      Electric shock from these is like flicking a rubber band against your skin.
      
      You'd need to touch both sides of mesh at once to feel the shock, and be holding the button down.

      No kids here, and with the dog I just avoid swinging it near him (although the zapping sound has started to scare him… or maybe it is my wild flailing when that one fly is so damn fast that I can't get it)

      Yeah if the slider is at least midway and the red button is held, then you know it's working because the yellow light turns on :)

  I use AA battery powered ones - they last a few years
  I got mine from fleabay - 2 for 14 or something.

      I can confirm that this model works great at killing mosquitoes. I've killed at least 40 of them now.
      
      I keep it with me outside when on the patio around dusk when they love to come out and you can get quite a few zaps and dead mozzies

Had a battery one that worked well. You could unscrew it and cut the earth wire to make it more powerful.
