I thought it was a fruit juice ?

    • +3

Just mix it in glass of water. What could go wrong?

      • I think in the US instead of Cottees they buy the equivalent product in powder form. Interesting.

      It's bin juice flavouring.

      • I'm in to bin juice I'll buy now :)

My neighbour is my bin buddy. If I go out first after bin day I bring his in, if he goes first he gets mine.

    • +6

Well if only neighbours were like the both of you. Some can't even take their own bins out. Let alone take someone elses bin back in.

Has anyone used this? Does it actually work and once you put some into the bin, how long does the nice smell last for in your own experience?

    • it does work to some degree but if the bin smells really bad it's always the best to get it washed.

Also a box can last for quite some time if you're not overly spraying them.

Here has some additional tips for you.

    • Highly recommended. I have the citrus one and it works really well to remove bad stenches and kill any insects and maggots that got into the bin before using the powder. Once used it keeps flies away.

We bag bio waste that are not composted (meat fat/skin, chicken/fish bones, prawn shells, dog poop etc ) but even after several days the smell seeps out through the plastic bags that are double-bagged. It’s especially horrid during hot Qld summers.

A quick sprinkle of this powder over the bagged rubbish before it putrefies helps prevent the gases formed from stinking up the garbage bin. A tiny bit goes a long way and lasts the whole week. Just top up with another sprinkle if needed.

  • Or sprinkle some bicarb and you're done for a fraction of the price.

    • Yeah nah not the same though.

The bun buddy is an insecticide - has permethrin and piperonyl butoxide.

Tried bicarb but it wasn’t enough to get rid of rotting shellfish smell and I used a lot! This product is powerful, smells pleasant and kills insects. Only need a tiny amount. Well worth $5 and lasts many months. No flies around bins in summer is a win for me, and my neighbours :-)

It is an insecticide too though so be careful not to leave it where pets or kids can get to it.

  • Never had a smelly bin in years of use🌼
Washed bin once in last 5 years.

    • By using this product?

      • Not using anything. Basic bin hygiene.

Bag up rubbish (in bags that had contained food I bought). No bags to buy. Importantly - no putrid bin juice!

Anything likely to putrefy goes in sealed bag in freezer until bin morning. Staying frozen until collection - controls odours.

Have very little rubbish. Put out bin every 2 or 3 weeks. Mainly to throw out small amount of rubbish from freezer.

So no smells, no need for chemicals or even need to wash bin.

Long ago, established a community food recovery & composting scheme. Dealing with a lot of potentially smelly waste from supermarkets & houses. To stay in good with the community I lived in, smells were a priority to control!
