Good discount, but tough call to blow $999 on these without having latest Wi-Fi 6E for future-proofing.

any recommendation on upgrading? currently is using rbr20 tri system, only wifi5, but I think it is still reliable. Not sure whether to update it. Rbr20 maybe too old to use in 2023.

I just installed the three pack at home and it works great - solved a lot of issues from having a bigger house with very thick walls

    • +1

same, I'm running an RBR20 with 3 satellites, have been with me for 5 years now i think and still works fine. Thing is I need another satellite but it is difficult to find one.

$1k for wifi that isn't even the latest tech seems a bit silly. Also wifi 7 just around the corner.

    • +1

Every bit of new tech is just around the corner. But it doesn't mean my $1 aliexpress usb wifi adapter suddenly stops working with some ancient wifi router. There are so many reviews of this too, quite a lot of people seem to think spending big $$$ is the only solution…

      • -1

My point is its already a generation behind as not 6E , soon to be two generations with Wifi 7 , $1K is too much for old tech.

    • +3

Silly as $2.7k for a iPhone.

      • Silly as you claim it to be, a phone is one of your most used daily possessions. If you're going to spend money, be it the things that you're touching everyday, your bed and your shoes.

    Lol lol lol lol.

I wanted a laugh and went to see what mind-bendingly-incredible technology has people spending 1.5 thousand dollars on WiFi access points and saw this in one review:

"Seems one of the latest software/app updates now no longer allows us to see all of the connected devices. It appears you need to subscribe to a parental control subscription if you want to see all of your connected devices. Total Scam"

Never imagined I'd laugh THAT hard. A fool and his money…..

    • Have something close to this, not being able to see devices didnt sound right, can confirm can see all connected devices. At the time moved up from an RBK53 (router with 2 satellites) setup because I had a perception that the RBK53 struggled with the many devices connected to it, Now running 850 router with 850 satellite and 750 satellite and no longer have the issues I used to have. Internet facing my 50Mbit link was (and is) more than enough, didnt buy the upgrade for higher internet speeds.

    • So what's the easy to set up, cheap option that can do everything the Orbi's can do?

      • No one seems to want to answer your question as I'm curious as well… FTTP being installed now… Once up & running I will setup my mesh system & see how that goes

Consider a Unifi Dream router and access points instead. Cheaper when on sale and you can buy wifi 6e APs later when they become affordable.

one of the best systems ever - granted its super expensive and now its not Wifi 6E

and if you have a fast enough internet and enough devices to justify it

  • Damn I paid 1200 for these last year. $999 is a pretty good deal.

It isn't 6E but if you cared enough about 6E you probably would have bought something that is 6E compatible already.

Have had this setup for close to 12 months and it has been a rock solid upgrade from the single wifi router (5 triband) that I had before. Night and day in terms of performance and it has NOT required a single reboot or tinkering with in that time period. I was lucky to get the 853 on ebay for just over $700 (used) and actually got another satellite (new) on ebat for $300. So I have a 854 setup. I am not sure you will miss much in regard to the lack of 6E functionality. Probably one of the best upgrades I have ever done.

Why not just spend a couple hundred $ getting a sparkie to wire the home** and then a smaller and cheaper Wi-Fi system to supplement for mobile devices?

I'm not sure 6E and/or 7 is justified for a little while yet (until you have enough devices that can access it). It seems like bit of a pi**ing contest of who has the fastest, but completely unutilised, WiFi.

**It's a rort to have to pay for a 'certified installer' to run some LAN cables (but that's for another time)

This unit came out in 2020… it's probably just about to be updated. A terrific bit of kit though.

Also, the parental controls (really useful for families with kids and their stacks of devices) is paid subscription only. Competitors offer it for free.
For the price you are paying upfront, this is just greedy.

If you aren't desperate to upgrade right now, my strong suggestion is to hold off a little longer.

I've been doing a little research recently, as I'm in the market to upgrade.

Here's a really good read on what's out there already: https://www.tomsguide.com/best-picks/best-wi-fi-6-routers

I'm holding out for just a bit.

Just get the 6 version for half the price. Most new devices still use 6 anyway. 6E can another couple of years..
