I'm learning Thai so I can go to Thailand for… a thing.

.. don't let friendly Russian expats spike your drink!

      • but they're friendly :P

      • Thanks for the tip. So far, I've been avoiding high rise buildings with windows.

  • I’ve always looked at the Thai alphabet and wondered, how is this even read?

If you're serious about learning Thai, it's very important you learn the different tones. I'd recommend you actually learn the alphabet and learn to read (it's not as hard as you may think)

    Example.

มา ม่า ม้า. Maa (flat) , màa (low) , máa (hi)

Come, dog, horse. Very easily confused if you don't understand the tones :)

    • Same in mandarin. With the Maa words as well.

      • Yes, 来 狗 马 the three famous ma words

      • Same in mandarin. With the Maa words as well.

not all words have tones man…

it's something that will only confuse beginners

      • Fascinating because as a Mandarin speaker, being at Phuket airport and listening to the Thai announcer speak Mandarin, that was the first time I've heard someone with a non-native accent speaking Mandarin perfectly, because they could do all the tonalities well I suppose.

Heck they spoke better than me cos I butcher it with an Aussie-Cantonese accent (about the ugliest combination possible) even if my tonalities are ok.

Yeah the Thais get onboard pretty quickly whenever there is money to be made. A good example is the whole weed setup there. Doesn't interest me but the amount of shops that pop up in no time is amazing.

I noticed menu's are also in chinese and russian in the touristy areas which I don't care for (admittedly their english isn't good nor do they try to learn).

          • @G-rig: unnecessarily racist undertones regarding the existence of cyrillic text but ok

@Papa Huggies: Of course I was expecting that - replied before I finished editing.

Was pointing out a simple observation - .. admittedly their english isn't good nor do they try to learn english or Thai. I should have just said they aren't good travelers. A lot of those tours are sold to the Chinese travellers before they even get in the country, bit greedy, so the Thais don't exactly make as much out of it, just painful if you've ever done any tours and stuff.

I like staying out out of super touristy areas mostly (which is why i like Bangkok, very good mix of everyday Thai's as well).

@G-rig: Why should travellers learn the local language when they travel? They are not migrating there permanently. Nor should anyone be expected to learn English

Was pointing out a simple observation - .

Then you should not be surprised when people call you out for being subtly racist when you are making this sort of assumption. Just because you speak English you think you're a good traveller when compared to other tourists and accusing others for "not even trying to learn English OR Thai"? How's your Thai literacy btw? You better walk the talk and read and write VERY fluent Thai man… FYI Bangkok is arguably THE most basic and touristy city in Thailand.

                • @dukeGR4: Who said learn it. Nothing wrong with a bit of effort and interest in the basics - hello, thanks. please, money, counting even, not hard.
Everyone is entitled to an opion so get over it, doesn't always have to be 100% PC these days.

Bangkok is a pretty big city, i've lived in all different areas and directions - who said it's touristy - it sounds like you just talking about the few blocks around Soi Sukhimvit near Soi Nana. Have been all over the country.. ubon, udon etc.

This thread is about learning it but kents on here like to argue about anything.

                • @dukeGR4: If I called someone a (profanity) or toss pot, that is not racist ^=^.
