Every year on the last Thursday of June, First Responders Day is celebrated to honour the bravery, dedication, and contribution of first responders in protecting the Australian community during times of crisis. This year, it falls on 29 June 2023.

The event aims to bring together retailers, big and small, to show their appreciation to first responders by providing special offers to these workers at all participating Australian retail stores.

First responders are ordinary people who display extraordinary courage in the face of danger to protect and save others. Whether they work in the field daily or respond to emergency situations as needed, they all share a selfless commitment to serving the community.

First Responders Day is an online and in-store event that fosters closer connections between first responders and the retail industry. By extending a heartfelt “thank you” to these heroes, we acknowledge their essential role in safeguarding our society.

Would have been great to have something at ebay and/or amazon as well.

  • Does this include disability support workers and Aged Care?

    • No it does not

    • +19

Aged care is fair enough but disability support is an absolute fraud of an industry.

      • +1

Genuine question. But why is this?

        • I am on the NDIS. They have a maximum price list that people can charge for their respective service - cleaner, gardener, carer, physio, etc. A prime example of rorting the system was when I saw a physio about 6 months ago, they charged $75 for an hour. When I mentioned that I have NDIS funding, they gave me a printed price list of what they charge through the NDIS. It was over $22 an hour! I never went back.

      • +6

The industry is inherently flawed, yes. There are too many shonky con-artists who can call themselves "NDIS Providers" and then hire unskilled Uber drivers as support workers. Gives the industry a bad name.

        • +7

I met a lady who said the government pays up to $90/hr for NDIS services so all the providers charge $90/hr for everything (cleaning, gardening, support workers, etc). Basically the providers pay these people peanuts and pocket ~$60/hr for each service. It's such a rort.

          • +1

@jm7: $90 on weekdays. Lot more on the weekends.

    • Are disability and aged care workers first responders?

      • They've been included in previous offers. So was curious.

  • Do they give coupons?

    • I think you waive your ID

      • What if buying it online?

        • Unfortunately, there are no means to check First Responder identity online so the retailer can decide to make this an in-store event only.

          • @Royale with cheese: Is it just for one day?

            • @Yaren24: Promotions are at the discretion of the individual retailer, however we have selected Thursday as timing given the late night shopping provisions in most areas. Some participants may wish to extend their offering over the weekend. Please contact the participating store to enquire.

              Just copying from FAQ 😅

    • +1

You can always ask and see what the retailer says

    • +4

Are you serious? It’s first responders day not crossing helpers day

    • +2

      Also what about dog walkers?

      /s

  • +7

I'm always the first to respond when the Protoss attack my starports, why am I excluded?

  • -5

how do they verify if you are actually a 1st responder? can i just say i am a first responder and get the discount?

    • +5

      ID badge seems obvious?

    • There is an FAQ.

How will store staff vet identities?

We are asking First Responders to bring a Photo ID that shows their work identity. Alternatively, they can shop in their work uniform (including cap or top), or provide proof of identity through online platforms like email or member portal. This will ensure your staff can adequately identify the customer’s eligibility.

      • -6

So would a standard GOV ID work if I say I work in a hospital?

        • +2

Not sure if youre actually a first responder, but all the public hospitals that I have been to (many) for work have specific LHD IDs, not a generic government ID

      • +2

Alternatively, they can shop in their work uniform (including cap or top)

        Like this ?

        • Well that was fun to click at work.

  • It says AMEX accepted under Costco logo, when they do not. Or only for first responders?

  • -2

    Also 🤡, you know.

  • -4

    Medical receptionist counts ?

    • +4

Lots of us were forced to work face to face with the public when COVID was really scary and politicians were hiding in their castles. We also miss out but that's life. Nothing but respect for those in the medical field, especially those who worked in covid wards

      • +1

You are aware aged care and disability support workers do deliver direct care to Covid positive patients? The most horrific scenes during covid were from nursing homes. Most Covid positive residents are treated within the nursing home and not in hospital

        • +3

Yes of course. Also well aware of the stories of nurses and doctors desperately trying to save people and helplessly watching them die of something mostly preventable. Same reason paramedics and cops are heroes. Cant imagine picking up body parts off the road, or even seeing them. That's gotta do numbers on your brain.

          • @belongsinforums: Which is why support workers should be included.Thats why i said it’s contentious especially when this came to be because of Covid

            • @Jp1992: My family member works in aged care. They definitely don't get enough pay.

    • +6

      frontline =/= first responder

  • No Supercheap Auto makes King Steuart a saaaaaaad panda

  • +8

No love for investment bankers again :(

    • Them poor things 🫠

    • +7

Pretty sure they're not excluded. If they are First Responders they can claim the offer.

    • get off your bums and stop expecting handouts!
