It was around $40 for many days around late May when many of us bought numerous Hario products. https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B01HYUE8VU?utm_campai…

    • +2

Yea got this at $40, since that day all Hario prices have gone up. Haven't even opened it yet

  • +10

Does this work well with Nescafe blend 43?

    • +4

I'd recommend International Roast personally. It extracts and enhances the exotic flavour better.

      • +1

Nah the best would be Woolworths instant, the price is a bit high though

        • +1

Is that better than Aldi's? You gotta dilute that with acorns.

        • +1

To be serious for a brief moment, Coles Fairtrade Organic Freeze Dried Coffee, according to Choice, is the best instant coffee.

Have to admit I suspect having a small suspicion having “ Fairtrade” and “Organic” on the label may have had an influence on the taste. I would have to say though that freeze dried does tend to work a little better than spray dried.

          • @entropysbane: Can confirm coles freeze dried coffee is a good pour. I keep a jar in the pantry in case I run out of beans or otherwise can’t have an espresso based coffee.

          • @entropysbane: They used to have the non-organic, freeze dried, made in Germany for cheaper. Taste was also somewhat similar. Seems it's been discontinued.

    • No, but it works well with Nescafe Single Origin 42

  • I gotta admit. I pooh-pooh'd this as a silly coffee innovation till i tried one. Smooooooth.

    • +8

Most people reserve the pooh-pooh for after they try the coffee.

  • Are these meant to drip in the fridge or do you leave it on the bench?

    • Bench, you can add ice to the water

  • what grind works best for these - plunger?

    • You have to play around with it, generally filter grind but you might find it goes through too quickly (it should take around 2 hrs) , so may go a little finer etc . You would get a light to medium roast that is good for filter (dark roast also ok but all personal taste)

      • +2

I feel like cold drip all tastes almost the same regardless of the beans used? Maybe I'm just an uncultured swine, but to me it always ends up tasting predominantly cocoa-ey with little to no acidity.

        • Maybe uncultured swine.

I can definitely taste difference when I get beans that are roasted and meant for warm coffee as opposed to the fruity spectrum of the South American beans.

Might be time to experiment with a new roaster?

        • +1

No. You are right - a lot of filter coffee enthusiasts dislike cold-drips for this reason because it's bad at extracting interesting flavour profiles, most famously James Hoffmann. It consistently gives it a very typical coco flavour to coffee which some people really love/hate.

In saying that, beans will always make a difference - but just to a lesser degree. In my experience, V60, Aeropress, Clever dripper all brew a massive variety of filter coffees but cold brew simply does not. For this brewer, I would imagine any roast that is not burnt to a crisp will be more than good enough for it (eg. Aldi medium light or other filter roast blends)

If you want a good cold filter coffee experience with more interesting flavours, I'd recommend an iced filter cofffee with a recipe like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PApBycDrPo0

        • I’m with you man, only detect differences with cold drip.

  • any recommendations on where to buy inexpensive paper filters?

    • For this one or a v60 setup? I'd just get the hario ones they are already fairly cheap

    • +3

I just buy normal coffee machine filters and cut them to size, works exactly the same

    • I wonder if something like the reusable metal mesh filters used for the Aeropress would work as well - may be more cost effective in the long run

      • +1

I doubt they would disperse the water as evenly - I think the metal filter might end up letting the water run off to the edges seeing as it's not under pressure.

  • +3

    didn't need one, got one.

savings are too good to miss

    • -1

it was around $40 before so I wouldn't say it's "an absolute steal" exaggeration

  • Which country is this made in? Japan or China? Doesnt clearly state anywhere

    • +5

      Japan , premium glass

    • From https://global.hario.com/product/coffee/coldbrew/SBS.html

Upper bowl, Pot, Inner holder, Drip part, Paper filter / JAPAN
      Strainer, Lid, Outer holder/CHINA

HARIO is ostensibly a glassware company, so all their glass (and some of their plastics, filters, porcelain) is made in Japan, while most of the other components are imported

  • Makes a really nice smooth coffee, and not too strong and it's drips all the way through within 30-40 minutes…doesn't soak like others which makes the coldbrew bitter. You could drink this undiluted. Recommended using any espresso blend coffee .

    • bitter coffee is what we want, super strong

  • +1

    price back to $75

    • still available through Amazon Japan

      • +1

        now $105 and climbing

        • +3

That's Amazon AU mate, still same price on Amazon Japan, just select from list.

  • how come amazon jp have all the coffee gadgets? why?

    • Because hario is from japan

    • +1

There are lots of coffee places in Japan, as or more crazy about coffee then Melbourne.

  • Says unavailable on Amazon JP?

  • Not sure if I'd exactly like cold brew coffee….

    ….might get this anyway.

Who's got one and it just sits in the cupboard? Is it gimmicky?

    • My missus who hates black coffee likes cold brew. It much smoother and less bitter

If you want to try it for cheap before buying something like this I just use those empty paper tea bags and leave them in the fridge in water for 12-24 hours.

    • Another positive for the cold brew is that it is more forgiving with beans.
You can use older beans on cold brew coffee without noticing too much differences.

  • +2

Sheesh, all you need to make cold brew is a jar and a fridge. Not a $130 piece of elaborate blown glass.

    • +4

      But it's $48.96…..

      • -2

Sheesh, all you need to make cold brew is a jar and a fridge. Not a $49 piece of elaborate blown glass.

        • +8

          But it's only $48.96….

        • +1

This makes cold drip, not cold brew though.

  • +1

In japan it’s like 35 bucks yea

  • +1

Love my Toddy. Couldn't replace it for this fancy looking device.

    • +1

Much more functional for a larger amount. Theoretically, it should work better for extraction as well since I'm not fully convinced that 2 hours extraction time for cold drip is enough.

Doesn't look nice on a display cabinet I guess hahaha

  • +2

I will mention that these are really finnicky when it comes to how fast the water drips.

Because it has a set speed for the speed of the drip, you have to adjust your grind.
I had few times when I came back to a mess because it overspilled.

  • +2

If you're having issues with these, according to one of the translated reviews you may need to "upgrade to a water dripper with a glass cock"

  • -7

What a bad deal and mark up. Considering it is 3364 yen in Japan, even $40 is too expensive

    • +2

So do you expect them to ship it from Japan for $5?

  • Is this actually a good model/way to make cold drip at home or are their other better products to buy?

    • +1

I personally prefer Dripster Cold Brew Coffee Maker over this one (I have both).

The only reason being, it's almost impossible to change the flow speed on this one, and that will cause issues (I like mine stronger so I prefer having finer ground + slower drip speed to compensate for that, which you can't do with this one).

    • Yeah, would prefer one that lets you control at least some of the variables: i.e. cold drip setup that lets you adjust the flow rate (like the Toddy), or just a bag of coffee in a pot (you control the immersion time, plus you can choose to make 'concentrate')

  • I received a notification of a parcel coming from a residential area in Nagoya, Japan, with DHL. Could this possibly be it? Did anybody else get a weird SMS from DHL lately?

  • Item is back in stock

  • Updated delivery date
    15 Aug…

  • Can anyone share a specific grind number on the Smart Grinder Pro that would help slow down the drip? Mines going through in about 40 mins at grind size 30.
I can try finer settings but just trying to avoid wasting more beans if I can jump straight to a proper setting.
