire TV.
      • 1.8GHz CPU vs 1.7GHz CPU
      • 750MHz vs 650MHz GPU
      • Doesn’t support Dolby Atmos, only passthrough of Dolby-encoded audio

Missing out on TV controls, less storage and performance I suppose?

      • +1

I recommend waiting for the 4k max to go on sale, I regret buying the lite as I eventually upgraded to the 4k max.

      • Hmm. Is there an point of the tv controls? On both tvs i just use the tv remote to control the firestick (the original and 4k). Lags a lot on the original though.

        • If I recall from my experience, TV controls meant that I could turn it on/off and change the volume without the TV’s default remote. So it may be very useful but the lag issue you described is strange, maybe defective unit. I am certain you can get a replacement from Amazon CS even if its past the return date.

Don't forget to side load SmartTubeNext for ad-free Youtube viewing.

    • Can you a share a link that has instructions on how to sideload SmartTubeNext please.

  • +1

The only thing I like about this is the ability to pair with older echo dot devices. I have lots of echo dot 3s and they won't pair with my 4k max. But the limited remote control is a deal breaker for me.

  • No sale on the old hockey puck echo dots? Seems a shame.

    • +1

Give it time, I got mine for ~$15 this time last year

  • Excellent option for "normal" use. I also have one for travelling.

Interesting that it now has Kayo support. I had to side-load mine.

    • @tonydav - can we sideload android apks onto a Fire stick? From your comments seems like we can - will look this up

      • You certainly can.

So long as the app works on Google/android tv, it should work fine on this.

There's tonnes of online resources that show how to do it

        • Can you a share a link that has instructions on how to sideload apps on a firestick please.

          • +1

@josem: honestly, just google it…any of the links on the first page will be able to help

  • Got it for 21 few months back, works great

  • Bought this and sold it for the 4k, the no volume was annoying but you can use the TV standard remote on this.

But what really annoys me about the whole Firestick group is that the Fire TV app doesn't let you control volume and doesn't seem to turn off my TV (just puts the stick to sleep). As someone with 2 kids I rarely use the physical remote so I've put this on the least used TV in the house. It is snappier in performance than my Google TV but just too inconvenient for us

  • hows cimpare to fire cube?

  • when are they bringing the dual Firetv 4k max bundle

  • got it for $14 bargain 👍

  • I bought the HD version and was hoping to sideload the adblocking via the Developer setting which no longer appears in the Settings.

    Any ideas?

  • developer options are gone. I think they disappeared after an update of the Firestick firmware

    • That changes my whole view of these fire sticks….if they don't allow you to sideload apps, and as i result i can't put on apps like emby/plex/kodi, then this turns from a good purchase to straight out e-waste (for my use, i know it may not be the case for everybody else)

      • I'm wondering if you wind back to the original firmware by doing a reset to factory settings, whether you can regain functionality.
Frustratingly, the Youtube adblock program has gone from free to subscription too.

    • This is troubling news for future ability to sideload apps. I really hope there is a way around this crippling update.

      • I have a fire stick that I purchased about 6 months ago. Is up to date and I just went through developer options to use downloaded and install an apk. Unsure if this is exactly side loading or not but was able to do this last week

  • just received the Fire Tv cube. it wont read my portable 5tb drive :'(

  • Can always buy this to have volume control on you lite
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005719498047.html?spm=a2…

  • I have a generic all in one remote and it worked with fire stick lite without any setup. All functions work except the home button - I cannot find a button on the all in remote which sends the fire stick lite to the home screen.
